Gabbard down, Tejeda up, Nippert clears waivers
The DMN Rangers blog reports that Kason Gabbard has been optioned to AAA and Robinson Tejeda is returning to Texas. No word yet on if he's in the bullpen or taking Gabbard's rotation slot.
Dustin Nippert has been activated from the disabled list, cleared waivers, and has been outrighted to Oklahoma. This means we now have 39 players on the 40 man roster (since Tejeda has been added), although Thomas Diamond will likely be activated from the 60 day d.l. and optioned before too long, which will bring the number to 40.
In addition, Franklyn German has opted for free agency, rather than accepting the outright assignment to AAA.
UPDATE -- T.R. Sullivan says Mathis stays in the rotation, Tejeda goes to the pen.

Nah
I’d be fairly content if he turned out to be a good, consistent long man.

Tejeda's last appearance was May 24th
It would seem like a long wait if he just waiting for Gabbard’s spot. Maybe it is one of those here as a bullpen arm maybe used as a starter type situations.

Gabbard to AAA
I think that is the right move. He really needs to work on simply getting his stuff over the plate, which means he might get hit hard a couple of times. No need for the big league team for forfeit those games.

I'd rather Tejeda start
but hopefully he’ll throw strikes and get that opportunity down the road. Either way let’s see what he’s got and if he’s really learned anything in the last couple of months.

wow.
it’d be nice if he was catching fire…and he keeps it.
can you imagine a bullpen with CJ, Benoit, Francisco, dominant Tejeda with control, the Electrician, Wes Littleton and maybe Tom Diamond for the next couple of years? ok, maybe keep Diamond as a starter in AA/AAA, and insert Every Day Eddie for this year and then Rupe down the road asserts himself…

LHP Lenny DiNardo
Apparently OAK is designating him for assignment. i might take a flyer on him, as he has a decent lefty arm and could be useful in the bullpen.

The Oakland As
outdoes us by bringing up 4 members of their AAA team
Top prospect Carlos Gonzalez, former top prospect Travis Buck, side-armer Brad Zeigler and reliever/giver of grand slams Kiko Calero.

anybody notice Nelson Cruz
numbers in AAAA? 15 HR, 14 SB, 43 runs, 41 RBI, .335/.450/.695 for a whopping 1.145 OPS? Any chance he’s learning patience at the plate with that high OBP and he gets called up to make an impact this year, or are we just going to let him play as a career AAAA-er?
a few others I’m surprised and/or satisfied with:
Mayberry – 4 HR, 12 R, 16 RBI .317/.363/.538 for .901 OPS is encouraging
Arias – 0 HR but 22 R, 15 RBI .292/.317/.360 for a depressing .678 OPS has me excited about the average and run production and hoping with time he can learn how to get on base more…I guess he has NO power what-so-ever though
Teagarden – 2 HR, 11 R, 8 RBI .277/.427/.431 for an .838 OPS – he’s holding his own
Davis with a HR in 4 games…
Gold with 9 HR, 27 R, 38 RBI – poor average but decent OBP in spite of it
AJ Murray with 2 complete games already
Kometani and Madrigal a pretty nice setup/closer combination

Kometani
Im really scared about this guy. He will have to be protected this winter but I don’t see room for him. I think he could be a nice bullpen arm especially on the cheap but I think he will get picked in the rule V by someone. I guess I better get used to it. In the coming years we will probably have alot of fringe guys like this that we lose because of more and more talented prospects in our system

So then you've noticed Bourbon
is hitting a nice and sexy .328/.377/.432 with 19 steals while playing stellar CF defense?
I saw a picture of him online and it had a little word bubble coming up from him that said, “Suck it, Brian Thomas!” Well, okay, that’s a lie. There was no word bubble. But the look on his face, the look on his face said “Suck it, Brian Thomas!” Or at least it seemed to. It did. I swear.
Why would I lie?

The burden of proof
is on the prosecution, good sir.
Tomato Sauce Thomas has been ripping my client for being horrible at everything baseball related. If he wants to try to prove Bourbon is terrible at defense, he can go ahead and try. But everything I’ve heard of his defense this year has been positive.

Perhaps
Though I’d argue that case would result in “Recognizing When a Pitcher Has Figured it Out Trumps All!!!”
There was plenty of crappiness on the 40 at the time we cut the Duke loose.
Making every decision with the 40 as the top priority just because you f’d up and cut the wrong guy lose doesn’t make much sense, imo.
I know that’s not what you were implying or anything, but still.

Yah.
22 year olds from major college conferences “murdering” high A pitching to the tune of 809. It dosn’t get much sexier than that, folks.
Ooh.
I hereby rescind my original prediction: I, B. Carter Thomas, am wholeheartedly and dutifully confident that Don Julio could manage the night shift peep show janitorial duties sans assistance.
I stand humbly corrected.

Borbon
BP has him with a MLE EQA of .234 right now.
For a 22 year old plus defensive CF’er taken with the 35th pick of the draft last year, that’s not bad.

I think he’s hitting better this year than his Junior year of college, so at least he’s improving. And I also think he already has more walks.

Agreed
If he can cut down on the walks he’ll be fine. (well fine as a back of the rotation starter)

Gabbard's command
I think it would have worked itself out if left alone a little while longer, so I’m not too keen on sending him down, but it’s not the end of the world. I did want to see Tejeda again though and I agree with starting him off in relief. The musical chairs of pitching go on…
by tangiers on May 30, 2008 6:30 PM CDT 0 recs
I'm fine with this move
I’m glad we’ll get to see Tejeda. It makes sense that he’s not in the rotation however, considering the Rangers want to convert him to a reliever. At least they’re sticking to their guns on that (although admittedly I wouldn’t mind seeing him start either).
I would have rather seen Murray than Mathis in the rotation, but I suppose we’ve played enough musical roster spots for the time being.
As for Gabbard, I might have been willing to give him one more start to pull it together, but he has been horrible this past month, and he hasn’t been giving us enough innings to justify keeping him up here. He was loosing us ballgames and taxing the bullpen. As DShep said above though, I don’t expect Gabbard to be down too long if he performs well in OKC.

I like the move...
Kason needs to start throwing strikes. Figure that shit out at AAA. It also sends a message if you walk as many hitters sas he has the Rangers won’t just keep handing you the ball every 5th day.
Tejeda deserves another shot (as does Cruz). You’ve got about a month or so to show you can pitch at this level Robbie. The leash will be short, in this probably your last shot. At least with the Rangers.

will, I hope, find a pitching coach, in Hawkins. Just needs to have enough smarts to pay attention.
