Got in late

been watching for this half-inning, but wanted to wait until the second game thread to jump in because when the thread gets over 250 comments or so, it takes se4veral minutes to render on my machine. If I start off with a fresh thread, it loads OK.

3-meg DSL

It’s not a loading issue… it’s that it takes forever for firefox to draw the page. I don’t know if it’s a firefox issue or not, though.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm on FireFox

with a slightly slower DSL connection than you. I’m really not having the same problem. It certainly gets slower the close it gets to 500, but only by a few extra seconds.

by trekds9 on May 3, 2008 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Ever since they switched over

It goes slow as hell on mine to. Very annoying

by SaltyGoesYard on May 3, 2008 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

well, thats not a great speed

but yeah it sould be able to load a thread..

how is your computer?

for the record

im on a month old computer and fiber optic 15 meg download. i fear no gameday threads.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

yeah

Gerald Laird is my hero.

by DShep on May 3, 2008 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

That's awesome!!

Too bad I can’t get that in bumf*ck, Texas. Out in the middle of frickin’ nowhere.

by trekds9 on May 3, 2008 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here...

in Atascadero, CA. I’m only on 3-meg DSL because 6-meg isn’t available here… and speed tests show me as only downloading at about 1,725K instead of 3,000.

It is fast enough for me to do the 400K MLB.tv package.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

wow.. I can do the 1200

and just have cable modem. Something is amiss.

Hey, it could be worse...

by HighPlainsGrifter on May 3, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends on your speed package

I should be able to do the 1200 too but then everything else would load kinda slow… I’m just too cheap to pay extra.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

White-trash-cadero!

I have a friend who went to school in SLO. He taught me the alternative name of your town.

By the way, the loading issue doesn’t have to do with Firefox, or at most it’s something with your local installation of the browser (although I’m guessing it’s just your computer that’s having issues). I love Firefox, and it loads long gameday threads no problem here (I have fast computers and internet).

You should try to load the same pages in IE to see whether it’s a browser issue. If IE loads the pages OK (which would surprise me), I’d try to reinstall Firefox.

Good luck!

I grew up in Paso Robles

Of course, now I cover sports for the Atascadero News… mostly the Greyhounds. Funny how a job opening can change things, huh?

800 KB's

on relatively new PC and absolutely no problems

by bigskinny on May 3, 2008 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I built it 3 1/2 years ago

Pentium 4 2.8 GHz, 1 gig ram, Maxtor 7200 RPM SATA drive… dunno if more RAM would help (an upgrade would be expensive since I’ve got a bad RAM slot, so I’d need to replace the DIMMs in the good slots).

Maybe I could try it on firefox on the laptop… it’s got 1.5 gigs of RAM.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Another thing...

individual copies of firefox seem to have their own separate “personalities.”

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

you need more ram

desperately.

for 50 bucks you could significantly improve the general speed of your comp.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

by DShep on May 3, 2008 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

oh

how bout getting a 2 gig card for your working one?

by DShep on May 3, 2008 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I found some for my computer

two gigs of PC3200 at NewEgg for $65 with free shipping… might have to do that.

I found a 2-gig kit at your outpost/fry’s link for $60 but I don’t know the shipping cost.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

whoa

don’t go spending money on RAM just for LSB.

seriously, try it without that ridiculously CPU intensive folidng thing.

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on May 3, 2008 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

OK, just tried it

turning off f@h makes no difference, and IE is a lot faster.

I could try upping the RAM… could I reinstall firefox without losing my bookmarks or (most importantly) my saved passwords?

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

doubt it would help

but you can reinstall without losing those things if you use google browser sync extension http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/

i guess you could up the ram too but you shouldn’t need to. i am running the same system as you

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on May 3, 2008 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

There is an extension

for FF called FEBE (firefox extension backup extension). It’s an extension that backs up extension, but it will also back up an entire profile.

Saved passwords, bookmarks, everything.

by trekds9 on May 3, 2008 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

So I installed that backup thingie

Then I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox… it appears to have kepy my settings without me doing anything. It also has all the wrong icons next to each web page in the bookmarks folder, like before, and it still takes all year to render a long LSB thread, like before.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Holy crap

IE on the laptop… quick like bunnies.

Maybe I do need more RAM in the desktop machine.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Newegg rocks so hard

when I built my machine, Newegg is where I got every last piece of hardware. Cost me half of what the same machine would have been if I bought it from Dell.

Here's one

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Once the finances allow

Actually, since it’s been three years, I’d like to wait until the Western Digital VelociRaptor drives hit the market and upgrade to a motherboard that supports SATA 300, then upgrade the RAM too.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Something else just occurred to me

I run two copies of folding@home on my computer… distributed computing project that uses my spare CPU cycles to study how proteins fold in the human body and sends the data to Stanford. After the game, I’ll try loading up the old game thread without the two instances of f@h running to see if it’s any better.

by Inkara1 on May 3, 2008 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Client-side Issues

The new SB2.0 added some client-side Javascript for the instant page refresh, so if you’re having slow downs then the problem is most likely that your computer is just slow. This could be because of an old processor, a lack of RAM, or a slow HD.

by rcreative on May 4, 2008 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

yep...

If I view one of these threads on my iPhone, it will eventually shut down my data connection completely and I have to reboot the phone to recover.

To get back to

the Young to 200 hits post in the last thread.

he was at 29 hits after 30 hits (pretty sure on that). Now he is at 36 hits through 30 games. The offense also looks much better so Young is going to be getting more PAs. And on top of that, you have to pitch to him more with Bradley and Hamilton behind him instead of just Tex.

by Gdawg on May 3, 2008 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

Young

If he has 36 hits through his first 30 games and he goes on to play 158 games, he will wind up with 190 hits.

by Randy Richardson on May 3, 2008 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

If he continues hitting like he has now

then yes. But I don’t think Young has hit his best yet. He is generally the best during June and July and is currently hitting his lowest BA since 2002. I don’t think its crazy to think Young will raise his BA around .315 like he has hit at these past 4 years if not better.

by Gdawg on May 3, 2008 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Young

I’m one of his biggest supporters, I just think it will be difficult for him to get to 200 hits if he continues taking walks at this pace (and I’d rather he keep taking the walks).

by Randy Richardson on May 3, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

he can keep taking walks

but after seeing him get to 200 last season, I’m not putting it past him to do it again just because he is taking too many walks. Last season, he wasn’t hitting at all and that was why I doubted him, having too good of an eye won’t make me doubt him.

by Gdawg on May 3, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Murray 6.1 IP, 6 Hits, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB’s 3 K’s

Pretty close so far

couple more Ks

and a hit would be fine for me though your IP can’t be true if that’s the case. Still an amazingly close prediction

What do you think Salty's reason for the one knee squat?

Give the pitcher a better target? More comfortable? Cause he’s very inconsistent in doing it. Doesn’t really seem to be a pattern.

And isn’t that something Pudge does if I’m remember correctly?

by slimshadty12 on May 3, 2008 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

it's the old Tony Peña squat...

...did it all the time with the BoSox

by oc on May 3, 2008 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

it was a low pitch. It may be his way of slappin the ground with his glove.

by oc on May 3, 2008 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

the best part about this win...

...is A.J. Murray.

when your team is forced into calling up two minor-leaguers for consecutive spot-starts… you’d be happy to walk away with one win. now, we have a chance for two.

and don’t look now. but our three most consistant starters take the hill in Seattle.

if the pitching holds up, we have a chance to play some good consistant baseball on this trip.

I am impressed with Salty.

I think he got he a hit today but the important part but his defense and calling the game were impressive. Not only Salty but Laird has been good the last few games calling the game. Salty has his targets down in the zone most of the time which will never hurt a pitcher.

I need to start working on my vertical and working out again. I do a bunch of free weight stuff but that doesn’t really work that well.

What are the best exercises to do with weights? Is bench overrated,? Seems like people concentrate on that way to much…

Say your sorry to Ron Washington

by miles on May 4, 2008 2:20 AM CDT up reply actions

wow I had no idea you were soooo tall..

Miley is going to look like a midget next to you. Well at your height and age it’s going to be hard to put on weight until your metabolism slows down. But yes stick to the free weights and do the power movements to add strenght and size – although the size will be a slow increase until you stop growing. By “power movements” I mean..

chest- bench press
shoulders-shoulder press
legs- squats
back- pull ups
biceps- straight bar curls
triceps- close grip bench press or dips

Doing like 5 sets of these twice a week is a good start and then you can compliment it with other things as you get stronger. I’d do like 6 to 8 reps. on each exercise, if you can do more it’s time to increase the weight and before you know it you’ll be a lean mean fighting machine.
