Sexson suspended six

Richie Sexson has been suspended six games for last night's episode.

Gerald Laird and Sidney Ponson have also been fined.  Ponson doesn't seem like the brawling type, to me...

he's appealing

While I’d love to see Padilla put one in his ear, I really hope he drops the appeal because it’s going to be bad regardless on Monday. I’d hate to see an injury in another brawl or Hamilton getting hurt by a bean.

the appeal

i guess he’s going to talk about how much of a control pitcher gabbard is. Think he’ll reference the 3BB’s in the game?

Pushing your teamate won't get you fined

He pushed Laird and told him to calm down so he wouldn’t get ejected.

I don't get Wash's quot in your sig

is 6-13 supposed to be his height or his age range. Either way it’s pretty funny but still strange

he said 6-13 referring to Sexson's height

what up boss? didn’t read the Friday morning links today?

i just read it

and i agree that he is probably referring to height but it’s not all that clear, not much context.

but that is an awesome quote. I’m going to start using that with tall people.

Maybe he tried and failed

If you think about it, Gabbard is a lefty and his fastball can tail up and away from a right handed batter. Maybe he tried to plunk Sexon in the back but missed up and away (over the strikezone) and Sexon missed the tailing action on it (but not the rising action). I’ve seen that from other players, where their head fly’s away from a pitch which is up but not really inside. (course I’ve never seen any who charge the mound over it.)

by iblum on May 9, 2008 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No Doubt It's Possible

...but unless Gabbard opens his mouth and says, “I tried to hit him but just missed,” all we have to go on are the facts and the video. Those things clearly indicate that Gabbard was nowhere near DickSex, so you can’t infer it was just a missed spot. Gabbard had been wild all night, just like King Felix. The league knows it, and that’s probably why Gabbard got no punishment….other than DickSex on top of him.

gabbard actually said

that he was trying to go away, that laird kept asking for it inside and that he kept waving it off. and, obviously, the ball got away from him. he could be lying but i believe him.

Concur...

it may be best that he appeals and is in the lineup agaginst the Rangers anyway.

Given how great a hitter he’s been the last 2 seasons.

suspension

i figured mlb would suspending him about 5games, so this is right in line with what i expected.
If he’s smart he’d just take the suspension and not appeal, not like the mariners are going anywhere fast.

suspensions

i think it’s without pay, but i don’t see them knocking anything off that …. ok maybe 1 game off

he might not want to

he’s 6-8 and clearly has no qualms about picking fights.

but even that one game is a substantial sum of money and I bet the player’s union really forces you to appeal.

I can kind of see Laird getting fined…but Ponson?

Suspension Guidelines

Here’s something I’ve wondered about before with injuries and suspensions in MLB. Taking Sexson’s suspension as an example, how about advocating for changing the suspension guidelines to where his suspension would read “Suspended 6 games or until the player he injured comes off the DL”?

I know that would leave room to game the suspension system, but it seems to me that if you do something as blatant as charging a pitcher who didn’t come close to hitting you and you injure him, you need to be suspended at least until he is able to pitch again. If he doesn’t miss his turn in the rotation then Sexson is suspended six games. If he misses three weeks, then Sexson is suspended three weeks.

As a division rival, though, I’d hate to deprive the Mariners’ lineup of that Mendoza-esque line of his for too long.

Not a bad idea...

but what if Hamslam charges the mound against Batista and Miguel is hurt. Then the M’s keep him out for 3 months because he sucks, just so the Rangers can’t play Josh.

I get the idea, but there would be no way to enforce it. DickSex should have got 10 games imo.

And King Felix should have got a 6 game suspension for not shuting the f@#k up. That assclown hit 2 guys and acted like the Rangers hit 3 batters before him. Then he acts like a asshole after striking out Cat in the 5th. What a amazing jackass he was yesterday.

Suprised Felix didn't catch a game suspension

2 hit batters, and had to be restrained by 2 players.

The fact that he was even allowed to stay in the game is questionable.

Players union..

.. seems to be at a conflict. An appeal of Sexson’s suspension seems to indicate that they do not support defending Gabbard. How do they reconcile that conflict?

MLB Ruling Changed

The Mariners will continue to be forced to play Sexson at least 5 nights a week and pay his huge salary, they will however get a 6 game break because no team should have to play Sexson every night all season.

by phina on May 9, 2008 7:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I was hoping for 10 games...

with it being reduced to the 6-8 game region after appeal.

That's not really punishment.

If the league really wanted to punish Sexson, they’d make hit twice in the lineup so he’d embarrass himself twice as much. They’d be doing Seattle a favor if they suspended him twice as long.

Instead of suspending him...

the league should make the M’s have to make him bat for Ichiro for 6 games.

Besides,

maybe Sexon really did think the ball was about to hit him. Have you looked at his stats? Does that look like the stats of a guy who knows where the ball is?
