Jennings out for the season

From the S-T, Jason Jennings is done for the season, after undergoing surgery on his right flexor tendon.

Bad break for the Rangers, and for Jennings, whom I thought was a solid bargain-basement signing this offseason.

READY TO CONTRIBUTE?

So we sign Jennings because he is ready to contribute, but we pass on Colon because he is along ways from helping. So now Jennings goes 0-5 and done for the year. While Bartolo 3 years removes from being the Cy Young winner is 2-0 and sporting a 2.25 era for the BoSox. Who had the greater upside? What a great move by our scouts. Can we please get over 500 tonight.

I wanted Colon also but...

All the reports said Jennings was the best value and Colon had lost velocity. Oh well we have sidney Pontoon who is actually pitching well.

Colon

The Cy Young season is the only good one he’s had in the last four. And he’s 35 years old. I’ll take the younger guy with the better track record of recent performance.

I don't see how...

...releasing McCarthy would be something to be considered.

by Adam J. Morris on May 31, 2008 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unlike Jason Jennings

Brandon McCarthy is only 24 years of age, and he is under contract at a relatively cheap price for the next few years. I don’t really see how his name would enter into a conversation about releasing Jason Jennings.

he could not

that is just a downright stupid comment.

That's kind of a stupid thing to say

In 20/20 hindsight, the McCarthy trade might seem like a bust right now, but at the time, it was a fair swap of two differrent organization’s #1 pitching prospects. People around here like to hate the trade because they where attatched to John Danks, but if you look at the fundimental reasons of why it was made, when it was made, it was an even trade. Not a bad trade, not a good trade, just an even one. One side just got a little unlucky thanks to the injury bug, which may or may not have something to do with the fact that they let their pitcher pitch through a stress fracture for a good part of last season.

To talk about releasing McCarthy (who, as pointed out above, is still fairly young, and still under contract) just because he’s on the DL and you don’t like the trade is stupid.

Oh Snap. Excellent point.

JD. What a dumbass.

Who couldn’t see the McCarthy injury coming?

That’s in the Real Baseball Man Operator’s Manual, Chapter 2, pg. 3: Never trade for a young, cheap, highly regarded, statistically dominant, injury free pitcher when you can easily soothsee into the near future that he will be spend an unfortunate amount of time on the DL for non-prexisting health issues.

Way to go, Boy Blunder!

40-man

Was he already on the 60-day DL, or does this clear a spot?

by hightowersmith on May 31, 2008 5:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

At some point...

...he’ll be moved to the 60 day d.l., when they need a roster spot.

by Adam J. Morris on May 31, 2008 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

Why not release him? He’s only under contract for this year, and either way we’ll be paying him, so…

I don't know

Just because, I guess. Teams don’t usually do that. I imagine if you flat release a guy who is under contract and injured, you run into possible grievance issues, since the player can’t then use team facilities to rehabilitate, etc.

Send that in to T.R. or Evan Grant…it is a good question for one of their mailbags.

Good idea...

I’ll have to remember to do that.

i guess

it’d send a negative message to minor league free agents/”reclamation projects” in the future.

Temptation Removed

Bummer for him. I would have to think he’ll take an NRI next season…he does owe the team, huh?

...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

by Rodney on May 31, 2008 5:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back here on a minor league deal in 2009.

by Adam J. Morris on May 31, 2008 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good

Hurley one step closer, where he should be.

by Longhorn on May 31, 2008 5:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

How exactly?

I don’t think this puts Hurley any closer to the big leagues than before. Jason Jennings was not going to block Eric Hurley no matter how healthy he was or how good he was pitching. Its all on Hurley how fast he makes it to the big leagues. Once he gets under control in AAA and is ready the Rangers will make room for the guy.

by bigsteve on May 31, 2008 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

at this point the only one blocking Hurley is Hurley. If he continues to pitch like he has in his last 3/4 starts he will be up soon. If not he will stay at AAA. He really does contol his own time table imo.

Oh well

The Rangers are 1 for 3 in the department of reclamation projects this season. Let’s just put him on the 60-day DL and move on.

Who's the one?

Guardado, Ponson or Bradley?

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 31, 2008 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're right

I guess I was kind of optimistic about Guardado and Bradley that I didn’t see them as reclamation projects. I was actually thinking of Ponson, Jennings and Patterson.
In that case, they’re 3 for 5. Not bad.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

The ramifications this move will have in terms of the 40 are awesome.

So...

Who gets called up? I guess Ponson/Mathis will fill out the rotation. As for the positions, everything seems to be set in stone. Sure, Shelton and Cat are only filling in until Blalock recovers. 3B is less than desirable with Vazquez and Metcalf, but there is really nobody in the minors who could do a better job. If the Rangers are thinking about calling up (actually purchasing the contract of) Cruz, I would much rather see Boggs, Murphy, and Hamilton play on a regular basis in the OF.

Obviously, I am missing something. Is there anybody who could be called up now that have a positive impact on the team? Or, does the flexibility of the 40 come into play later in the season when some of the players in the minors could be called upon?

by Excel Hearts Choi on May 31, 2008 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would tend to guess

That the Rangers will just enjoy their newfound roster flexibilty for awhile, until it comes time to use it.

by BlackHawk125 on May 31, 2008 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nobody has to be called up

He was on the DL. What this will do is open a spot on the 40 man for later in the year for a Nellie Cruz last shot or an Eric Hurley promotion or JMJ possibly. But right now there won’t be any ML roster moves because our 25 man roster is full

by bigsteve on May 31, 2008 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if guys like him to go to the minor leagues and spread some tips and encouragement. Something for the millions he is getting.
