David Pinto on the pitch to Sexson
David Pinto, who has no dog in the hunt, has this to say about the pitch that prompted Richie Sexson to rush the mound:
Update: Comments from people who saw the pitch say Gabbard did not throw at Sexson. I'm watching the Seattle feed, and they seemed to indicate Gabbard threw at him, although they were a bit ambiguous about it.
Update: FSN Northwest finally showed the replay in the bottom of the sixth. The pitch from Gabbard was head high, but right over the middle of the plate. It was no where near hitting Sexson.

does EG have another source?
a blog post on the Dallas Observer’s Web site that, citing unnamed sources, said the Rangers have already decided to change managers
Unless Evan Grant has some sort of coloborating info, he shouldn’t have published this.

Citing unnamed sources is usually a big no-no in journalism. Obviously, I agree—he shouldn’t have published this.

I don’t think that’s true.

Well
At least in the sense of the absolutely no idea what position the source holds.
“someone in the upper management” and such yeah, ok then.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

this is the interesting part
The report also said that Ryan had ordered Daniels to call up rookies Brandon Boggs, German Duran and A.J. Murray, who have contributed during the Rangers recent run.
That can’t be true. And, i don’t see why EG would write a column about a post, on a blog, from another newspaper, from unnamed sources, on this particular issue.

if thats true
then daniels is on his way out.
I didnt mind the hiring of nolan ryan, as i felt he’d be good for the non-baseball side of the rangers and good for marketing, but he shouldnt be saying who should and shouldnt be called up in my opinion. that needs to be left to the gm and manager who run day to day baseball operations.

more...with details.
A report on the Dallas Observer’s website, citing unnamed sources, says the Rangers administration has made the decision to fire manager Ron Washington and names four likely replacement candidates: Don Baylor, Mike Hargrove, Jim Tracy and Jackie Moore. It also indicated that Nolan Ryan had ordered Daniels to start playing young players such as Brandon Boggs and A.J. Murray (who was called up for a spot start).

I'm not sure...
how Nolan could have ordered JD to do anything with Boggs or Murray. Weren’t they basically the only people who could reasonably be called up? And JD doesn’t fill out the lineup cards.

I was always taught that and have always adhered to it. Then again, I’m in small town journalism. People in small towns love to talk and see their names in the paper.

Not good enough for me...
That might work for some, but I don’t think I would be satisfied with that. Fortunately, I’ve never had to resort to unnamed sources. And hopefully never will.

Greatness
Just saw Bradley picking up Laird. Bradley is skyrocketing along the board of my favorite Rangers.

no orders given
Odd timing, I know, in that recent confabs between president Nolan Ryan, general manager Jon Daniels and Washington led to a youth infusion of Brandon Boggs, German Duran and A.J. Murray that has propelled the team to wins in six out of eight games and out of last place in the American League.
Sounds like Ryan and JD discussed the direction the team needs to go in. They decided to start the youth movement. Doesn’t sound like Ryan ordered JD to do anything. IMHO, I think JD has been following Hicks “stay competitive” mandate and Ryan told JD to not worry about it.

IF thats true, and ryan is 100% on board with rebuilding then that might be the best thing to happen to the rangers

I think this sounds about right...
JD may have been toeing the previous company-line to stay competitive in a futile attempt to preserve a dwindling fanbase, and Nolan told him to get on with the rebuilding. I doubt he named players to call up, probably just made a general demand to “cut bait on this season, start making your roster moves that are going to help us in the future, and let me worry about the business side”
by bhudson on May 9, 2008 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
forgot to add...
If it actually went something like that, then it was entirely appropriate for Nolan to do that, and within the scope of his job.
by bhudson on May 9, 2008 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd like to think that's true...
...but I believe the “youth movement” has been a function of the 40 man, rather than trying to give guys a shot.

dallas observer
Please tell me we aren’t relying on a Dallas Observer story that cites unnamed sources. They don’t know shit about baseball at the Observer, those haters.

Sexson's comments
http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/foul_territory/
I just don’t understand why Sexson felt he was going to get hit. Gabbard had plenty of opportunities after Kinsler got beaned. Why did Sexson think it was going to happen then? To him?

Sexson
I understand that he felt it was coming at his head, and who knows he may have been told look for one high. But his reaction was just idiotic. Also, after things settled down last night i was saying that he missed the game the night before due to a family matter and that might have played a part in his short fuse.

hiding behind his kid
all sorts of classy things coming out of richie sexson’s mouth. I would normally have empathy for that guy but he showed absolutely no remorse and he’s stubborn as a mule. The Rangers couldn’t care less about plunking Richie Sexson.

don’t get me wrong, i wasnt defending him or supporting his comments, but the thought crossed my mind last night that whatever personal crap he had going on played a part. it wasn’t until later i found out his child was sick and everythings fine now.
the dumbest part wasn’t even rushing the mound after a pitch came nowhere near him, it was the fact that he ran out there and threw his helmet at gabbard

Injury update? Sorry, time zone problem again, but the sexon horse manure charge really iritated me, especially if gabbard is seriously injured.

apparently bruised legs from being under the pile, nothing serious

two “r’s” in irritated, under the pile can be a bit difficult sometimes. The “advantage” to my time zone is that I can “do” the west coast games early morning my time.
