8 in a row
This is the 8th straight series where the Rangers have at least split the series.
Yay!
Although I have to say, I hate games like this.

well the team is certainly entertaining to follow, that's for sure
Even though it’s excruciatingly entertaining at times.
They showed quite a bit of resiliency in coming back to win the last 2 games of a series on the road too… so that’s encouraging to me.

Wishful thinking
If Josh Hamilton & the Rangers win every 3 game series and split the July series with the Angels, they will have a 54-41 record at the ASB.

Do you make a trade? I’m sure it would obviously be for a starting pitcher… who might be available? Or do you stand pat?

If the Angels keep up their winning %
The Rangers would be dead even with them (although I think
thinkthe Rangers record would be 54 and 42).

My comment was sort of meant to be wishful thinking, generic, etc....
but who is his competition right now? Longoria, Ellsbury? Seems like he’s proving to be move valuable than those guys. Murph now leads the AL and is tied for the MLB lead in doubles. How many great defensive plays has he made out in CF, LF, RF that don’t get any attention by national media.
My wife and I were freakin’ pissed the other night that Pence made that jumping grab out in RF. The play was all over SportsCenter and every where else. What they all neglected to mention was that the very next play in the bottom of that inning, Murphy made what could have been deemed an even more spectacular catch at the warning track in the corner. He gets my vote…even though I don’t get a vote.

thats not really fair though
thats counting leads blown in the 8th or 7th… those are just going to happen. Despite all of CJs problems hes still 9 for 11.
11/11 may not be among the leagues best but i would imagine most teams dont have a particularly great ratio when you include blown saves from guys pitching 7th/8th innings.

uh, 2, I believe
losing leads in the 8th is the suck….. what are you talking about? You’re supposed to have a guy who can get you successfully to the closer without giving up a lead…. it’s called a setup guy. Blown in the 8th, 9th, who cares?

outside of CJ? 2?
when? The only 9th inning save outside of CJ i remember was Eddie, who knocked it down. Maybe my memory fails me though.
and seriously, i dont see how what im saying is that complicated.
Look, a relievers in the 7th or 8th inning can blow a save when he never really had a chance to get a save since another pitcher would come in. Its misleading given the common perception of saves is just looking at what the team does in the 9th inning with a 1-3 run lead.
Of course its freaking important not to blow games in the 7th/8th, im arguing perception of the stat not that I want the rangers to suck in the 8th inning.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
by DSheppard on May 22, 2008 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was referring to 2 blown saves in the 9th inning...
9 blown saves total other than CJ. A pitcher actually can get a save if he comes in the game in a save situation, gets a hold, and finishes out the remainder of the game. It doesn’t happen that often, unless his team blows the doors off the opponent in the next inning.
I understand what you are saying about getting saves in the 9th vs. blowing them in other innings. My point is… a blown save is a blown save is a blown save. 7th… a little tougher to criticize, but 8th and 9th inning saves are disappointing. You should have a solid setup guy like the Yankees (even though they suck), Red Sox, Rays (never thought I’d say that), Cubs, Angels (not as good as most years, but still good on average), and D-backs. Jumpin Jack Flash has certainly not had as good of a year as last year, but it’s early, so I hope he can get it together as the season goes on.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
by SarasotaRanger on May 22, 2008 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but ok
the rangers ratio is worse relative to the league than i expected, obviously their 8th/9th havnt been particularly good. I just thought saves/blown saves has a certain ratio attached for a closer so when you are looking at it for a team you have to take that into consideration.
34:8 or so may be what most people would guess for an average or worse closer, but 40:20, a significantly worse ratio, is an average year for a mlb team.
thats really im all im trying to point out.
11:11 is definitely bad though, and worse than I initially thought.

Since quality versus cost of living is way up on my scale (and I can live anywhere I choose), I’d point out that I am “from” neither TX nor OK, have lived in both for at least ten years plus, and they are 1 and 2 on my US preferred places. Disclaimer, I can’t tolerate either coast, hate cold weather, would rather be in equal depth of sanitary sewage than snow (at least it starts out warm).
Top preference? St. Lucia, but for a variety of reasons I can’t really do that.

A big win
I thought coming into the road trip that the Rangers needed to split this series at worst. That way, if they go 2-4 at TB and Cleveland then they will finish the trip 4-6 and that is not a disaster. Going 1-3 or 0-4 would have made for a potentially season altering road trip.

I think we match up fairly well with him. The Rangers have been pretty patient this season and Carmona’s WHIP is 1.50 largely because he has issued 35 walks to 22 strikeouts. I’m not saying they’ll score 10 runs, but they have a chance.

That's a Bad Stat....
Some of those runners are counted twice because they are left on by more than one hitter. (ie 2 on 0 out and the next two hitters K, it counts as 4 LOB even though its only 2 runners). We only had 24 baserunners today and 8 of them scored (16 hits, 7 BBs, 1 HBP)
by Topgun22 on May 22, 2008 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

by red shoe ranger on May 22, 2008 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd bet
that its right at Average. Looking at runner stranded totals for good pitchers they are usually in the 75% range. So I’d bet the average pitcher is more in the 60-70% range. So 1/3rd of runners scoring looks like a reasonable number.
by JayK on May 22, 2008 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a bad stat
Team LOB tells you how many guys walked from the bases back to the dugout at the end of your team’s half of the inning when you bat. We had 13 guys make that walk today. That’s a lot. The 26 LOB is an indication that we had lots of guys on base with less than two outs and still couldn’t get them in. 26 is a lot too. That number is directly proportional to the number of swear words I say when we load the bases with 0 or 1 outs and get no runs (see game 1 and game 3).

HR: J Hamilton (12, 10th inning off B Bass 0 on, 2 Out)
RBI: J Hamilton 2 (53), M Bradley (27), G Laird (18), M Byrd (4), C Shelton 2 (5)

.......thats implying AA success doesnt mean much
AAA is full of AAAA players and veterans trying to latch back on.
AA success is not to be looked down upon… A to AA the biggest jump in the minors

I'm not
saying it isn’t impressive, I think Max is our best prospect.
But to say it is stupid that he isn’t in the majors right now doesn’t make sense.

i dont think he was saying that as it was stupid
not to have him up.
just that his streak was stupid as in ridiculous or something… who knows. Longhorn?

although
That doesnt mean i think maxram needs to be up. Not yet. Hes getting there though. He is another reason I dont like moving blalock. We could have given him some mlb at bats at 1b in the latter part of the season.
Although i suspect we will move him back before the end of the year.

No plagues
it is the California League, it’s a law that every player gets at least one homer a year.

Just about everything
I won’t spoil it….
but I can take some ridculousness…it’s what makes Indiana Jones so great.
But this movie just takes that to another level.
Trust me…AWFUL

It was terrible...
The problem was, while Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones and he is walking and talking in front of you on the big screen & that at least is awesome, it didn’t feel like an Indiana Jones movie. Too much CGI, too much exposition about terrible plot points to begin with, Shia LeBouf (Nothing more needs to be said, and not enough gritty, droll, half-smirking, dust kicked up, Indiana Jones.
It was like Indiana Jones and the Crappy Tomb Raider Ripoff. Give me Raiders any day.

I laughed alot
but at the unintentional humor, not the good kind.
Anyone who thought that ending was a good idea is an idiot.

Interesting from Jayson Stark:
• The best trades never made: Instead of finding himself throwing that no-hitter in Fenway this week, Jon Lester easily could have been wearing a different uniform. And not just a Twins uniform. If the Red Sox had traded for Johan Santana last winter, Lester almost certainly would have wound up in that deal. But four years ago, the Red Sox actually did include him in a trade - for A-Rod - only to have it fall through during A-Rod’s famed contract snafu. The Red Sox had agreed to swap Lester and Manny Ramirez to Texas for A-Rod. But they also would have replaced Lester in their prospect pool by making a companion trade with the White Sox: Nomar Garciaparra for Magglio Ordonez, Brandon McCarthy and left-hander Arnie Munoz. McCarthy was viewed at the time as a comparable prospect. Doesn’t seem like it now. Does he?
Now, I knew of course about the ARod trade falling through, but I did not know about the Nomar-Magglio trade including BMac.
Just shows how highly regarded BMac was, and probably why the Rangers were willing to go get him and lose Danks (not that it’s was a good decision using hindsight).

Speaking of McCarthy... when's he gonna pitch again? 2009?

He's got neck problems now too?
Oh well at least he has people kind enough to visit him in the hospital.
