The Dayton Moore Game

LSB favorite Joe Posanski offers this  interesting way to evaluate your team talent.

------------------------------------

OK, so Royals general manager Dayton Moore showed me this fun little game you can play with your team. It begins with a scouting question: How many 60 tools does your team have?

20 — Sucks beyond belief. Travis Hafner’s defense would be a 20. Barely knows which glove goes on which hand. Tony Pena Jr. is a 20 hitter. Bengie Molina is a 20 runner. Jason Kendall has 20 power. Andie McDowell is a 20 actress. Carrottop is a 20 comedian. Roger Clemens is a 20 liar. And so on.
30 — Just plain sucks. Johnny Damon’s arm might be a 30. It’s a 20 on the strength scale — it’s ASTONISHING how weak his arm is — but I’d say it’s a 30 overall because he is usually accurate with it at least.
40 — Doesn’t suck, but is still a tick below average. I’d say Kevin Youkilis is a 40 runner. Maybe Jermaine Dye. Maybe someone in between them.
50 — Exactly major league average. In 2005, Brandon Inge had almost the perfect 50 season. He hit .261/.330/.419 with 16 home runs, he stole seven bases and was caught six times, he had a .957 fielding percentage which was precisely the league average, and so on.
60 — All-Star Level. Placido Polanco is probably a 60 hitter. I think that Carlos Beltran — when healthy and engaged — has 60 power and 60 speed.
70 — Above All-Star Level. This is the superstar category. Lance Berkman has 70 power. Torii Hunter is (or certainly was — I don’t know if he’s fallen off at all) a 70 center fielder. Jose Reyes has 70 speed.
80 — Superhuman. There are scouts that just won’t give the 80 to anyone. An 80 would be — Albert Pujols or Ted Williams would be an 80 hitter. Mickey Mantle or Big Head Barry would have 80 power. Cool Papa Bell would be an 80 runner. Roberto may have had the only 80 outfield arm in baseball history (though Ellis Valentine should be heard). Ozzie at short, Mays in center, JB behind the plate are 80 defenders.

----------------------------------------

What's your evaluation for the Rangers as far as the scouting scale is concerned?

Hmm...

Hamilton may have 60’s (or above) in 3 categories: definitely ARM and POWER, but possibly HITTING.

Laird may be a 60 FIELDER (since bunting isn’t a tool, he doesn’t get the 80 he deserves there)

Young was probably once a 60 HITTER, but now probably more of a 50. His THROWING may be 60, offset by a 30 defense.

Bradley may be a 60 HITTER

Kinsler has lots of 50s, in my book (speed, power, hitting), but maybe one of those is a 60. He’s better than Inge, his definition of 60.

by JBImaknee on May 30, 2008 12:14 PM CDT reply actions

based on what we've been

seeing from Kinsler in having a 100% success in stealing
and hearing about Kinsler’s baseball knowledge.

You could probably justify giving him a 60 in base running.

If it is base running

then yeah – he gets a 60. But he isn’t fast like Fast Freddie Guzman is/was. He’s just a really smart base runner who knows when to run. I don’t know if that counts in the scouting of a tool…

by JBImaknee on May 30, 2008 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

fair enough

I wasn’t really thinking in terms of a “tool”

it's pretty obvious that is the subject of this whole evaluation system though

so my mistake.

Something interesting about steals

a minor leaguer told they do something that I didn’t know about. In spring training they work on getting a time on how long a pitcher takes to bring it to the plate and compare it to whether you were successful or not. He said after you get your time, his was 1.3 seconds, a coach takes a stopwatch in the first inning and figures out how long the opposing pitcher is taking to pop the mitt, and if its over 1.3 he’s gets the green light.

Seems like Kinslers got something working similar.

by corbsclinton on May 30, 2008 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

depending on how you score it

Kinsler is probably a 60’s basestealer but just straight out speed he’s more like a 58

Also there needs to be more of a middle ground Between just League Avg. and then All-Star there should be an above avg. section and maybe not a superhuman one, Just MO

Really, really nice guy

Lived right by my college and I’d often see him around. He was always signing autographs and posing for pics with kids while telling them jokes and stuff.

God knows who would want his autograph, but at least he isn’t a dick. That has to count for something.

I don’t like Carrot Top or anything, but I never got all the hate.

Carrot Top sucks, but I always thought he sucked in a benign kind of way, like the way roller hockey sucks or the way Coldplay sucks.

Guys like Carlos Mencia are aggressively unfunny and should be killed.

Hitting is a tough tool to evaluate,

since hitting a ball is a tough skill but just hitting the ball doesn’t necessarily make a player productive.

MY is a 60 hitter, but he’s not always all that productive of a 60 hitter because his power and on-base skills are 45s.

by rooster on May 30, 2008 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

To me all aspects of hitting...

...should be lumped together for this evaluation. Hitting for average, for power, and for getting on base. Taking that into consideration he would have to rate closer to 50 (league average) than 60 (all-star level).

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Couldn't agree more...

...I have to hear enough of that crap on the TV in the locker room at my health club. It’s constantly tuned to CNN or Fox News.

Beating.

Of the highest order.

It's pretty alarming a lot of the time

to catch a TV in a gym, bar, or restaurant, tuned to a cable news station.

These days, the cable news you watch often hints toward your views.

Throw on local news, or sports.

I don't mean to sound like I don't know what's going on

I do, but I’m just not a guy that sits in front of the news every day. I mean, why would you? High gas prices, high food prices, Barack vs. Hallary… blech. Yes, keeping up with the news is a beating. Doesn’t mean I don’t do it, though.

But no, I don’t sit and watch FOX news or MSNBC or anything.

Why would you?

Because keeping up with the news helps you understand why/how these things are happening and help make informed decisions about the future. Being a citizen ought to be at least as important to you as being a baseball fan.

Laird - arm
Cat - hitting
Young - hitting
Boggs - defense (for a COF)
Hamilton - hitting, hitting for power, arm, defense (for a COF)
Bradley - hitting
