Minors - 5/23

Today's sked:

CLN-6:30- Feliz
BAK-9:30- Reed
FRS-7:00- Schlact
OKC-7:00- Murray

The white zone is for loading and unloading only.  If you gotta load, or if you gotta unload, go to the white zone.

Clinton Herald article - 5/22 quotes:

Beavan did however face the minimum as Singleton was caught stealing second. Beavan on the night went five innings, struck out three Snappers and gave up the lone hit. Beavan was pulled out before the sixth, but after his warm up pitches.

"I’ve been working on stuff in the bullpen on the side with DC (Danny Clark). My lower back was getting stiff on me I went out and threw a few pitches and with us having a lead they thought it was better to be on the safe side" said Beavan.

...

Santana would have to be taken out of the game after sliding awkwardly into second, he would be replaced by Miguel Alfonzo.

"He rolled his ankle and we put Fonzy in. As of right now we’ll have to reevaluate and see where he is at" said Mike Micucci.

Santana was later spotted with crutches.  I have this feeling he's going to be down for a while.  Bummer.

Daily Oklahoman  - besides news that Botts missed 3 games after suffering a mild strained oblique [might return today], they wrote up Eric Hurley's nice outing yesterday ...

Hurley (2-3) hadn't tasted victory since April 18. In between wins, he had pitched well, and not so well, at times. He scattered six hits over seven innings with three strikeouts Thursday after spending the last week tweaking his delivery. "It's been a grind," he said. "Some things needed to be changed. I definitely made some good adjustments. I've been working on that for the past six days, changing my delivery, wind up and the stretch and it worked out pretty well."

Part of Hurley's struggles involved his form, something that he hasn't felt comfortable with all season. "We're trying to get my body in a little better position so I can hold my form all the way down the hill," he said. "It's something I wanted to do. Everybody liked it today, so I'm going to keep working on it."

My understanding is that Eric is going back to his early years in the minors with going over his head, basically slowing his motion down to  enable him to both locate his fastball down and throw his splitfinger more effectively.  Good start to the delivery changes.  Rinse and repeat.

BA's prospect blog mentions that some primo Oakland prospects are headed to the D.L.  Athletics fans have got to be nervous:

Bret Anderson - left thumb strain

James Simmons - dead arm

Faustino De Los Santos - sore elbow

Z and UT mentioned never seeing Fabio Castillo pitch in a fanpost down below.  There is an archive at the Boise Hawks' website  that has free video of several '07 Spokane starters -  here's Fabio's start - right click on picture to select full screen.

Thomas Diamond speaking with Jason Cole after his '08 debut w/Frisco:

“Hopefully in September I’ll have low enough innings that they’ll give me a chance to make a few starts in the big leagues.”

Stay optimistic, kid.

Hurley

That kinda disturbs me. I don’t know if it is on Hurley or the Rangers pitching coaches but I find it akward that after having pretty good success in the minors he struggles after spending all of spring training in the ML camp and competing for a starting job. He was obviously working with Conner during spring and has struggled out of the gate. He is going back to his early minors days, pre Conner obviously, and had success again. I don’t know enough about Conner or anything but this makes me wonder if he is good for our young pitchers. I think he does really well with our veterans but considering we are building for the future that is supposedly going to be built around a good young staff is he the right guy to nuture those young guys and build them into a dominant staff

by bigsteve on May 23, 2008 1:08 PM CDT   0 recs

It might have more to do

with his change in body size (from 195 to like 220 or so) and his struggles in AAA.

He is getting more ground outs by keeping the FB down. The change in delivery is just probably a way to help him do that.

by FirebatM3 on May 23, 2008 1:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know if Connor is involved in any of this

But FWIW, as I understand it, the delivery element that they are now eschewing [a mid-delivery glove-tap] was meant to accomplish the same thing as the hand-held-high change they’ve made. It’s just that it wasn’t working out too well so they tried another path to the same goal.

And I really like Firebat’s weight-gain theory. It’s a wonder these growing boys are able to keep a consistent performance together over their minor league careers as their bodies change from boys to men.

Didn’t feel like making a new diary, but Ramirez is at the top spot of the BA Hotsheet this week.

Didn't know

Jackson was black. And I’m guessing Mathis gets another shot this week since Murray is starting today.

Santana

Perhaps some time in convalescence will improve his plate discipline.

Cristian

I remember getting misty about Santana’s possibilities in AA this year on MJH’s site, in the comments with him.

If he sees an AB above Clinton this year it’ll be a turnaround.

Promote Max and Davis together

so they can keep spurring each other on.

Is Feliz on a pitch count? Lifted after 5 solid innings.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on May 23, 2008 8:36 PM CDT   0 recs

Perhaps shroom knows about Feliz...

I was thinking the same thing. Was not getting the K’s, but I think he had 9 or 10 groundouts.

Not sure where they could play MaxRam at AAA, but just based on his #’s he could be there.

No idea

Just being careful I imagine.

One thing from this – it doesn’t look like Nolan’s Edict extends as deep as the MWL.

Heh,

Nolan is not a legend in Iowa. He needs to go up there and shuck some corn if he wants them to cower when he talks.

by t ball on May 23, 2008 8:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Last AB's

Max walked and Davis doubled over the first baseman down the line.

Davis is 4/5 with 2 HR”s and 2 doubles. Beasticon.

by shroomer on May 23, 2008 9:33 PM CDT   0 recs

You know

they could each go through a slump, and the positional situation at AAA is not ideal, especially for Ramirez, but these are two of the most significant players in the organization, and you really have to wonder how much they are benefiting from staying in AA at this point. I think that it might be especially counter-productive for Davis, since he needs to work on his approach still, but AA pitchers just aren’t good enough to make him do it. And obviously Ramirez is basically the best hitter for his league in the minor leagues.

by zywica on May 23, 2008 9:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I ask myself almost daily

What are you gonna do with these guys? Promotion seems past due.
The only time they haven’t raked was last Sunday when I attended the double-header. grrr

by shroomer on May 23, 2008 9:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Davis' days in AA are numbered

the problem is what the heck to do with Ramirez. He needs to catch every night. Trade Laird all ready.

by Hull Fan on May 23, 2008 10:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If Laird is traded...

...I don’t know that that helps Max, since I don’t think they’d call up Teagarden to be a backup.

by Adam J. Morris on May 23, 2008 10:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would rather

have TT be the backup for a couple months then the Rangers sign some veteran backup.

Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY

by RangerMad on May 23, 2008 11:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Disagree...

TT and MaxRam should both be catching everyday. Leave then where they are until at least Sept.

I think MaxRam could make the jump from AA to the bigs as a DH and backup CA/1B for the last month of the season and then decide what to do with him in the winter.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on May 24, 2008 12:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think it does him any good to leave him where he is.

I agree that he should be catching (ideally) every day, but on the other hand, how long can you go without rewarding a guy who has been essentially the best hitter in your system?

by LiamP on May 24, 2008 12:28 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

and arguably

the best hitter in organized baseball for his level

by zywica on May 24, 2008 12:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You could easily make that argument.

Dude’s hit a homer in 4 straight games too. Hadn’t noticed that.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=p_pbp&did=milb&pid=445615

His splits are just insane.

by LiamP on May 24, 2008 12:45 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh, I'm well aware.

Those numbers are just fun to look at. Plus…

JParks : Matt Harrison :: Me : Max Ramirez.

by LiamP on May 24, 2008 1:11 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You can

stuff your sample size in a sack, mister. :)

Two months of a 1200 OPS to start a season deserves a promotion.

by zywica on May 24, 2008 12:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought LiamP

was taking about his righty/lefty splits.

by coolaid on May 24, 2008 12:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ramirez

is awesome with any sample you choose this year.

Look at his stats in that link. EVERY single split is over the 1.000 mark in OPS. This guy is beyond beast. He has graduated to mythical monster status.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on May 24, 2008 12:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah...

no one will argue that he isn’t ready to move up offensively. It’s just a matter of whether or not you want to DH the guy 5 times a week and let him catch once or twice a week for TT.

Bottom line is Gold needs to step aside in OKC and Arias needs to get his ass out in the field and stop DHing. Davis should be at 1B and Botts would DH. If MaxRam comes up you would have Cruz, JMJ, and Botts in the OF and they can’t play CF so Botts gets bumped which is no big deal. Or you could call up Cruz and send down Boggs.

It’s nice to have guys performing at all levels right now in the minors. Guys needing to be promoted is a great problem to have. Our minor league system is just stacked right now. It’s going to be fun to watch it all unfold.

Nate Gold

Had a golden sombrero tonight. He hasn’t been hitting well, and definitely not well enough for a dude that’s blocking a legit prospect that has nothing left to prove at AA. I think Chris will be in Oklahoma before the end of next week.

I honest to god have no idea what we’re going to do with Max. He’s been better than Davis, but has literally no position at AAA apart from DH.

by LiamP on May 23, 2008 10:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You could always

do the same thing with him and Teagarden that you did in Frisco, but they seem to like the way that Ramirez has reacted defensively to playing every day much more than when he was splitting time.

Also, I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned here lately, but Teagarden has really settled in nicely in AAA after a brief slow start.

by zywica on May 23, 2008 10:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah.

It’s one thing to do it in the majors, but platooning those two, especially when both of them need all the time they can get back there, is a bad idea IMO. That’s the only problem when you have a dude with the defensive potential (and the age) of TayTea and a dude smashing the crap out of the ball like Max.

by LiamP on May 23, 2008 10:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Promotions

If the Rangers don’t see a way to get Davis and Max into AAA I’ll bet they just put them in Arlington later this year and live with the slumping.

The Rangers look almost as bad winning lately as they did losing last month. I don’t think they’re going to be in it in July, and there will be a lot of action. I fully expect Teagarden, Ramirez and Davis all to be in Arlington by the end of the year. The only sticky wicket is Bradley is he’s never healthy enough to play in the outfield. But some team is going to offer enough to warrant dealing him.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

MaxRam

played some 1B tonight according to the box. He and Frostad apparently swapped positions at some point.

by zywica on May 23, 2008 11:49 PM CDT   0 recs

whoa, didn't notice that

Tulsa Bottom 9th:

Defensive switch from catcher to first base for Max Ramirez.
Defensive switch from first base to catcher for Emerson Frostad.
Daniel Carte pops out to third baseman Adam Fox in foul territory.
Justin Nelson grounds out, second baseman Thomas Berkery to first baseman Max Ramirez.
Jeffrey Dragicevich walks.
Brian Esposito strikes out swinging.

So, at least he didn’t blow his one chance there.

DSL question

I found the 2008 sked and it lists 2 teams for the Rangers. That’s different, right?
They only had 1 team last year, IIRC. Expanding the Latin talent filter a bit, eh?

Huh,

very interesting. Hope there’s another Kennil Gomez down there somewhere that will surprise us in 2010.

thats a great sign. mets and yanks both have multiple DSL and VSL teams. great to see the rangers mimicking that. there are cheaper options.
