OT: Wrigley Experience
So...I'm headed to Chicago in late July-Early August for a quick vacation. The sad-sack Pirates will be in town, and I was hoping to get a little advice from any Wrigley veterans.
1) Any rec's on seat location? Obviously the bleachers are where the party is, but is it worth it to miss the game in a drunken stupor?
2) Should I go ahead and grab tickets now or wait until closer to gameday and try to snag 'em from someone trying to dump his seats to the Paul Maholm-Jason Marquis showdown?
Obviously, I'll be spending a few hours at Murphy's. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wrigley
I was actually up there a few weekends ago and the pirates were actually in town. I would recommend LF bleachers. Get there EARLY. Like right when the gates open. You paid for the tickets and part of that price is in the atmosphere. You really wont get hammered during the game because you will naturally only drink 3 beers or so an hour. This is because you wont want to get up wait in the line and miss the game. Grab two at a time, that is all they will sell you at a time. They have just instituted a no cussing rule in the bleachers which sucks but oh well i guess. Check stubhub and see what the tickets are. Also, check craigslist. Anything under 75 per is a really good deal IMO. The face value during the summer is 36. Grab seats first, make sure it is saved and then go grab a brat and a beer. Go up the stairs and to your right. Anymore questions? It is an awesome awesome experience.
I did a tour of parks in 2004...
...that included Wrigley. I purchased all of my tickets in advance and bought “best available” seats for the five stadiums I went to (both Chicago stadiums, Milwaukee, Kansas City and old St. Louis). By far, the worst seat I got was at Wrigley, so you’ll probably want to try and get tickets ASAP if you’re trying to get close to face value. I’ve never been one to buy scalper seats, so I don’t know how much luck you’d have – I’m pretty sure the stadium is close to a sell out on most days.
Before the game I wandered around the neighborhood for about an hour and a half – the park itself is really tiny from the outside and really cramped on the inside. Before the game, you’ll see a ton of people beyond the left field wall looking for BP homeruns. There are tons of baseball shops around the area (much like Fenway if you’ve ever been there). Overall, it was one of the best ballpark experiences of my life – the crowd is awesome, the park is really cool (although it’s a dump by today’s standards), and it’s just a really fun place to watch a game (even if you’re subjected to crappy NL baseball).

I had a lot of luck
finding scalpers. Honestly, tickets a week out were a lot more than tickets 24 hours out. A difference of about 40 bucks per. The guy I bought them from said he buys a bunch every year and then marks them up 50% on games like the pirates, etc to get a guaranteed profit. And then marks them up 100%-200% against the cards, white sox and a few other teams. Where did you end up sitting?

I don't recall the exact location, but...
...I think I was in or around Section 230 on the first base side, which really wasn’t a bad seat. I’m an admitted ticket snob though, so anything outside of the baselines and above the lowest section ticks me off…
I’d probably have more luck if I did buy from scalpers, but I’m a “planner,” so I always buy tickets in advance, which probably costs me some additional coin in the long run.

Yeah,
I’m a huge believer in buying tickets from scalpers. The odd thing is that I have bought tickets for under face about as often as I have for over face.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
Yeah I ended up getting mine
for 50 bucks when face value was 36. I was lucky in that I was visiting a friend up there and she lived in Wrigleyville. What other ballparks have you been to?

Last minute
tix from scalpers=less than face value, and usually damn good seats.
I have done that for many concerts over the years & Ranger games.
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?
I've done numerous
“stadium tours”. I have found that getting tickets from scalpers beats the hell out of buying them months in advance and getting crappy seats.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
It has been a while since I've been there
But there were always plenty of tickets to be had from scalpers right in front of the park. You can get some really good deals right before game time, although be wary that some of those scalpers are not above shadiness. Beware of the ol’ switcheroo & skidaddldoo.
Anywhere on Waveland is nice. But you gotta get there early.
Obviously, you want to go to a day game. Weekday day games are best.
If you want to do something touristy, go to Mother’s (where they filmed About Last Night). And Buddy Guy has a cool blues club on the South Side. It is not in the bad part of the South Side, though.
I just realized most of my suggestions were kind of obvious. If they were, my apolgies.

Similiar, but different question.
I’m going to New York next month for some Yankees/Mets/Concerts. I’m staying in Midtown Manhattan. I already have my tickets for the games but was curious to see if anyone had any hot spots I should check out.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

went there the week before last..
got my tickets from somone right outside the gate for face value, but he wasn’t a scalper. There were plenty around however. I ended up sitting in the LF corner, right by the foul pole (not bleachers) and had a blast. I was in the middle of a group of guys that knew the beer vendors by name, etc. and everyone around was friendly when they found out I wasn’t a local.
If you aren’t taking public transit to the game, park at their remote shuttle lot on the DeVry campus. It save me much time and $$ and was very easy in and out.

I was there about time that time too
Who were they playing when you went?

Thanks
Appreciate all the insight…I’ll probably try to find a scalper for Friday’s day game
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
buy standing room only seats
day of the game – go down the street, grab a 32 oz. soda from a 7-11 type store, buy a fifth of jack daniels, pour the latter into the former, walk right in and have yourself a blast. by the 5th inning, you can grab a seat right behind home plate…
at least that’s how it worked for me 2 years ago…

Did anyone else think, just for a split second when they saw this diary on the front page, that it was about gum, and think how odd that there was a diary about gum on LSB?
