Okay, we're now dealing with a 2 game losing streak.

But not to worry...we have Sidney Ponson pitching tonight!

Go Rangers...

The funny thing is....

Im actually really looking forward to watching Ponsoon. I like his assortment of pitches and when his pitches are really diving to the deck, he can make guys look foolish

slc, u here?

Boston is playing like crap. Sam Cassell needs to go back to LA….what a waste of space.

I'm just saying

that I think it’s funny how we are so desperate for pitching that we look forward to watching Sidney Ponson pitching.

Welp

It ought to be interesting to see if the Pontoon stays afloat today…

Lineup

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 8:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That lineup

should be able to score runs. When Hank comes back and Chris Davis comes up that seems to be a whole 1 through 9 that I enjoy looking at.

Am I wrong?

by geetar85 on May 6, 2008 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree wholeheartedly

I don’t even mind seeing Vazquez or Duran temporarily.

sub in hank for vazquez and thats a pretty nice lineup

Ponson

Could anyone who saw his last start talk about his stuff? Was it that good or did he just get lucky?

Didn't get to watch...

but 8 IP, 5 H, 2 BB’s and 5 K’s sounds like his stuff was on.

by cmkelly29 on May 6, 2008 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was good

Threw 108 pitches through 8 innings of work, 76 of which where strikes. Gave up 6 hits and walked two, but got two doubled play balls, and struck out 5.

The only run he allowed came on a broken bat bloop single.

Hamilton

has dropped from 336/386/582 to 300/347/531 in his last 5 games. Lets hope he can get back to his ways tonight.

It has probably just been a simple evening out.

Gavin Floyd of the CWS

No hitter thru 7. But he has given up a run.

by sprite on May 6, 2008 9:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks

Yeah, that’s weird.

Of course, he is no-hitting the Twins, though – not all that hard to shut that offense down if you can get Mauer and Morneau out.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

what?

I would trade our offense for their offense any day. (with hambone)

by coolaid on May 6, 2008 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets see here...

Well, the Twins probably have the better OF offense, but save for Morneau their INF sucks. We’re without Blalock right now, but I’d still rather have our offense.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My guess..

2 walks then an error.

This could be a fun game to play.

Why has there been a rash of comercials for ED medicine during the late night Ranger games? Have we been that bad that its affecting our manhood?

I am counting on you posters, and Ponson, and Hammy to keep this game in check tonight.

Have fun!!!

Ibanez will be a coach/manager, based on the pre-game interview.

Ok, off to the other room to watch Iron Man.

Go Rangers!

a struggling pitcher… and we’re bunting and giving away outs…

Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.

by WhipSmart on May 6, 2008 9:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he was bunting for a hit

knowing that if he drew sexson far enough off of first he would have been safe easily. It would have been a sacrifice either way so why not?

by texrangers31 on May 6, 2008 9:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think...

...he was bunting for a hit…

That didn’t look like a sac bunt try.

by Adam J. Morris on May 6, 2008 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

doesnt matter

what he was doing he still gave up 4 or 5 pitches to a tired guy and should have been swinging

by blueballlefty on May 6, 2008 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and it pretty much guaranteed a run

it didn’t look like a called sac bunt. But given the results its fine by me. Seriously whether a guy has 65-68 pitches after 2 innings doesn’t make that big a difference

by bigsteve on May 6, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i know thats not the objective

but a guy that tired likely going to give a pitch to hit it was a poor decision and not good baseBALL

by blueballlefty on May 6, 2008 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the object of the game

is to score more runs than the other team, not knock the opposing pitcher out of the game in the 2nd or 3rd inning because of a high pitch count

by texrangers31 on May 6, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That fact is why...

I don’t like a bunt there.

Hey, it could be worse...

by HighPlainsGrifter on May 6, 2008 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whether that was a bunt for a hit or not

I do not like the fact that Ron Washington has seeded this team with the idea that bunting with a runner on second and nobody out in the 2nd inning is good baseball.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 9:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah youre right

seeding his team with the idea that scoring more runs than your opponent is the wrong message.

by bigsteve on May 6, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok

so what if kinsler grounds out to 3rd base right there and the runner doesn’t move up? Youngs sac fly moves him to 3rd and Hammy strikes out and we only have 2 on the board instead of 3. The object is scoring runs. Whether its a 400 ft home run or a sac bunt followed by a sac fly. They mean the same. Give it a rest man

by bigsteve on May 6, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And what if Kinsler doubles?

Or homers? Seriously, it’s the top of the order. You shouldn’t be afraid to let the top of your order swing the bat.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said

It didn’t look like a called sac bunt there. Who knows what would have happened. Instead of bitching about a sac bunt why don’t you appreciate the fact that we gave Ponson an extra run of support.

by bigsteve on May 6, 2008 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Getting the run was fine

I’m just saying I do not like the fact that Ron’s philosophy has given the top of the order the idea to bunt in that situation. It would be different if it was late in the game, or if that had been Ramon Vazquez, but that was Ian Kinsler, and that was the second inning.

Kinsler should not be pulling Gerald Laird moves by bunting for hits, his bat has more potential than that.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I got no problem with the idea of manufacturing runs,

but when you got a pitcher on the ropes, i would prefer to swing away and attempt to get to the pen.

by laxtonto on May 6, 2008 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok

he still has almost 70 pitches. hes not gonna go the distance now that we bunted there.

by bigsteve on May 6, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

when you bunt there

you absolutely take a big inning out of the equation,
by bunting there you resign yourself to scoring 1 run when,
the possibility of scoring 3 or 4 presents itself so in the
end my conclusion bigsteve is YOUR WRONG!

by blueballlefty on May 6, 2008 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

the big inning is still a possibility. You have 2,3,4 coming up who can generate offense. If we were down by 3 or 4 runs or had been scoring a bunch or runs lately then yeah mayeb I could see your point. But we haven’t. A lot of 2,3,4 run games, a guy on the mound who, as good as he has been so far, you don’t really know what he will give you. So I don’t mind capitalizing a leadoff double even if it means giving up 1 out in the 2nd inning. If the pitcher really is that tired we will have other chances to get a big inning.

Sweet

Batista… 2.1 IP, 5R, 5ER, 3H, 6BB, 85 pitches… and he’s done.

I just hope Baek doesn’t dominate the Rangers now.

I refuse to watch american poker even.

I still am stunned that it is on tv.

that’s why it’s all over the tv dial.

I watch poker

not because it is exciting or anything, but I play a lot of poker and I enjoy seeing the different situations and how the pros handle them…

I used to think that

But once I got laid, I stopped watching Showtime late at night and found out that poker is the only thing on at 2:00AM. Mildly entertaining.

I'm okay

with watching a little poker. I’m just wondering why FSN shows Australian poker? Not enough poker in North America? Are Australians superior poker players? Seem like a long way to go for poker.

it's an international poker tourney that happens to be in Australia

a lot of American players are in it…

Value Over Replacement Player

It’s how many runs a player has contributed on offense above what, basically, a scrub at his postion would.

Baseball Prospectus can give you more on the nitty gritty. Someone posted a link.

should we bunt here?

by blueballlefty on May 6, 2008 10:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

not up 5

You can’t take runs for granted especially early in the game. Now that we do have a 5 run lead you don’t necessarily need to worry about it as much

salty

doesnt it seem like salty swingin’ for the fences everytime?

by FreeMoney4Sale on May 6, 2008 10:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

He seems to be overswinging right now. I don’t know whether it’s the excitement of being in the majors, or him trying to compete with Gerald Laird, but the fact that he is not getting everyday AB’s seems to be hurting him.

by lonestarJon on May 6, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can't deny

That not getting every day AB’s is not good for Salty. At the rate this platoon bullshit is going, I’m almost sorry Salty got called up. He needs to play every day.

It was far from a stupid trade.

Slightly below a wash, but as much as I love Hamilton, I’m almost as high on Volquez and think this franchise would benifit more from a 24 year old pitcher than a 27 year old outfielder.

by philkid3 on May 6, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well.. how good would Volquez..

have to have been to approximate what Ham has already done?
6-0 with 1.70 era and two shutouts? I love the trade thus far!

by HighPlainsGrifter on May 6, 2008 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This year?

I have very little doubt Hammilton will be worth more this year. I’m not really concerned about this year.

by philkid3 on May 6, 2008 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That said, going in to tonight:

Edinson Volquez Pitching VORP: 16.3

Josh Hamilton VORP: 10.7

So, thus far, Volquez has probably contributed more.

just because i want to see him stay on the team
