FOTF's Hit Streak

On May 13, Michael Young went 0-3 with a walk against Seattle.  After that game, this was his line for the season:
.286/.358/.409 which equates to an OPS of .767

Since then, he has gone on a 13 game hit streak which he continued last night with a 1-5 performance.  After last night's game, this is his line for the season:
.279/.340/.406 which equates to an OPS of .746

So in his 13 game hit streak, his BA has dropped 7 points, his OBP has dropped 18 points, his slugging has dropped 3 points which for all you math majors out there means his OPS has dropped 21 points.

During the streak he has had 4 two hit games and 9 one hit games.  For the 13 games, he is 17 out of 65 which equates to a BA of .262

He has drawn 3 walks which gives him an OBP of .294 for the streak.

He has 3 doubles, 2 Home Runs and 12 singles.  That gives him 26 TB during the streak.  That gives him a SLG% of .400 for the streak.

So he has a .262/.294/.400 line during his current 13 game hit streak.

Not ground breaking stuff...just interesting that some may look at a 13 game hit streak and say Michael Young is hot right now.  But clearly, he is one of the coldest hot hitters going right now.  It's also a great example of how crazy baseball stats can be.

Nice post

It also points out how useless his consecutive 200 hit streak is. It was infuriating last year to hear and read about people being so excited about him getting to 200 hits like it’s a really important thing.

200 hits

when you think of how many thousands of players and hundreds of really good ones have played entire careers and MY is up there with wade boggs and ichiro for consecutive 200 hit seasons.. how can you not be a little impressed and want to see it continue?

i dont think a 200 hit season by itself is all that meaningful, but i want to see young’s streak continue.

anyway, young has definitely looked bad in the hit streak so far. fortunately kinsler, hamilton, bradley and murph have covered it up lately and it hasnt been too annoying outside of that one 3 game losing streak where my was also bad.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

200 hits may not be

the biggest thing a player could accomplish, but it’s hardly a negative. Consistency is important, too, and if a guy gets 200 hits every year, he’s been valuable. It doesn’t warrant the gigantic contract he got, but that’s a different story.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Are you serious?

Consecutive 200 hit seasons mean a lot.

204 hits in 2003 meant...

...an OPS+ of 97 (or 3% below league average) and last year 201 hits meant an OPS+ of 107. Not bad but it does show that all counting stats must be considered in their proper context.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on May 28, 2008 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

it also meant

he was in the lineup often enough to get 200 hits. Would you rather have a 900 OPS in 100 ABs with a 600 OPS in 400 AB backup or a 750 OPS in 500 ABs. Also it should not be overlooked how uncommon it is to have an SS who is above league average hitting.

A fair point but...

...all I’m saying is be sure to look at the whole picture. Offense, defense, durability, etc.

I think when you look at the whole picture you will see that MY is an above-average player and certainly one of the four most valuable position players on the Rangers.

I wonder where he would rank

in Hits+Walks.

I think a better stat to look at...

...would be his OBP vs. league average OBP.

For his career it is .347 (MY) vs. .342 (league average).

Which is awfully nice

to have from a SS.

It is nice...

...but not $16MM/yr nice. And not nice to the point that he should be considered anything close to a top ten or even top twenty player in the league.

Who said

he was a top ten player in the league? If someone came on here and said that I’d be all over them, but I will also defend him and his 200 hits as being valuable and rightly praised.

It just seems to me that most folks have an all or nothing stance on Young. He is a very good baseball player, solid, dependable and very highly respected by his colleagues in the clubhouse. Guess what, he’s No. 1 in OPS and 2nd in Win Shares among AL shortstops. Isn’t that a good thing?

For long time Young was underrated. Then people said he was underrated so much that he became overrated. Now I’m starting to think the backlash against that is making him underrated again.

Please don't take it personally...

...I have never seen you say anything close to that about MY. In fact you (like most of the posters on LSB) are very reasonable in your assessment of his value.

However, most fans (and a few local media types) put him on a pedestal and would think it foolish to say he is anything less than a superstar and the best player on the Rangers.

Not taking it personally,

I just got animated there for a second. I think the pedestal thing is somewhat true of the Newberg boarders and more casual fans. But I think LSB posters often go overboard in trying to be smarter than the average fan and try too hard to beat down conventional wisdom.

Well I'm an iconoclast at heart...

...and as such I feel I have a duty to tear down these popular figures.

13 games

which is a very small sample size. The fact he happens to have a hit in each of those 13 games doesn’t mean it’s a valid sample (I know you’re not implying that). Hard to believe someone could have a .262 BA during a hitting streak. In fact, it’s almost amazing.

What happened to my old signature?

by WyoRanger on May 28, 2008 9:22 AM CDT reply actions

Young

The contract was horrible and there’s no way he should be playing SS behind a ground ball pitching staff, but he’s not a bad hitter. When that guy locks in, he locks in for extended periods. And when he’s cold it doesn’t seem like I notice it as much for some reason.

Still think he’d be a GG-caliber third bagger. Don’t care if he has power or not…that’s where he should play.

+1

Especially if that power will be made up from other locations typically lacking in power (2B, C, CF).
