Random Question re: Minor Leagues and Trades
Maybe not worthy of an entire Fan Post, but it didn't really fit anywhere else. I have a random question for those of you out there who know more about the way the system works regarding minor leaguers and when they have to be protected by being added to the 40-man etc.
At what point does it become somewhat counter productive to keep trading veterans for prospects? Right now our system is presumed to be loaded with talent, and we already have a 40-man crunch (somewhat). I know these players will have to be added to the 40 at different times, but is it possible to have too much talent at the minor league level that you simply cannot protect them all? I guess what I'm getting at is when does trading someone like Bradley for prospects begin to have diminishing returns due to the number crunch and it becomes time to trade 2 or 3 highly regarded prospects for 1 core type ML player who the team can control for a few years (ie Hamilton)?

I cannot answer that
but i will agree with you in that a team must be aware of it. That is why I think this team should be exploring ML player for ML player type trades along with ML player for prospect trades. Still, I think the team is trying to set itself up for some more acquisitional trades either this offseason or next deadline, when the 40 will start to get tighter.

one small trade
I might look into is to see what the Angels would ask for Juan Rivera. He is back from his broken leg, but stuck behind Hunter, GMJ, Anderson, Vlad, and Willits in the Angels OF. He has historically had solid splits but really clobbered LHP. I know we have a “glut” of OFs, but at this point Boggs should be in AAA, Byrd should be a 4th OF, and Bradley should DH as much as possible.

Rockies
I think I read that they are running into this problem. Because of it they are only asking for A or Low-A prospects in trade. Doesn’t seem like it would be that bad of a problem to have though.

with the extra year in the new CBA it makes it easier to protect the hs kids and latin american kids
so you get one extra season of dev in which you dont have those kinda dudes on your 40.

I don't think it's too big a worry
you’ll have attrition, trades, injuries, etc. to thin out the ranks before most of these guys need to be protected.
