Giant DMN Rangers newsletter up
Evan Grant has, I think, set a record for the longest Rangers newsletter ever...according to Microsoft Word, it comes in at 4,497 words, and leads off with an analysis of Michael Young's defense and his inevitable move to third base that includes RZR and ZR. We also have a lot of Josh Hamilton talk, some discussion of the upcoming draft, a couple of questions grousing about pitchers who aren't here anymore, C.J. Wilson as closer...
A whole lot of good stuff this week...check it out...

doesnt seem convinced he actually needs to move to 3rd. i agree with the sentiment that you dont move young until you have a legitimately good SS to replace him with, which we dont have and I dont think andrus will be for opening day 2009. id still much rather leave blalock at 3b and young at ss through most of 2009, breaking in andrus down the stretch that point. if andrus looks good, then I would have let blalock move on and moved young. its not like you need a lot of time to learn 3b.
also, i greatly disagree with the fan saying hamilton is a liability in CF. a few mis-judged liners are equivilant to a kinslers mental mistakes. i think they are both still good fielders.
and i dont think the rangers need to try to sign hamilton for at least another year or two and we see how he holds up. unless he is going to be so team friendly that you cant turn it down.

Hamilton
Im pretty sure he will be a Super 2 after this year so signing him now would probably be the most economic thing to do. I had my doubts before the season as many did but these first two months have rid me of all my fears about the guy not living up to expectations. I think if he was a true injury risk one would have popped up by now seeing as how he has played just about everyday. If he gets injured now it will be an injury that would have occurred no matter what.

Hamilton isn't going to be a Super Two
He’ll have exactly two years of service time under his belt after this season’s up.
From the MLBPA FAQ:
“A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a “Super Two” and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.“

I wouldn't call Hamilton a good fielder.
But I wouldn’t call him a liability, either, and I think he’s improved. He’s so athletic if he gets his fundementals down I think he could be pretty good. It also seems, anecdotally, like he plays out of position a lot.
I think he might end up being a centerfielder sort of like Mickey Mantle. Capable of handling center because of his speed and quickness, but not the best. I’ve read often about how the Mick would make spectacular plays on balls no one else would get to, while a routine play that everyone else could field skips on by. I think that’s Hamilton.

Personally, I don't think
anyone has seen enough out of Andrus to say he will even be ready by 2010. I don’t think you can do any roster planning at all based on Andrus.

okay
looking at the replay, Barry did everything wrong on that play. He didn’t jump into Fisher right after Fisher jumped, he paused, dribbled and he actually threw out his left arm into Fisher before he took his shot. There was a bump there of course, but there’s bumping on every play with the guy driving to the basket against his defender. I dunno. Whatever. What do you think dirkster? Barry is no Dwayde.

I've only heard it a couple times...
but I don’t understand how anyone can see Hamslam as a below average CFer. Yes he has misjudged 2 or 3 liners hit right at you, but any OFer will tell you that is the toughest ball to judge. Grant makes a good point about how much he has actually played in CF also.
I’m fimly behind BGL as the closer as well, but Grant brings up a good point about BGL last year being so out spoken about wanting the job at such a young age with little experience. I really hadn’t thought about that.

BGL
never so much hand wringing about 10 saves and 2 blown saves coming up on 2 months.
the only reason im slightly worried is the low k rate. i dont care about doing poorly in some non save situations he was in on short rest that the rangers won 2 of 3 of anyway. but i would like him to miss more bats.

Geez, a little harsh?
I like Josh Hamilton, his powerful bat and his home run presence, but I think that whoever said he was a great center fielder when we first got him was a joke.Hamilton is an obvious defensive liability in center field, constantly misplaying fly balls, loosing two or three fly balls in the sun, and misjudging fly balls that are hit over his head, constantly costing the Rangers runs and ballgames. Ron Washington either needs to move Hamilton to right field or else make him the DH to still keep his powerful bat in the lineup every day.
He’s also providing runs and winning ballgames….

Yeah, there were alot of haters in that mailbag, not just that looser
Kind of surprised me, considering the quality ball we’ve been playing.

There are some
Priggish types out there, who don’t consider themselves haters. But they do stereotype people. The same folks who think ‘once a druggie, always a druggie’, etc. They may not even be conscious of that bias. And when they are right, part of the time, they reinforce the priggishness enough to make public their disdain for “__ sort of people” (whomever that sort might be tagged).

Yea, that comment was mind-boggling
He’s not the fastest CF in the league, but he’s not a liability by any means. What games did he cost us in the field? I can’t remember any. In contrast, consider how many games the Rangers wouldn’t have won if he didn’t knock runs in.
