Thursday a.m. stuff
Yay, a win! It broke the 3 game losing streak, and ensures the Rangers won't get swept in Minnesota. A win today would mean a split of the series, keeping the Rangers' streak of not losing series intact.
Sidney Ponson gets some love for working quickly and keeping the game moving. Ponson also apparently worked with Mark Connor after his bad start against Houston, when his movement was less downward and more side to side, to make the adjustments necessary to get back on track. It seemed to work.
Doug Mathis is going to get the start on Sunday, and Ron Washington says he hopes Kevin Millwood will be ready to take the ball the next time that spot comes up, on May 30.

Is Blalock back
this weekend? I’m interested in seeing the “new look” Rangers with Blalock at 1B. More curiosity than anything.

Who are you
and what have you done with Sidney Ponson? Driving home from work during the 7th inning I could hardly believe my ears. I have to start idly wondering if he’ll have some trade value if he keeps going pretty well. Then again, maybe they shouldn’t trade him if he can keep producing ground outs like that. Actually, looking at his numbers, the ground ball rate is similar to past seasons, but fewer of the fly balls are leaving the park and hitters seem to be making less solid contact.
He deserves to be called Sir this year.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Ponson
i’ve been wondering this myself, trade him or keep him. And i’ve been leaning towards bringing him back next year, if he can eat innings and induce groundball outs like he has in the past then he can be a solid part of the rotation

His greatest value should...
... be in a trade this year.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

trade
Oh yeah, if someones going to come in and offer a great deal then by all means trade him (right now thats my stance on all of the starting pitchers ) but if it’s nothing more than some low prospects, i say try to bring him back on a 1yr deal.

Ponson
has flashed greatness before. Witness his contract year of 2003.
Their never was much question about his arm during his career, the question was always about his desire, and what was between his ears.
Personally, I wouldn’t ever sign Ponson to a long term contract, because he will celebrate with cases of booze and Ho-Hos. I’d try to get value back in trade.

I am not suggesting
signing him to a long term contract, he’s not part of the future. But he might be part of the present, and I wouldn’t just trade him for anyone.

here we go again
Why is it that when the rangers have an inkling of success, we consider keeping valuable trade chips. Trade ‘em all. The future is brighter. Keep your eye one the prize rangers. Legitimate winning the following couple of years. Not lightning in a bottle. Plus, as stated above, if we were to sign him long term, he’s only going to decline with the realization that he’s secure, and relax for a couple of years, so trade trade trade. Let fools have the fool’s gold.

for a fanbase accustomed to losing
it is hard to differentiate between lightning in a bottle and real sustainable success.
