OMG!
That is such an original, inspired post! Why didn’t I ever think those thoughts. Your prose is stunning in it’s eloquence.
I am so impressed I will leave this forum posthaste, in honor of your brilliance.

How many years did it take Pena to become good after we traded him?
It seems like an awful lot… last year was the first time he was good.
Well
The first year he was REALLY good.

Random fact of the day...
It is mothers day in the DR.

Watching a Yankees game recently...
and there was someone banging on the rail near one of the mics, over and over and over again.
That beat from “Put Me in Coach.” It got so bad, that it drove the people in my apartment nuts who weren’t even watching the game.
If you're sitting in your seat...
and that guy is even CLOSE to you, how do you NOT say something?
Security? Fan Mob? Anything.
It was against the Yankees
So I chose to put up with it because his presence neutralized the ridiculous faux-New Yorkers in our section.

That's unfortunate luck

Somewhere, Victor Zambrano is filling out a AAA roster...
and Steve Phillips is being asked for insight on a national television program.
It was Jim Duquette
But don’t let that stop you, Phillips was a terrible GM and he’s only slightly better on TV.

WHY don’t we ever have a guy like a Kazmir or a Linceum on the staff instead of the:
revolving lazy susan loaded with clowns…. SIGH

You would think we’d get lucky with one great pitcher… Just one…
"We will look back in 20 years, and say that Clayton Kershaw was one of the best pitchers of all time" - me
YOU
mean like Volquez, Danks, ahhhhh no you said lucky so maybe you mean Chris Young, yesss yesss I do believe we got lucky there yet the Buckmeiser said NO, NO we will not have young talented pitching here.

I wouldn't
put those pitchers at the same level as Linceum or Kazmir, what I would like to have those guys back…
Too bad BMAC is to injury prone to show us what he has.

sooner or later, you have to quit making excuses against the Rays...
this team has had our number the last couple of years.
Really?
Perhaps at home, but whenever I see a trip to Arlington on the schedule I groan because we always seem to do poorly there.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 26, 2008 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions
swept us two years ago on their turf...
...swept us last year in Orlando… and people use injuries as an excuse…
didn’t Edwin Jackson throw a complete game shutout last year at the Ballpark?
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions
made a comment about this series the other day...
...and someone said… “well, last year we had so many players injured…”
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
Granting that, there’s really no relationship to this series or this season, as they are clearly a better team, regardless of our health.
by brettgardner on May 26, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Didn't we cream Jackson last year...
in the same game they creamed Jamey Wright? I want to say I remember a game like that.
I remember Jackson struggling at Arlington twice
In early ‘06 and early ‘07. In ‘06 I remember he was making a spot start. In ‘07 he was in the rotation and sucked as a permanent member.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 26, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Jackson had success there, I remember last year
But I think we lost at least two of three in April of last year in Arlington. We did sweep you all at Disney, but you all just kill us in Arlington most of the time.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 26, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
that's the point i'm trying to make...
...how is it that we can play this team poorly in Florida, and yet take a series from them at home?
is the Trop really as distracting as it seems to be? a near empty dome, with a heckler and horns, and cowbells, and artificial turf?
that’s no excuse.
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
This year, the excuse is the Rays are actually a good team
And Kazmir is a great pitcher. Even though we’re getting creamed, I don’t see any shame in it.
A Lonestar in California - 2.0
"I LOVE to fart" - Bert Blyleven
that's no excuse...
...because this ballclub is better too.
right now… do you think the Rays have more talent in their dugout than we do?
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions
it's a fair question...
...i think our line-up matches up…
...obviously… the rotation and their defense is a different matter.
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think
It’s close, really. Longoria is already better than Vazquez, Hamilton would be the only OF’er to start there, obviously Pena demolishes anything we have, even if he’s off to a less-than-thrilling start. We have a better SS, 2B, and C(s).
by brettgardner on May 26, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
actually it's close.
DH, CF, 2nd, SS, 3B, C us. Murphy vs Hinski is kinda close, especially because Murph can play D and Hinski is just another DH out there.
Uh.
It would be Crawford/Upton/Hamilton in the OF. I’m not sure why you’re comparing individual OF spots when you could easily plug Hamilton at RF.
I also have absolutely no idea why you think it would be 3B us.
3B right now.
i think that was OC’s question. Longhoria is not a better hitter than Vazquez right now.
So is
Your non-response.
If you’re suggesting that Shelton is a better player than Pena at any point of any season, I think you’re going to have a hard time finding any takers.
Make a point if you believe in it. Grasping at straws to fit a point makes you seem desperate.
by brettgardner on May 26, 2008 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions
no...
...Shelton works counts better.
Pena leads the league in strikeouts…
neither of them hit for average.
by oc on May 26, 2008 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
If you're seriously going to
Compare the two, I guess I’ll have to go find my stat sheet. I’ll start at the part where Shelton didn’t sniff the majors last year, while Pena hit a paltry 46 HRs with a 1.038 OPS.
Seriously, pick your battles.
by brettgardner on May 26, 2008 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions
okay
“pena demolishes anything we have”
His career OPS+ is 123
Shelton’s is 116
Outside of one very fluky year by Pena, Shelton might not be better, but he is probably on par with Pena and he is younger.
OK
If you believe that, then good for you. Doubt you’ll find many who agree.
by brettgardner on May 26, 2008 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions
i'll agree...
...i’ll take the guy that works a count over a guy who is historically known for striking out.

We are getting shut down by Kazmir tonight
We’ve faced four really good pitchers the last four days. I see no reason to panic that we have been shut down by 3 out of those 4 starters, who routinely shut down the rest of the league.
If we get shut down by Sonnastine tomorrow, then I’ll be concerned.
A Lonestar in California - 2.0
"I LOVE to fart" - Bert Blyleven
Look at it this way...
In the last 4 games we’ve faced:
Fausto Carmona, Cliff Lee, C.C. Sabathia, and Scott Kazmir
We’ll probably be .500 over those 4 games, not TOO bad. Watching a loss is never fun though.
Rangers pitching
3rd worst ERA
Given up the most hits
Given up the most walks
Struck out the fewest batters.
Worst WHIP.
Sign Sabathia AND sheets next year. We got the cash.

At least Dusty Baker's not managing the "Angles"
In a couple more innings, we’d see Lackey pitch a few innings, then Weaver
Bartolo Colon pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball for the Sawks... Felix pitched 7.2, gave up 5 runs
2 outs in Anaheim
Interesting decision

Just got back from the game
There were PLENTY of good seats in the Trop. Way to go, Rays fans… gotta love it when you are on a winning streak, in first place, and your fans still won’t make a good showing on a holiday evening. I was able to sit down low behind the Rangers dugout. I was sitting next to an obnoxious Rays fan sporting a fanny pack and jorts. He and his son kept bitching that the Pena skyball should have been a home run. I said to my wife that Hamilton would have caught that ball had the catwalk not gobbled up the ball and he interjected with… OUR HOUSE, OUR RULES!!! Apparently, their rules also included wearing jorts. Just awful.

by SarasotaRanger on May 26, 2008 11:50 PM CDT reply actions
Their house, their rules...
their ground rules say that catwalk is in play… that makes it a ground-rule double if it gets stuck there… the other catwalks are out of play and thus home runs
I know...
they were bitching that it was a home run and I knew that, under their rules, it was a double. They have 3 rings: A,B, and C. You have to hit the mother of all popups to hit the A ring and that is an out. Pena hit the B ring which is a double. The C ring is almost over the outfield wall and is a home run. It clearly hit the B ring catwalk, but genius didn’t know his team’s own rules.
