Poor Randy
Remember this, from Randy Galloway during spring training?
The Rangers, under Washington, have become The Team that Hates Home Runs.
Anyone want to guess what team is leading the A.L. in home runs right now?
(I'll give you a hint...they have a beasticon playing center field for them...)

this probably means
we should brace for the columns about “The only way the Rangers can score runs is to hit Home Runs”, like we saw in previous years.

Damn
I knew that the pitchers weren’t getting many strike outs. I did not realize that it was that low of a number.
Danks, Volquez, Galarraga and Young are GONE! GET OVER IT! Endless whining will not bring them back!

do you think
nolan ryan may impart someone of his personal philosophy on the org. like Adam touched on yesterday? I mean it is one thing to pitch to contact but sometimes missing bats is necessary. When is the last time we really had a strikeout pitcher? Kevin Brown? Nolan Ryan?

thanks
that is actually very educational. I was too lazy to look it up myself. I am just under the impression that every staff needs that one guy that can strike people out when need be. I guess the closest we have is Padilla who is 20th in the AL in K’s.

Three true outcomes
Near the top in both walks and strikeouts and leading in HRs.
At least the pitching staff is keeping the ball in the park.

Hardball Times
The latest graphs are up at Hardball Times. Normally I would post the graphs themselves, but this is a crappy version of Internet Explorer. Anyways, the Rangers have the highest SLG in the AL, and their pitching is no loner the worst in the AL (at least according to the criteria of the graph).

funny how no one cares
Watching sportscenter this morning, I found it funny that Ponson lasting 9 innings wasn’t even mentioned…even funnier how there is rarely news of the Rangers, unless its the New York Rangers (hockey). If Jeter or A-Rod or the Yankees were leading in HRs, we would have to hear about it over and over again. So when’s our turn in the spotlight?

My guess
The Rangers will get the kind of attention the Yankees get when they are as successful over a period of time as the Yankees.
The Yankees have been a perennial playoff team for over a decade. The Rangers have been over .500 once in the 21st century.

If that's true...
then why don’t the Spurs get more attention? They are one of the most successful sports franchises ever, but you still hear a lot more about Jordan’s Bulls. ESPN and media in general feel they have to distill (dumb) things down to get ratings. I guess they know what they’re doing but it makes me not want to watch them or read them.

by jcAustin on May 22, 2008 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why not the Spurs?
Because they’re booooring (at least according to TV ratings). Even though they play the game the right way. People get bored watching them. Nobody wants to see Bruce Bowen make a steal, or Tim Duncan getting a block on the highlights. They’d rather see Lebron James dunking the ball and hear about how he scored 35 points in one game, even though his team lost it by 15.

Collin Cowherd had
a good comment on the Spurs on Tuesday morning.
He said they’re the mashed potatoes of the NBA. By themselves there’s not much to them but put them with a good entree like the Lakers and you have a chance to have a great meal.

Absolutely
Ranger fans can not expect a team 2 games under .500 with absolutely no history of winning to get much publicity. Watch a DFW sports television program if that is what you are looking for.
I did overhear a conversation last night though between two guys (not Ranger fans) raving about Hamilton and how it was sad that he would not be voted in as an all-star this year because nobody knows him. So there are definitely people taking notice that there is a guy in Arlington that may have a shot this year at the triple crown.
That guy alone will bring a little pub to the team.

Ha, +1
We do seem to be about as much of a perennial threat as those teams. Like I said before…. some teams just won’t ever be able to put it together. Ever. 4 teams from each league in the playoffs with no salary cap = same teams making playoffs. I hope we can turn the tides with young talent and key free agents like the Rays have done.

I wish it weren't this way.
I remember the days when SportsCenter focused more on the interesting games, instead of the popular teams. I really, really hate what ESPN has become.
To me, this re-emphasizes the need for an all-MLB PPV channel.

ESPN="Eastern SPorts Network"
ESPN has an overblown amount of love for the Sox and Yankees. I remember reading somewhere that they’re trying to change their programming since they’ve apparently figured out that the other 97% of us who don’t live in their region like other teams and other sports (college football…not just Notre Dame, either).
I’d never expect to see anything about the Stars, Rangers or Mavs on ESPN.

and missed on this call (it happens) but it’s not like he’s dumb enough to say that Sammy Sosa was the MVP of last year’s Ranger team like TR Sullivan.
Write that comment and you can have job with the Rangers forever.

eh
Going into this year, no one would have thought we’d be leading the league in home runs. These guys are all hitting home runs at rates higher than expected, with the sole exception of Kinsler.
Young? 5 home runs on the year was more likely than 5 home runs in the first 50 games
Murphy 6? Laird 4? He would have been laughed at if he said those guys would have 15-20 home runs on the season.
Hamilton 11? Bradley 8? Those are probably both on the highest end of expectations
Only two Rangers don’t have any homers on the year: Melhuse (20 ABs) and Metcalf (1 AB).
Galloway says a lot of dumb things, but this wasn’t a crazy prediction…

Not sure
that anybody saw the dramatic decline in HR’s this year in MLB.
Steve Phillips said the other day that MLB teams are on pace for 1000 less HR’s than were hit last year.
The fact that the Rangers are hitting so many HR’s this year means we should either commend them for their “natural power” or give a knowing nod to their team pharmacist.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

good point about the league decline
while the Rangers have been overperforming offensively, the whole league is way down.
I am skeptical that this drop league wide has anthing to do with steroids or other PEDs. I think there has been a natural ebb and flow of pitching talent, and the unlike the past ten years or so, I think that pitching quality is beginning to pass up hitting quality.
Completely qualitatively, I see a trend where there are more young pitchers who are doing really well than young hitters. Many of the truly dominant hitters this year (Berkman, Chipper) are old guys doing what they always do; whereas the young upcoming pitchers are dominating everyone else.
I think we may be entering a pitching era as it seems the young pitchers are more talented than the young hitters. Its like entering an ice age – you don’t know how long it will last or its extent, but I think that it will be significant for a while.
by JBImaknee on May 22, 2008 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who really knows
with any degree of accuracy as to why the league is going thru a power decline?
However, I also don’t believe in too many coincidences.
