Duran, Loe likely demoted

http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080528&content_id=2788004&vkey=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex

Makes sense, I mean Duran hasn't been impressive offensively, but he sure has opened up eyes with his versitality.  Also, I think he is a huge part of the future being our utility guy who plays more on the field then he does warming up the bench.  This basically says it all, "However, his recent slump left the Rangers in a bind, as manager Ron Washington acknowledged on Monday that Duran would benefit from daily playing time. "  True dat playa.

Loe on the other hand I was really hoping to see flourish into a long man role this year, but he still needs a lot of work.  He can also benifit from being sent down.

Metcalf can only play the hot corner so this move is very surprising.  Maybe they have him playing more at third and Vazquez playing more positions around the infield.  Not sure where they are going with this.

Glad that the Milly is back.  Hope all is well and hopefully he adds an extra boost to a depleted rotation that really has only seen consistant starts from Padz.  Ponson follows that but he, I would think, is still on a leash.

Here is the million dollar question, Is Duran being sent down a mistake?  I mean it can only benefit him in the long run, but bringing up Metcalf to replace him is silly, imo.

I really liked Metcalf

the times I was able to see him play last year. And his bat seemed to come along this spring.

Well,

my wrestling personality is Big Badd Bubba J, and yes that’s two D’s on the badd cause I’m just that badd. Obviously that career didn’t pan out, but the name did. It stuck and everywhere I go people know me as a form of that name(ie. Bubba J, B3J, Bubba).

When the old version of SB Nation was out I could choose more than one name. On Buffalo Rumblings they know me as B3J and BigBaddBubbaJ.

That about take care of that explaination.

I don't

like demoting Duran. If he’s a future utility guy, he won’t get regular at-bats anyway. Metcalf is nothing to me.

Could be something there.

But I dont know how they would split the time between Gentry, Murphy, Majewski, Harrison and Borbon in the OF/DH.

by coolaid on May 28, 2008 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

There was talk a couple days ago about Harrison moving to AAA, although that scenario involved cutting Gold. And then you’d cut Botts to get Max into the AAA lineup.

Borbon just hit a no-doubter 3-run HR

add it to a double and a walk so far tonight. Kid’s ripe, but … Servais likes keeping groups together supposedly. Per SRL, BAK plays the last 14 games in the first half against the 2 teams they’re battling against for the 1st half crown. He might want to leave Borbon there for 2 more weeks to help the lads.

BTW – Vallejo just hit an inside-the-park HR. Add that to a conventional model he hit earlier in the game.

by shroomer on May 28, 2008 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Metcalf? Really?

I’d rather platoon Vazquez/Duran.

As for Loe:

He can also benifit from being sent down.

I think you’re better off just letting him pitch long relief up here, while you can. I don’t know who you send down to make room for him, though. I would assume it would have to be one of Gabbard/Mathis/Rupe.

I wouldn’t mind sticking Murray in the rotation, with Loe and one of Mathis/Rupe as your long men.

Anybody know why the OKC game was suspended in the 4th?
It’s not weather related. Just says “other.”

by shroomer on May 28, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

OKC game suspended due to acid spill
OMAHA, NE – A spill of hydrochloric acid at a railway yard south of Rosenblatt Stadium tonight forced the suspension of the Omaha Royals game vs. the Oklahoma RedHawks. Local authorities ordered the evacuation of the ballpark, as well as some homes in the area.
The game was suspended at the end of four innings with Oklahoma leading 2-1. The nine-inning contest will be concluded tomorrow, Thursday, May 29th with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch and will be followed by a seven-inning game. The stadium gates will open at 4:00 p.m.

I have to say

7 innings of one hit ball isn’t too bad, though.

by clark on May 28, 2008 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

I’m starting to think Z has a point – Gomez might be the first to see BAK. You look at his solid 2006 in the DSL [18], solid 2007 in AZ [19] and now his outstanding 2008 [20] it’s apparent we all overlooked him – I guess because he’s a year or two older than the sexy guys like Font and Fabio. But he’s just a month older than Feliz who we all still think of as young. Wouldn’t it be wild if the un-ballyhooed Gomez turns out to be the Carmona-esque guy down the road out of all these Latin arms?

CLN’s 2nd half rotation? – Beavan, Castillo, Main, Feliz, Tatusko. Ramirez could arrive after a good start w/Spokane to replace a promoted Feliz.

Spokane’s rotation – Ramirez, Font, Pimentel, coupla ‘08 college draftees – O’Campo and a Latin arm to be added in July or August. Ben Henry, Grullon or Wilkins maybe getting a look, too. Yoon-hee Nam anybody?

And if we get another young arm or two in deadline deals those noobies could be squeezed into a rotation somewhere in the system. Or a “sell trade” at the deadline could see a package of these guys head to another franchise for a singular talent.

sigh – we’re loaded – yep

by shroomer on May 28, 2008 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

This team could justify

both Feliz and Gomez moving to BAK in the near future. Not sure who moves on from BAK.

Also, I would just like to commend Jared Hyatt for starting strong. Not bad for a late round draft pick in 07, if I am not mistaken.

by clark on May 28, 2008 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

not sure about that

reed has struggled a bit in BAK. They could probably promote a guy like Hyatt to Frisco and not necessarily put him in the rotation.

by clark on May 28, 2008 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

3 of his last 4 have been decent enough. Plus, he did well when he was called up for a spot start.

I don’t know. I wouldn’t be opposed to throwing him in the deep end and seeing how he does.

by LiamP on May 28, 2008 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

The Rangers rarely do that, however, they have shown a little aggressiveness with Hunter so far.

by clark on May 28, 2008 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Promotions

If Feliz and Gomez should see BAK soon, I think Reed should be moved to Frisco.

After that excellent spot-start he had in Frisco in mid-april, he’s pitched very well for the most part—but his ERA is skewed by getting shelled twice in his last seven outings.

Reed’s 5.30 ERA in BAK (after what’s looking to be a quality start tonight through 5 IP) is largely a result of bad luck: .407 BABIP, while for the rest of his career it has been well below .300. My speculation would be that Lil’ Lemon’s fielding (more than an error every 3 games) and Whittleman’s sub-par defensively ability have contributed to the poor defense behind him. Gerrard could be a liability in RF—not sure.

Btw: Marcus Lemon is leading Bakersfield in OPS with .830. That is awesome—he’s the youngest person on the squad.

Damn, just saw LiamP’s post pop up while I was looking up all these stats =)

Phillips

I have a feeling Phillips wouldn’t exactly wilt if promoted to AA. In his last 10 starts his ERA is 4.58. Those 10 games include outings where he gave up 9 ER’s at High Desert and 9 ER’s at Lancaster.

Rick Adair once told Jason Cole that he thinks guys who curve the ball are hindered mightily by the dry thin air found in the Cal League locales. They just don’t get the bite they need to be optimally effective. R.A. Dickey always complained about what the AZ climate did to his knuckleball in the Spring. Being a FB/CB guy, Phillips could find himself defenseless occasionally if Adair is correct.

Phillips got shelled in High Desert – which ain’t exactly a marshy environment, and got shelled at Lancaster, which is like a crab getting shelled at Pappadeaux. It happens nightly there.

His walks need to improve, but maybe some humid Texas air would improve his CB command. So, rationalizing like a big dog – maybe Phillips could cowboy up and take on the Texas League if they needed room in BAK.

by shroomer on May 28, 2008 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i would love to see

how pitching in Frisco would affect his game. I am still very high on that guy.

And good job on the crab line. Well done, sir.

by clark on May 28, 2008 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

as long as we are talking promotions

the case could probably be made for Borbon to head up to frisco pretty soon, and for Whittleman to head there as well. Frosty could probably jump to OKC so Duran doesn’t have to play 3B all the time.

by clark on May 28, 2008 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds good

send that “group” up there: Borbon, Whit, Phillips, Reed, I would say even Lemon (though he would have to move to 2B, obviously). But on 2nd thought, Lemon could probably use another 100 AB’s in BAK before being moved up, considering the injuries that cost him a little time. Hyatt for Hodges even.

Both Harrisons need to be promoted to AAA immediately: Ben is CD’ing the Texas League with a 1.080 OPS.

What was Thomas Diamond's

velocity before the TJ? Just wondering.

One of his FB was clocked at 91 (probably not his best).

by coolaid on May 28, 2008 8:11 PM CDT reply actions

Diamond and Gomez -- Final Lines

Diamond—5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO

Looked good for a guy who was only making his second start after coming back from TJ.

Gomez—7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO.

So far for Gomez 13 BB and 45 SO in 57 IP. Also has only given up 39 hits.

by coolaid on May 28, 2008 9:13 PM CDT reply actions

if my rudimentary math is correct

that is good for a WHIP under 1. The Rangers, of course, cannot comprehend that.

by clark on May 28, 2008 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

It's 58 baserunners is 57 Innings

Not quite under 1…..but I’m certainly not complaining

by SaltyDawg on May 28, 2008 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

i think you added

his walks and strikeout totals. his walks plus hits is only 52

by clark on May 28, 2008 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, my fault

That puts his WHIP at 0.91. Anyone know what the BABIP against him is? Because he is definitely keeping folks off the base paths.

Thanks for catching that error clark.

Just looked it up myself

It was at .248 heading into tonight. Even with that, he is putting up some very impressive numbers and showing good control.

by SaltyDawg on May 28, 2008 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

the crazy thing is

according to the clinton website, Beaven has a WHIP of .87, Gomez of .91, Feliz of 1.03, and Castillo of 1.06. That is nasty.
