Keith Law mock draft
Keith Law has a mock draft up, and has this on the Rangers at #11:
11. Texas -- Christian Friedrich, LHP, Eastern Kentucky
Reports have Nolan Ryan going to see TCU closer Andrew Cashner recently, but I hope he realizes the folly of taking a college reliever this high with quality starters left on the board. Ethan Martin's first landing spots are here and perhaps Houston.
Law's top 75 can be found here...

No...
The rest of his picks cannot be seen there because ESPN hates me and everyone else. Except for the rich kids with “insider” accounts. Soashes.
What happened to my old signature?
If Ryan is the decision maker...
I just get the feeling that the Rangers are going to go with Cashner. Ryan has ties with TCU because I believe that Reid Ryan went there. Also, there may be some mounting concern over whether CJ can handle the closer’s role. And with the surprising success of the team this year perhaps they think a fast moving college closer could help the team to win the West as early as next year. Just thinking…
if that is the case
there is a kid down in AA ball named Diamond who can probably come on quicker than Cashner.
Do you think
they trust the ability of diamond to close or even stay healthy? Personally, I think Diamond will be a good bullpen arm as well. I just really hope the Rangers dont draft Cashner. Not saying he is going to be a bad player but I think they can get more value at 11. Im crossing my fingers for Hosmer.

The problem is, of course
that this draft is SO deep in College relievers, that I’m not sure what the difference is between Cashner and someone like Zach Stewart (who actually commands his pitches) or from the myriad of other good to awesome college relievers that might be had in round 2 or 3.
Yeah, but
what the hell do I want with a bunch of magazines, especially if it comes from ESPN?
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
Discount mags?
Like those 3 packs you get from KT Video?
I’m so confused….
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?
Huh?
Where’d you see that price?
As much as I hate ESPN I’d prolly do it for 10 bucks just for the baseball coverage, but when I went over to check it out it says a year is 39.95.
Hmmm… I looked at it a little more. I’m guessing you bought a subscription to ESPN the Magazine for cheap, then used that to “Activate your free insider account”. Am I right?

i did it earlier this year
i believe it was 10.99. Last year i did the same thing and it was 2.99 for the entire year.
yes, you are right. just read the 2nd part of your reply. I bought a subscription for dirt cheap and it comes with a year free of ESPN insider.
I just leech off of my dad's ESPN Mag subscription.
The only reasons to have an insider account are really Law, Rob Neyer and K.C. Joyner.
Occasionally there’s NFL draft and college basketball stuff of interest.
friedrich
i’d feel a lot better about picking him than i would cashner, but i kind of like the HS arms

it seems like most drafts
we are out of the top class of players every time. Let’s say they are 11 solid picks in the draft, we draft 12 or there is a great top 16 in a draft, we draft 17th.
Boooo.
Draft
the rangers havent been sucking enough to really rebuild through the elite draft talent

Why?
I watched a couple videos of him and found myself yawning.
He seems like maybe a good 3/4 with his stuff.
I don’t see the point.

i think he is pick number 25-35
in most drafts. teams are really going to reach for college pitching this year.
Hopefully not us
I’d rather see us take Yonder or Brett Wallace if none of the big guns falls, or Martin or Cole if we like their arms better.
I don’t want a mediocre college arm just cause they’re “closer”.

i’m really coming around on all the guys you just mentioned if your boy hosmer doesnt fall or smoak

we are of like minds
"For the record, I did not and do not like the Volquez trade, even though Hamilton is awesome and our best player and I think he’s going to be one of the best players in baseball." philikid3
That would really blow
if matusz fell to the astros at 10. I have cautiously been building up hope that crow and not hosmer will drop. Not that I dont want hosmer, but it would be nice to have a top pitcher drop to us and actually be picked.
Matusz has been rated better by just about everyone with slightly worse stuff than crow however he has better control and is left handed. Best thing we could hope for is that he slides to us other than alvarez which wont happen.
Who do you want in the 2nd?
Im pulling for isaac galloway hs of, once considered to be among the top players this time last year or tim murphy lhp, who has struggled a bit this year.
Also if he is there, when do you think is the time to pull the trigger on scheppers? Is the 2nd round too early if he is there?
scheppers will want
first round money. i have a feeling he slides quite a bit, and some team pops him in rounds 5-10 and hopes to moneywhip him.
I have read
that teams have serious concerns about his arm, and it is one of those things where once a guy starts falling, it gets harder and harder to draft him because the risk of not signing him gets higher and higher.
It's not serious concerns
as much as teams don’t know what the heck is wrong with him yet. The initail diagnosis was apparently incorrect.

also, he mentions my boy Weatherford, who i am hoping is there in the second round. I just don’t understand why he is not the highest rated reliever in the draft…
Friedrich
he would be my pick if I were GM.
"Then, like a**holes, they took it back." -Jeff of Lookout Landing after Hamilton's 9th inning HR on April 1st.
Hopefully GM of a team
that picks in the mid to late 1st round. Friedrich seems like a reach at #11.
OT:
Just watching a segment on ESPN featuring Trey Wingo, Mike Golic, and Michael Smith
Smith was ripping on Golic for forgetting his wedding anniversary. Smith then went on to mention his own anniversary date, showing what a great husband (lame move) he apparently is. I swear to you, Mike Golic just told him to “Stop sucking…” and was SO close to saying “dick.”
In the brief moment after he said “sucking…” I was bracing myself to watch a live on-air blooper.
I’m really disappointed it didn’t happen. I’m 25.
Not sure what the joke is...
but I meant “I’m 25” to mean it’s pretty sad for me to find entertainment in that.
I don't like Friedrich
He’s like a midget-s apartment-no ceiling.
I’d much rather take the BPA (catchers notwithstanding), and he’s not that at all.
If Aaron Hicks is there, what’s the general group feeling on him?
Why do you say he has no ceiling?
I’ve read reports he doesn’t have the same ceiling as Matusz, but Matusz is the the top pitching prospect in the draft. Friedrich was also the fourth best prospect in the Cape Cod league.
“He’s the closest to the big leagues of anyone in this league,” Chatham manager John Schiffner said. “That 12-6 curveball is just deadly. It’s like Rich Hill’s—you just can’t hit it. And his 89-92 is fine, especially with that curveball.”
That doesn't
really say much other than that he’s more advanced than the other pitchers there. He has no cieling because he has no stuff. His curveball is nice, but it’s not like he has an awesome change or another secondary change that makes up for his high 80s fastball.
89-92 ... touches 94
I’d call it low 90’s, from a lefty, and he has good deception in his delivery. His scouting report leads one to believe he has a little more than two pitches.
he has been using his slider more than he has in the past, and it has become a weapon at 80-82 mph. He also has a decent changeup that he’ll need to incorporate more often in pro ball.
A deceptive lefty with a four pitch mix. I feel the Rangers could do a lot worse with the pick.
There's a difference
between being able to throw it in theory and being an effective pitch in game. The slider and the changeup aren’t really effective pitches, he works off of the fastball and the curve. And no, I’ve never seen him go as high as 94, heck, I’ve rarely seen Matsuz work that high.
Considering that he’s still just throwing 2 or 3 changeups per start, the fact that he’s never faced advanced hitters and the fact that there’s little movement on his fastball, what are you left with exactly? Barry Zito circa 2007?

First mention of Ethan Martin going to the Rangers
It’s about time. Watch out for that kid.
Also, I’m pretty certain that Cashner would be Reed-ed (i.e. college closer becomes professional starter).
Reed isn't that great a prospect though.
No one is going to say he’s in our top ten pitchers, so I’m not really enamored of that option.
Dude
Reed was a third round pick last year. He pitched in Frisco before Tommy Hunter and before Andrew Laughter. Reed tops the list of underrated Rangers pitching prospects right now. No question.

Whoa there killer
A spot start doesn’t necessarily mean he is better than either of those two. It just so happened his schedule coincided with that spot start so he got the call. He pitched great but then was right back down. And I think there are probably a couple other pitchers who are above him on the underrated list but hes a nice prospect don’t get me wrong.
