A flurry of roster moves
The Rangers have announced several moves...
Kevin Millwood is activated from the d.l., and Travis Metcalf has been recalled from AAA.
German Duran and Kam Loe have been optioned to AAA.
Franklyn German cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Oklahoma, although he has 72 hours to decide whether to accept the outright assignment or become a free agent.

I like it, I like it
ood to see Millwood back. Duran needs consistent ABs at OKC. Besides, Metcalf > than Duran. Glad to see the Rangers keep Mathis. Loe’s time has come and gone.

yay! a guy that should be good for 6 innings a start! hopefully he iis better than what he was earlier this year.
latest update on bmac?
if gabbard doesn’t go to the DL for whatever reason, should be be sent to the bullpen temporarily? though i guess his walks aren’t really good for bailing a starter out…hmm

Danks

It sickens me to know we held onto Danks for so long, believing he was going to be the real deal… passed up on Beckett to hold onto him… and traded him for a relatively unproven pitcher who’s fallen apart. Both Danks and Masset have low ERA’s, with Danks sporting a solid 1.20 WHIP. This really is the suck.

Passed up on Beckett...
I believe that this is a common misconception based on media reports. I honestly believe that Hanley ramirez was the player that the Marlins wanted all along. I don’t believe that the Rangers ever had a legit shot at landing Beckett, unless Boston refused to trade Ramirez.

Beckett
I’m pretty sure the Marlins were close to accepting our offer. But when Boston offered Hanley, they leapt at it, and we had no shot.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

It's no secret
JD was hesitant to move Danks for Beckett. That delay could have been the difference. Again, I say could… I really don’t know for sure. I’m just disappointed we possibly missed out on a WS MVP for a guy we were later willing to give up. Regardless, if a frog had wings….....

I don't doubt there was hesitation
But I’m pretty sure Florida would hold out a bit longer to see if they could get a better offer. Either way, I’m not losing any sleep over this one.

wasn't just Danks
Remember the other piece to that deal was Blalock. Remember at the time of that trade rumor Blalock was coming off his 2nd straight badass season. He was considered one of the best young players in the game and at the time the package of he and Danks for Beckett was not a fair trade especially when they were also insisting we take on Mike Lowells contract after he had two straight piss poor seasons.
Now granted since then Beckett has turned out like most thought he would, Blalock has had a couple really bad seasons and an injury filled one, Danks has progressed into a nice ML pitcher, and Lowell has refound whatever it was he was missing in Florida. If we would have known all that was going to happen then yeah we should have never let the Red Sox have a chance to throw Ramirez in the deal and we should have taken it but reality is we had no idea all those things were going to occur. Can’t really fault anyone for that.

You make an interesting point about Blalock...
but go back and look at his 2003+2004 and compare that to Lowell’s. They’re pretty much dead on in avg/hr/rbi.

yeah 03 and 04
but in 05 Lowell had a horrible year and at the age of 31 you had to figure his career was in decline. While Blalock at the age of 24 in ‘05 had another solid year. You couldn’t predict his career would go the way it has since then. Plus add in the fact that Lowell was on the hook for 18 million over the next 2 years while Blalock just signed his contract and has only made a little less than 8 million over the last two years and it just adds more to the side of it was a good decision at the time to hold on to them.

+1 for your arguments
If we were gonna hold onto Danks tightly and trade him selectively, I’d rather have traded him for a proven talent. Beckett was, but you make good points about the rest of the deal. I disagree that McCarthy was that guy for reasons already stated.

relatively unproven
You must have made a misprint. Im sure you meant a superior minor league pitcher who had over a full year of major league experience and was one of the highest regarded pitching prospects in baseball. And had never had an injury problem before.

answer to my question
for last year:
Pos Mean
C 86
1B 115
2B 96
3B 109
SS 94
RF 111
CF 97
LF 107
so…
c
100 laird is well above average
116 salty is (and it surely don’t seem like it) outstanding
1b
36 broussard was pathetic
104 shelton is below average, but not disgusting
120 cat is above average (his is total, not just 1b)
2b
121 kinsler is outstanding
3b
127 blalock is well above average
160 vazquez has been friggin awesome
ss
106 young has been above average
LF
100 boggs is below average
cf
162 hamilton is been awesome
rf
119 murphy is a little above average
dh/rf
174 bradley has been outstanding
of course, it’d be nice if this holds up the entire season

Young
I think we have to leave him at SS or bench him in the future (likely in 2010-2011). He doesn’t have the bat for 3B. According to those numbers, he would be below the mean offensively at 3B even now.

Player Pics...
Mench was a Ranger when pictures were taken this year, so they probably haven’t taken one of him in a Jays uni. As for Salty, he didn’t make the squad out of ST, so he might not have been present on picture day, thus they have to revert back to his last picture from picture day with the Braves last year.

Ben Broussard tried to do a Fu Manchu as well, as I recall
But he apparently couldn’t grow it like Cat did.
Blalock was supposed to do it too, but he chickened out, and shaved at the last minute, so we’ll never know what his looked like.

I would buy this as an explanation
if MLB’s photos weren’t all updated.
I just don’t think ESPN cares about having up-to-date photos. Mench didn’t make the major league roster out of spring training either, so I don’t see the differentiation here.
