Rockies Looking at Millwood

Just FYI - Some nice options there in Colorado and they will be eager to get a good pitcher for the right price later in the year. May be something worth watching in the future.

"The Rockies also have kicked the tires on Oakland's Rich Harden and Joe Blanton and Texas' Kevin Millwood. Harden is hurt, limiting interest; Blanton is currently not available. And while the Rangers will listen on Millwood, they want the right players in return, not salary relief.'

If we're even considering trading Millwood...

it better be for one hell of an overwhelming package. I see no reason to let him go, other than salary relief.

Maybe this is too old-fashioned; but wouldn’t having a veteran like Millwood on the staff be a good thing for the younger pitchers coming up? I just don’t see Padilla filling that “mentor” role. If either one of our top 2 rotation guys goes, I see it being Padilla.

Millwood until 2010 is one thing, he might not be the greatest #1, but you pretty much know what you’re getting every time out. Padilla is way too erratic.

I guess it mostly comes down to, who’s going to be ready by 2009/2010 and who is more deserving of $12 mill by that point: Padilla (club option) or Millwood (already signed)?

how many rookies has millwood mentored well so far?

who is our team president? as far as pitching goes, seems like a better mentor than kevin millwood to me…

it will be interesting

to see how many teams come calling on CJ Wilson as trade season nears.

Why?

would we consider trading Millwood at this point? Unless a team is willing to give away the farm, I’d say we should sit on him. He’s performing (or at least was until last night) really well and his contract is not as outrageous as it might have seemed at one point (just ask the Giants about this re: Zito).

As for CJ…NO WAY do I trade him at this point. He’s not even arb-eligible until next year. He’s the kind of guy that we want to have here as this team prepares to compete.

Rockies

Not a lot to like in their system. Seems like their whole system has gotten off to a bad start. At any rate, there’s no pitching involved which is a downer but would Stewart/Fowler/Gomez sound right? I don’t think the Rockies make the right trading partners, unless they want to include Morales ;).

by groundingout on May 6, 2008 11:42 AM CDT reply reply   0 recs

they have some lower level guys

specifically gomez

would they trade stewart/fowler/h gomez for millwood? no way in hell.

would i take say ian stewart/juan morillo? yes.

You should take another look

the Rangers would be lucky to have Colorado get desperate and trade for Millwood. Their system is loaded with near or at ML level young players.
1. Franklin Morales, who is 22 and just got demoted to AAA, is phenomenal
2. Jason Hirsh is hurt and it’s a shoulder thing, so you probably don’t want to trade for him, but he’s at least as good if not a better prospect than Hurley.
3. Greg Reynolds who was their first rounder (#2 overall) a couple years ago is at AAA
4. Brandon Hynick at AA might be a nice sweetener as well. He’s started his AA transition rough, but he was great at high-A California last year
5. Ian Stewart is young and has no position to play with the big club right now
6. Jeff Baker, who plays all over the field for them and Ryan Spillbourghs who is their 4th OF are both great players and might be add-ons
7. SS Chris Nelson and CF Dexter Fowler (probably untouchable) are both at AA, and the Rocks have a good hitting catching prospect in the California league

If the Rangers can get the Rocks interested, they should pitch a combination of Millwood and Bradley or Benoit or whatever they can to get the Rocks to give up a big package of kids.

Milwood is Good; Milwood is Cheap

I strongly disagree trading him unless we get an exceptional package.

by FuturePants on May 6, 2008 12:03 PM CDT reply reply   0 recs

One that must include at least

one ML-ready pitcher to replace his spot.

I agree with OC on that.

Nah

I’d deal him straight up for Jay Bruce ;)
