Milton and the Cubs

Not sure if this is worthy of a whole fanpost, but I really think this might be a good fit for a trade a month or two down the road.  The Cubs have a solid team this year and should be the favorites to come out of the NL central, but their OF production has struggled this year with Soriano getting hurt and Pie being ineffective.  Reed Johnson has taken a larger role, but he is what he is.

Because of Bradley's ability to play CF, his OBP, and his power potential, he should be of interest to the Cubs (among many other teams).  Pineilla has been clamoring for an OF upgrade since spring training.  While Byrd was obviously not enough to pull a player like Sean Gallagher, perhaps Bradley is.  As much as I enjoy watching MB play and acknowledge what he adds to this team, if we can spin him for a young pitcher like Gallagher, a groundout/strikeout pitcher, then I think we should.

Is this a realistic scenario?

I think the Cubs would have to see...

...Bradley play some more in the outfield before making a trade for him. Certainly they would want to see him play 5-6 straight games in the outfield first.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

exactly

the guys a dh right now and can still barely play in the outfield.

Why trade Bradley

he is still young, seems to enjoy playing here, is a bat that any team could use …....

It is possible that he is a DH most of the time, but so what.

That is not me in the photo, so relax.

I am in favor of a 2-3 year extension...

...for a fair price.

hmmm

why wouldn’t you trade him in July and then sign him to a 3 year deal this winter?

Bradley

I wouldn’t have a problem keeping Bradley if he agreed to DH only, but I’m not sure he’d agree to do that.

I think people are a bit misguided if they believe Bradley can still be a plus defender, and even if he is still a plus defender, letting him play OF just increases the likelihood of injury.

Trade seems better

I think it would be best to trade him, since we are not heading into the playoffs. This would give us an extra spot to try out the young kids. With Bradley’s health, the longer we keep him around, the more likely it is he gets hurt and loses all value. If, after the end of the season, Bradley has stayed healthy (on another team) and seems like a good fit again, we can always sign him then. At least the trade will offset the possible lost picks. Basically, you will end up trading next year’s picks for young players that already have a minor league track record and are a couple of years closer to the big leagues. This fits with out 2009-2010 plan.

While I'm in favor of an extension (see above)...

...I also am in favor of exploring trade options. If a fair package can be obtained then go for it.

One can hope

They’ll trade him and consider bringing him back depending on how Boggs, Murphy, and MaxRam play the outfield/DH down the stretch. I love the leadership and the bat but if he can be flipped for a Eithier type prospect then he needs to go. Someone who can come up and play 3rd or 1st just in case would be nice. As would a #1 or 2 SP in AA.

a lot of people

are saying we should bring him back, but then adding a lot of stipulations…reasonable price, plays mostly DH, etc. the thing is, I doubt that happens. as we saw with GMJ, OF talent coming off a strong year goes for a premium, esp when the player CAN play CF. Bradley was going to play it safe at the onset of the year and mostly DH, but I would assume he wants to go back out in the field more and more. luckily for the team, with the emergence of boggs, we certainly don’t need to rush bradley’s return as an everyday OF.

that said, i think he will bring back a very nice return if he stays healthy, i also strongly doubt he resigns with a historically poor team at a reasonable price this offseason.

Perhaps I should expand my above statement

Because of the fragile condition of his hamstrings, knees, and the fact that he could not get to two fairly routine fly balls in RF a few nights ago, Milton Bradley cannot play CF these days. Going to the NL would be a disaster for him, considering his current fragile state.
