From Benson himself:
"I was not intoxicated," Benson told the Chicago Sun-Times. "There was alcohol on the boat and others were enjoying themselves, but I wasn't drunk."
"They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down," Benson told the Chicago Tribune. "I'm thinking, I passed all the tests, did everything right. Then the officer told me we needed to go to land to take more tests. I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat.
"I'm not handcuffed. I'm not under arrest. I'm not threatening him. I'm not pushing him. I'm not touching him. And he sprays me right in my eye."

“He said in the year he has owned the boat, he has been questioned by lake police six times, according to the Tribune.”
And, his mother was on the boat. Typical moronic cops who have nothing better to do…

Yes, this is very common
I can’t tell you how often I’ve politely asked a cop a question, only to be sprayed with mace. In fact, it happened on my way to work this morning. So typical of moronic cops with nothing better to do!

yep
cops don’t have nothing better to do. They are after the fact people who never prevent anything and are late to everything. Of course, they have quotas, so they pick and choose and have nothing better to do…especially these cops on the lake who keep questioning the same person for no reason…

Why would the cop mace the guy for no reason?
He may not have had the “best of intentions”, but that’s a pretty big leap from asking a polite question to getting maced. He’ll lose his job if Benson’s account is right – there were 15 or so witnesses. Do all UT athletes have the “best of intentions”?

actually
if you read the article, he was taken away from the 15 people including his mother, so, it’s now who you believe when the Cop and Benson are by themselves? I’m not saying all UT athletes have the best of intentions, i’m just tired of all these people always jumping to conclusions and ALWAYS believing just one side of the story. Benson has had his issues, the drug charges were DROPPED, and he went looking for his TV… but, if you know me, i’ve givin some athletes, UT or not, the benefit of the doubt, Pacman, Benson, Dmac…(especially in those situations)

Fair enough
But that’s a lot of benefit of the doubt. Cops tend to give more preferential treatment to athletes, not seek them out. Of course there are exceptions to that. But drug charges, the TV incident, now he’s apparently being targeted by boat cops with pepper spray? Wow. Trouble just seems to find this guy, I guess.

yeah
he’s not targeted at all, they just randomly stopped his boat 6 times by chance. Yep, that’s it!

Yeah, random!
I didn’t say they randomly stopped him 6 times. Maybe they had good reason to stop him 6 times. Sorry, I’m just having trouble finding sympathy for poor old Cedric Benson. Maybe if I could think of one reason for a low-paid public servant to pick on a millionaire athlete…

obviously what the cops did is not legal
and the cops have a different story.
my question: why do you believe benson over the cops

there are certainly times when cops lie
but people getting arrested lie a lot too. I’m not sure who to believe here.

what gets me
is the “Random” boat inspection, for possibly the 6th time since Benson got a boat…
Also, when it’s just you and some cops on a boat, those odds certainly don’t favor you when it comes to alibis and what the story will be from the cops and Benson…

Stupid.
It’s so easy to hate police, or at least put on such an affectation. It’s also pretty immature. The vast, vast majority of people stopped, arrested and charged are guilty.
Just because you like the person doing the illegal activity doesn’t mean the whole world has conspired against him. Sometimes people do stupid shit and get caught.
by brettgardner on May 5, 2008 12:03 PM CDT 0 recs
True...
but sometimes a guy asks an officer a polite question and the officer just maces him for no reason at all.

naive.
it’s so easy to say I like the person just because we went to the same school. Of course you failed to read the other posts in this thread. I’m going to stop there, because i don’t want to get sucked into a pointless argument with you and your love for Ad Hominem attacks.
I’ll just chalk this up under, thats just bg being bg…

No
You’re going to stop there because you don’t have a legitimate defense of Benson or his actions.
Oh, he said he didn’t do it? Jesus Christ—we’re all morons! The whole legal system is so flawed. All we need to do is ask the suspect if he did it.
And I did read every post in this thread. The truth, though, is that your posts are rather repetitive.

I get your point. Cops are bad guys just picking on poor Cedric Benson. You know, though, I drove by a guy who had been pulled over today. I bet he was being profiled. Too bad I didn’t stop to ask him his alma mater so you could know whether to feel indignant or not.

re:
i’m not sure why he would make this up….
“Once the boat docked, Benson refused to leave the LCRA boat, authorities said. An LCRA officer and Travis County sheriff’s deputies were “basically carrying/dragging him” to a car for transport to jail, the release said.
Again Benson gave a different account: “They kicked my feet out from under me and slammed my face down. They had a hose and were running it over my face. They were choking me and stuff, not with their hands but with the hose in my face. I couldn’t breathe. I don’t know if they did that because of the pepper spray, but I didn’t ask them to put the hose in my face.”“

My guess is
some cop arrested Longhorn and he got anally raped in jail.
That would explain a lot.
A drugged out/drunk ex-Longhorn? What are the odds?

police reports are always right. i see. okay, case closed.

I choose
I’m being reasonable and you’re not.
Police reports are not always “right”, but neither are prejudiced witnesses, and when given a choice between the two, I and most reasonable people will choose the report.
And what does that last bit mean? Are you telling me that UT-the most liberal public school in the most liberal city in a 700 mile radius-is really the epicenter of such insidious racism that she needed to qualify her statement in such a way? Please. Maybe at Tech-where unfortunately the only black people are student-athletes-I would be more sympathetic.
I get that you have this inherent and misplaced distrust of police, and a presumption of innocence for a player that went to your alma mater, but it doesn’t do wonders for your objectivity.
