Richie Sexson

What a damned joke. Should get 20 games for that bush league crap. He basically charged the mound for a ball that he would have been out on if it had hit him.

Sad thing is

even if he’s suspended for a number of games, he won’t be missed much.

That's more than just a normal brawl too

He didn’t get hit by a pitch and it wasn’t even close. Add onto that the size difference, the helmet throw, and Gabbard possibly re-injuring himself and the league better crack down on his ass.

by Gdawg on May 8, 2008 10:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

don't care about the Mariners

they suck either way. A huge suspension takes money away from Sexson. Its like a dumbass tax

by Gdawg on May 8, 2008 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear

there is a first baseman available if they need one for a few weeks. I think they are familiar with him. Maybe they would give up a minor league utility guy to get him.

by badradiorules on May 8, 2008 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's the point?

Selig will hand out some half-ass suspension, the MLBPA will successfully appeal for it to be reduced, and he’ll end up with five games off.

This is because suspensions in Major League Baseball are a joke.

by DSheppard on May 8, 2008 10:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

laird/bradley

Bradley was basically pushing laird back across the diamond. He was really pushing into him and looked a little annoyed. The only thing I’d say is that Bradley was trying to make sure that the catcher didn’t get tossed for someone else being a set of f’n clown shoes.

But they where a little more subdued than what I heard TAG and Josh where. I think they where more stunned than anything.

OK . . .

I’m not watching the game – just saw the replay on gameday. From the description, I didn’t realize that Sexson was that close when he threw the helmet and hit Gabbard so squarely. That could draw an unprecedented suspension, maybe 20-50 games. I’ve never seen anything like that in the majors.

Watching Extra Innings and got the Seattle announce crew

Could they be any dumber? They’re defending it, they’re proud of the fact, they overreacted on “how close the pitch was to his head”, they practically fucking gloated when Gabbard had to leave the game…

It’s god damn sickening.

by venturafearsnolan on May 8, 2008 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

celebrating an injury they are even weaker than Sexson.

by JayK on May 8, 2008 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They didn't come out and say it

But the tone of their voice definitely said “Well if he didn’t want to leave the game he shouldn’t have thrown at Sexson’s head” (why they are STILL going on and on about that when it was 2 feet away I will never know).

I don’t know if I’ve ever heard announcers as homer-retarded as these.

by LiamP on May 8, 2008 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t have enough faith in this league to suspend him for any more than 3 games.

by LiamP on May 8, 2008 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No what should cost him is simple

He charged the mound at a point in time that there was ZERO reason to charge the mound. The ball wasn’t near him. His team had hit 2 batters already in the game. I think he needs a suspension because theres no reason at all for him to charge the mound.

Throwing the helmet was way beyond the bounds of fair play. Charging the mound, even if the pitch wasn’t close is no big deal, 1-3 games. But throwing the helmet at such close range is going to be punished.

Per Rotoworld:
Richie Sexson was ejected from Thursday’s game for charging the mound versus the Rangers’ Kason Gabbard.

Felix Hernandez had hit two batters, so Sexson sensed it was retaliatory when Gabbard buzzed him in the fourth, even if the pitch wasn’t all that close to hitting him. He was the only player tossed as a result of the incident, though Gabbard was removed soon thereafter. Sexson, who threw his helmet at Gabbard, likely will face a four- or five-game suspension

He’d better get more than 5 games…

Ya....That's Real Mature.

well its now the story

of the game unfortunately, not Gabbard going for an extended shutout. Before long it may well be about Gabbard going back to the DL for an injury cuased by Sexson.

Gotta love ESPN

One of the bigger baseball things tonight, and they have an AP blurb and no pictures.

by JayK on May 8, 2008 11:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

What prevents them from doing that?

by jwiscarson on May 8, 2008 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So

unless your show solely devotes itself to baseball, you can’t show mid-game highlights?

by jwiscarson on May 8, 2008 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My understanding is that ESPN has

an agreement with MLB to show highlights of games in progress for “Baseball Tonight” but can’t do so for Sportscenter.

by Randy Richardson on May 8, 2008 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I think other than Baseball Tonight which has the special deal, rights for televised games still in progress remain squarely with the broadcasters showing the game itself.

The M's

broadcast not really showing any replays of the brawl.

by coolaid on May 8, 2008 11:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

well if your position is

that Sexson was justified in charging the mound, then of course your not cause replays are going to show him charging the mound on a high ball over the plate and then tossing his helmet.

by JayK on May 8, 2008 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why would they?

If they show a replay they would know what really happened

But you know, there are STILL Rangers fans defending Frankie Francisco throwing a chair into the stands.

by Adam J. Morris on May 8, 2008 11:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That was indefensible

no matter how you slice it. However… that fan hit with the chair was not scheduled to pitch every 5th day.

It doesn't matter

Neither action is excusable, regardless if the “victim” is a baseball player or not.

by Telegraph on May 8, 2008 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, they're not

and the chair toss was definitely worse. I’m saying this sucks because this could adversely affect our team down the road where the other incident didn’t affect anyone but team tossing the chair. In essence, they fucked us and better pay a price from the league.

I'm pretty sure...

I remember reading that the Rangers bullpen guys kept asking security to do something and they never did anything. They also asked for extra security due to earlier events in the series and none were given either.

as I said in the other thread

At least there was some reason for that fight to have happened. Was it a good enough reason to throw a chair into the stands? No, but it wasn’t anything like Sexson who charged the mound because a pitcher decided to do his job and throw a pitch over the plate.

by Gdawg on May 8, 2008 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franky just lost his head

Sexson was looking for any reason to charge the mound. Looked premeditated.

by TexasTiger on May 8, 2008 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is

it removes the ability to easily soak up a bad outting for a few days. So what happens if Feldman gets lit tomorrow. Then the BP will have been very stressed.

Hopefully I’m worrying about nothing.
