is alan embree
chewing. ususally ballplayers are hard core dip. but it seems like hes got some chew in…odd
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
The one thing
That scorches me more than anything else could is when a reliever comes in and goes ball 1, ball 2, ball 3. Infuriating!

But not play the field
If it was the 9th inning I could see him hitting but now he would have to play the field for 2 innings and I don’t think he could do that
Reply to rentz from previous thread
“how is it the rangers ALWAYS make rookie pitchers look like cy freakin young?”
The guy had the 8th lowest ERA in the league coming into today so its not just the Rangers that he has been good against
how is it the rangers ALWAYS make rookie pitchers look like cy freakin young?
Just seems that way. A’s fans are asking themselves the same thing after facing AJ Murray last night.
vazquez really really doesnt need to bat against a lefty
in this situation.
cant kinsler hit and then be subbed out?
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Actually
Now that I think about it, he has to hit.
Kinsler is your only backup IF. If he can’t play in the field, you can’t hit for Vazquez.
by Adam J. Morris on May 4, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Does anyone here really know how gimpy he is?
Is it worth risking aggravating a hamstring to play him here?

Don't know
If his problem “is not serious” as the Rangers keep insisting, I would think he could gut it out.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions
well he said he thought he would play tomorrow
obviously its already happened though so whatever. not like im saying fire RW over it.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Kinsler's only
defensive ability is his range. He’s going to be absolutely horrible on a bad hammy.
Seriously, it’s not going to happen.
Yep
Exactly. There is no reason he couldn’t stand out there for one inning. The difference between Salty and Vasquez in that situation is incredible.
--Brian
162 game season
Do you want to risk putting an already injured player in the field and risk a long DL stint over 1 game in early may? No you let it ride and go with a healthy Kinsler in another day or two and let Vasquez play right now
Risk
I’d take the risk. Alternatively, I bet Laird could play 2nd for an inning.
--Brian
LOL!

by SarasotaRanger on May 4, 2008 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Well then you are dumb
You don’t risk putting one of your best players out in the field injured for one game in early May. If its September and a playoff race maybe but not now.
Kinsler
He isn’t that injured. He has been a late scratch the last 2 days.
--Brian
Kinsler
The A’s announcers said his name was in the starting lineup. He obviously isn’t that injured.
--Brian
Based on the info we have been given
He should be able to play the field for an inning or two.
The only question is if that information is true or not. But based on what we know, I would agree with you.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Based on the fact that it's May 4th
that he’s a player with an injury history and that 2B is a pretty intense position, I’d say you’re both retarded.

Relieve pitchers named Frank who pitches for the Rangers cannot throw strikes on their first 4 pitches
It has been scientifically proven
Why do we have two identical pitchers in our bullpen?
Hefty hard throwing Dominicans that can’t throw strikes.

Good series overall
bad end. It’ll happen sometimes, they gave us the first one, we gave them the last one.
This bullpen is two arms away from being great.
Oh Laird....
I remembe the good old days, when everybody was wanting to kill Barajas because we had you in the wings.
Now the tides have turned, and I want you dead as well.
i commend laird for trying to draw the walk
but its ridiculous that he got that at bat. completely ridiculous.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Yeah
But Salty is your better bet for the gametying homer. Laird has been doing better, because he has to fight for playing time, but he should not have gotten that AB, whether it was Salty, Kinsler or Broussard who pinch hit.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Does it strike anyone else as odd
That you absolutely despise Broussard yet are calling for him to pinch hit at the end of the game?
He can hit a home run every now and then
Got a better chance than Laird.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Too soon
We are not ready for logic just yet
oh yeah, not wanting laird v a righty with the game on the line
is totally illogical.
please.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
So what?
Its righty righty. the fact that is 754 ops v righties this year is 120 points above his 3 year average should tell you something.
salty a switch hitter obviously, and he was .796 last year and 8 something in his few at bats this year. and he just flat out has more power in a situation where a HR ties the game.
maybe not ben broussard over him since ben is in such a bad slump, but salty at least. or catalanotto.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Thing is
Everybody bitches when the manager “over-manages” by constantly playing the percentages.
I say sometimes you have to let the guy with the hot hand shoot the ball.
Salty or Kinsler with a cold hand
Is better than Gerald Laird with a flaming duraflame log in his hand.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions
You really think that?
What has Salty shown to deserve that praise?
I don’t doubt that he has infinitely more offensive talent, but his youth and inexperience at this level certainly don’t fill me with confidence that he’s going to go deep pinch-hitting at the end of a game.
And what fills you with confidence that Gerald Laird will?
In that situation, you go with your best hitter. Gerald Laird is not your best hitter.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Dude
That is the most idiotic thing I have ever seen you say.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions
How
Laird has been hot of late and I am not denying Salty has the more potential or will be the better player down the road. But today, May 4th 2008, I would rather have Gerald Laird at the plate in that situation.
Why?
Shep just posted it below: Salty has a better chance of knocking the ball out of the park.
Wanting Laird at the plate there is stupid. You want the guy who will give you the best chance to win, and both Salty and Ian Kinsler have more power than Laird. Therefore, they should have been at the plate, because they give you a better chance to win.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
salty has reached base 8 times in his 17 plate appearences
with the rangers this year. had around a 900 ops in AAA before coming up, and hit better than laird did last year.
what about that discouraged you?
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Alright look
Im not trying to argue who the better hitter is, has been, or will be. Im merely saying theres no reason to get all up in arms about not pinch hitting for a guy who has been hot lately. Its not like Laird has been in an 0-fer slump for a week. He has been hitting the ball well. Maybe its just me but if a guy is swinging a good hot bat I don’t pinch hit for him unless I have a sure fire better hitter on the bench. And although Salty is the better hitter overall with Laird being on a hot streak I can’t understand the uproar about not taking him out of the game.
Because leaving him in did not give us our best chance to win
But I’m done arguing it. Shep and I see it one way, you see it another, slighty screwed up way.
So let’s just agree to disagree on this before it goes any further.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Holy shit.
You guys just need to let it go. Neither probably would’ve tied the game, so who cares.

its a gameday thread
ill discuss the game as long as i want. as if ANY of these games really matter?
granted, i quit this line of discussion a hour ago as did everyone else…
Gerald Laird is my hero.
fwiw
I completely agree with you. I’m not the huge Laird supporter I once was, but I will still support him in that situation on this day. You have to go with the guy who has been hitting well over the past few days and already has a hit in the game vs. anyone coming off the bench. Not many players can come off the bench in a pinch hit situation against a closer and do anything.
Salty
He has more “potential” than Laird but hasn’t done anything to show he would be better in that situation
Again
Not saying he doesn’t have more potential or won’t be the better player in his career. But today I don’t see why you would PH for Laird.
and for the record
i dont blame this loss on letting laird bat and dont think its that HUGE of a deal. i blame the middle of the lineup. but i do think it was the wrong decision.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Broussard
DFA him tomorrow if you aren’t going to use him in that situation. That is ridiculous.
--Brian
Tomorrow?
dont even let him make it to the parking lot.

let's look at the positives
we’ve had two straight great pitching performances from supposed ‘spot’ starters, we took 2 of 3 against a team that was tied for the division lead when we came in and we’re headed for a four-game series against a div rival that is collapsing..
This loss isn’t the end of the world..
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
we need to jump on
Batista and Washburn tomorrow and Tuesday cause it’s Bedard and King Felix after that.
Only 2 positives from this game
The continued success of Boggs and Duran.
The rest is just useless bullshit on a season that is already in the bag, contention wise.

ok, the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9
i think you are reaching there. i said in particular, not alone.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Ok lets see if I can get a new perspective on Feldman
How old is he, and how many years is he under our control
He is 25
He’s a year younger than Armando Galarraga.
And after this season, he’s got either 4 or 5 more years left under the Rangers’ control.
by Adam J. Morris on May 4, 2008 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions
25
And this is his last season with options. However he won’t be eligible for free agency for another 4 years I believe
Well
I guess that is pretty young.
If he is working on a new delivery then we can give him some time. Its still hard to get over last year when he seemingly lost 25 games in a row in relief apperances.
by SaltyGoesYard on May 4, 2008 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions
I just hope he's not another incarnation
of Kameron Loe. Wowed us with a small sample of quality outings, then became generally ineffective as a starter.

Your just an easy target thats all, dont worry so am I.
by SaltyGoesYard on May 4, 2008 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Cause you act like a moron
we know you love Salty, that’s fantastic. For the record, I think he’s going to be the catcher of the next 10+ years for this team. But at the same time, complaining because he didn’t bat instead of a guy who’s done well the last few weeks is inane. The chances of them getting on base against a guy like Huston street is pretty comaprable when you account for the fact that one guy has been playing, and the other’s ice cold. That’s a pointless argument and is the exact thing EVERYONE bitched about when Buckles was the manager.
That’s why people don’t like you, because you’re the equivalent of Buckles on this message board. We know you like Salty, yada, yada, yada. Now please shut the fuck up about it for one Laird at bat. It’s neither clever nor entertaining. And as much fun as it might be for you to play manager armed with 20-20 hindsight, it’s pretty boring and annoying for the rest of us to read about it.
So shut up, give it a rest, you can comment on more things than Laird/Cat/Byrd/whoever else sucks. That’s annoying, it’s knee-jerky and it makes people want to put their fist through their computer screen.
So i’m going to say it again, for the love of god, shut the fuck up for awhile. We’re not taking anything out on you, you’re just annoying as fuck.
Look, dingbat
This has nothing to do with me liking Salty over Laird.
Not pinch hitting Salty OR IAN KINSLER was stupid. Letting Laird hit did not give us our best chance to win.
You guys are taking this out on me, simply because you don’t like the fact that I put things in a rather blunt manner. I’m right on this, anyone who stopped and looked at the stats and situation would agree.
This site has such a double standard – whenever posters who are not liked by the communtity say something they get flamed whether they are right or not. I’m not the only one who says stuff sucks around here, I’m just the one who always gets bashed for it.
So before you call me a pompous asshole, maybe you should climb off your mighty horse first, and let some of the air out of your fat head.
by LSJ on May 4, 2008 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Believe what you want dude
but the community is pretty consistant on what they like and what they don’t. If you’re going to act like a broken record, you’re going to be told off. Realize that people were already bitching at you when we were winning. That doesn’t tell you anything?
You’re a repetitive moron, and if you honestly do not recognize that’s why people bitch you out, then you’re a repetitive moron who also happens to be delusional. Seriously, enough with that idiotic victims complex. If you’d stop being such a repetitive moron, people would stop bitching you out. It’s not difficult, just give it a rest once in awhile.
That or go to Newberg Report, you and DOug can have the time of your life.
I frankly don't care if people think I'm repetitive
What’s repeitive is the stupid shit I’m commenting on or bitching about. I’ll say what I think about something the moment it happens, I’m not worring about whether people like it or not. And when I think I’m right, I’ll defend my point.
The real assholes are the people like you, who have some itching need to bitch me out for it. This is a blog, we’re all repetitive at some time or another. We’re repetitive in our cheers, and in our jeers. If you really feel like putting your fist in your computer screen, just because somebody is bitching about a bad play or call on the computer, you’re the one with the problem.

I would have been a little happier if Ron would have made an effort, I guess.
It wasn’t worth all this bullshit, but I didn’t know I was going to get flamed for wishing we’d have made a tiny little bit of effort at the end of the game. These days, I never know what I’m gonna get flamed for though.
I thought that FAIL image was kind of poetic – not funny, but with a message. Dude with his gun holstered, pointing his finger instead – that’s kinda what we did, letting Laird hit. And sure, just like that dude in the picture is training or something, it probably wouldn’t have mattered for us, but… it would look a lot better if he’d have bothered to unholster his gun.
