5/9/08 game day thread
Oakland @ Texas
A return home to face the hated Oakland A's...
Scott Feldman goes up against crafty lefty finesser Greg Smith, who is the type of pitcher who gives the Rangers fits, so we better hope for a low-scoring game...
Go Rangers...

Too bad
Btw, if you saw that lineup in March and told us that would be our lineup (and pitcher) on May 9th, I don’t think there would have been much hope for this game.
I dig it, though, and am really looking forward to this game, even against the daunting Greg Smith.

isnt he still not really healthy?
thought i saw someone say he was just an emergency option at this point in case of injury.

How can this team be taught
to hit these guys. Its as if 80mph from the left side is kryptonite to this team. They should start have Gabbard throw batting practice every day. Better yet, go find John Koronka and pay him $1.5 million to throw BP at game speeds

smith is just a pretty good pitcher
hes got a 2.5 era, not like everyone other than the rangers are mashing him..
but its definitely frustrating to watch.

that lineup
makes me happy. they have mench, barajas and wilk in this lineup. remember the rios for mench rumors from 2006? remember the blalock for rolen rumors? and how so many were sure that Michael Young could convince Arlington native Vernon Wells to sign down here.
This could have been our line up.

RonWash breaks it down:
Haha!!!
“We don’t have any animosity against those guys, and I don’t know why they would have any against us,” Washington said. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve gone into Seattle and got our ass handed to us. We finally go into Seattle and whup their ass, and now there’s animosity? Nah, we just played better baseball.”

I really like the guy. I’d rather have him as a coach than a manager but still glad to have a person of his character in our organization.

greg smith is just really good
and the rangers aren’t great against lefties to begin with.
BTW, this is not a good pitcher for Josh to try to break out of his slump against. I don’t think josh is capable of hitting Greg’s slider

Poochie doing well tonight
Believe it or not…
...there’s an autographed picture of that (Ventura) moment hanging on the wall in the hallway from the clubhouse to the manager’s office. Ryan wrote: “Some wins are harder than others.”

You know...
Just once I’d like to see the A’s put out a terrible team that stinks from day one to the end of the season. No matter the talent level in Oakland they always seem to hang around for a while each season.
Whereas the Rangers just tank in April year after year and let us know where they stand right away.
It’s infuriating.

Welp, 1-0
Ham’s still slumping, but he’s still driving in runs!
by lonestarJon on May 9, 2008 7:20 PM CDT 0 recs
Regarding the RBIs are crap story
how does a sacrifice that gets a run home get recorded if not through RBIs? I know that doesn’t make it the best stat, necessarily, but it does seem to make it, in fact, necessary.
Am I wrong?
by geetar85 on May 9, 2008 7:21 PM CDT 0 recs
I think the argument is
RBIs aren’t entirely within a player’s control. Unless he gets a home run, any RBIs are dependent on other people.

id like to see a stat
that was more like rbis per runner on base for the batter or something like that.
it may be flukey on just happening to get your hits with runners on, but it still wins games.

yeah
the way NBA is starting to use rebound rate as opposed to just rebounds. while hitting with RISP might fluctuate based on flukey reasons, you could get an idea of whether a player is good at sacrificing when he had the chance.

It gets recorded as a sacrifice.
EqA even includes that in the equation.

does it get recorded as a sacrifice that brings in a run?
or just a sacrifice? It seems like one is much more valuable than the other.
