Is Mark Teixeira costing himself money?
With the season he is having, did he make a huge mistake turning down the Rangers offer?
I Know teams love his age, the fact he is a switch hitter, and his great defense at 1b but for some reason I have not seen any diaries about what a mediocre year he is having. Are teams going to be willing to commit 20-25 million a year to this guy?
Just for fun Here is how his year compares to David Murphy
David Murphy Mark Teixeira
.291 Avg .262
.336 OBP .348
.483 Slg .415
6 Hr 5
35 Rbi 27
I was also looking up some stats today and noticed that Ichiro only has 13 rbis this year and after looking it up he has never had even 70 rbis in a single year, with his career low being 51. I know he is a leadoff hitter but I just never realized how low his totals were.

teixeira was slowly getting his numbers to respectability
but then he went 0 for 11 the last few days.
anyway, i fully expect he turns it around and still gets a huge payday, even if he has hurt himself a bit here.

Tex
This isn’t out of place for Tex. He usually starts slowly (although not quite this slowly). He will more than likely heat up in the second half.
Career OPS:
First Half: .868
Second Half: .938
Also, look at his career OPS by month:
Apr/Mar: .787
May: .876
June: .900
July: .890
Aug: .952
Sep/Oct: .989

lefties
Teixeira is really struggling vs LHP this year. However, he will probably put up his usual .900+ OPS in the second half. Remember, the NYY, NYM, BAL and others will be looking for a firstbaseman next year. I don’t think his slow start is hurting him too much. I am sure Boras will put some positive spin on it.

He's always
been overrated, he has never shown that he could be a consistent hitter.
He isn’t worth over 100 million.

I wouldn't worry about Mark Teixeira
If Scott Boras will get him his big contract – just look at what he did for Andruw Jones.

If the Yanks pay him $20-25 mil a year
they are morons. I don’t think Hank Steinbrenner do it, he seems to know what he is doing.

Based on what?
What makes you think Hank knows what he is doing?

Tex will get a big contract,
but I bet he’s gonna think that it should have been bigger. Both NY teams need first basemen, but otherwise his timing is bad. He’s having a down year and there have been so many conspicuous free agent busts lately, coupled with the trend of the young free-agent-less teams doing well… i’ll be surprised if he gets 20 mil a year, but i’m always surprised by the willingness of the owners to money-whip players.

Down year?
He has always hit this bad the first half of the season.
This shouldn’t be surprising at all, he is a second half season player.

misconception
OPS from start of season through June 30
2003 – .803
2004 – .844
2005 – .930
2006 – .793
2007 – .959
2008 – .776
Theres no argument he has been better in the 2nd half but the perception that he is purely a 2nd half player and always starts off slow is not accurate.

didn't Tex...
invariably hit a lot more homers and have a lot more RBI’s in the second half for most of his time here. Yes his OPS may have been not bad in the first half but he was a lot more productive in the second. Like Evan Grant said more than once “What the Rangers want from Teixera more than anything is consistency.” That pretty much sums it up- Thanks Evan!

did a lit'l research...
In 2006 before the season started is when Evan said…”what the Rangers want more from Teixeira more than anything is consistency” and then he went out and did this in 2006 to pretty much solidy Evans case.
Pre all star break:
9 home runs and 49 RBI’s in 88 games
Post all star break
24 home runs and 61 RBI’s in 74 games
He hit almost 3 times as many home runs in 14 less games.
That’s the inconsistency Evan was talking about. YES his OPS may have been good in the first half which tells me he was probably hitting a lot of doubles. I’d much rather have three times as many HR”s from Tex and more RBI’s than a bunch of doubles. But that’s just me :).
Tex historically hits a lot more home runs in the second half that’s how the racks up those impressive RBI totals. This year is just another example of that. I love the Murph but come on now, his stats are more impressive than Tex’s are at this point, that says a lot. Look at the post from BAC , his OPS always gets better as the year goes on. There is no way around that.

diaries
I would like to think you haven’t seen many diaries about Teix because he doesn’t play for the Rangers anymore…
by bushe on May 27, 2008 7:44 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Ditto
He is way down the list of things that need discussing around here since he’s no longer here, and will never sign here. A diary is warranted if he’s rumored to go to the Angels, Mariners, or A’s, or if he actually signs a contract.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

I think OC's making a reference to the time CJ Wilson said that on his blog
Regarding the Mark Teixeira trade. Either way, Geico jokes are timeless if they’re not overused.
