5/9/08 game day thread

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers, May 9, 2008 7:05 PM CDT

A return home to face the hated Oakland A's...

Scott Feldman goes up against crafty lefty finesser Greg Smith, who is the type of pitcher who gives the Rangers fits, so we better hope for a low-scoring game...

Go Rangers...

Season debut tonight?

by badradiorules on May 9, 2008 6:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Too bad

Btw, if you saw that lineup in March and told us that would be our lineup (and pitcher) on May 9th, I don’t think there would have been much hope for this game.

I dig it, though, and am really looking forward to this game, even against the daunting Greg Smith.

isnt he still not really healthy?

thought i saw someone say he was just an emergency option at this point in case of injury.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

How can this team be taught

to hit these guys. Its as if 80mph from the left side is kryptonite to this team. They should start have Gabbard throw batting practice every day. Better yet, go find John Koronka and pay him $1.5 million to throw BP at game speeds

by JBImaknee on May 9, 2008 6:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

smith is just a pretty good pitcher

hes got a 2.5 era, not like everyone other than the rangers are mashing him..

but its definitely frustrating to watch.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

that lineup

makes me happy. they have mench, barajas and wilk in this lineup. remember the rios for mench rumors from 2006? remember the blalock for rolen rumors? and how so many were sure that Michael Young could convince Arlington native Vernon Wells to sign down here.

This could have been our line up.

RonWash breaks it down:

Haha!!!

“We don’t have any animosity against those guys, and I don’t know why they would have any against us,” Washington said. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve gone into Seattle and got our ass handed to us. We finally go into Seattle and whup their ass, and now there’s animosity? Nah, we just played better baseball.”

I really like the guy. I’d rather have him as a coach than a manager but still glad to have a person of his character in our organization.

greg smith is just really good

and the rangers aren’t great against lefties to begin with.

BTW, this is not a good pitcher for Josh to try to break out of his slump against. I don’t think josh is capable of hitting Greg’s slider

You know...

Just once I’d like to see the A’s put out a terrible team that stinks from day one to the end of the season. No matter the talent level in Oakland they always seem to hang around for a while each season.

Whereas the Rangers just tank in April year after year and let us know where they stand right away.

It’s infuriating.

Regarding the RBIs are crap story

how does a sacrifice that gets a run home get recorded if not through RBIs? I know that doesn’t make it the best stat, necessarily, but it does seem to make it, in fact, necessary.

Am I wrong?

by geetar85 on May 9, 2008 7:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the argument is

RBIs aren’t entirely within a player’s control. Unless he gets a home run, any RBIs are dependent on other people.

by Inkara1 on May 9, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

id like to see a stat

that was more like rbis per runner on base for the batter or something like that.

it may be flukey on just happening to get your hits with runners on, but it still wins games.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

by DSheppard on May 9, 2008 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

the way NBA is starting to use rebound rate as opposed to just rebounds. while hitting with RISP might fluctuate based on flukey reasons, you could get an idea of whether a player is good at sacrificing when he had the chance.

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on May 9, 2008 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It gets recorded as a sacrifice.

EqA even includes that in the equation.

by philkid3 on May 9, 2008 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

does it get recorded as a sacrifice that brings in a run?

or just a sacrifice? It seems like one is much more valuable than the other.

Yep. Only 63 pitches in 4 innings.

He ought to be good for 6+ tonight.

I understand why everyone want to deal Bradley

but I’m going to miss him when he’s gone.

by Dr. Strange on May 9, 2008 8:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I sure don't want to deal him.

Unless we can get a starting pitcher who is consistent.

Hey, it could be worse...

by HighPlainsGrifter on May 9, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously

Only deal him if the price is right. Don’t just trade him to trade him.

by geetar85 on May 9, 2008 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

if he wasnt insanely injury prone

id want to sign him for 3-4 years.

but he is. can you really turn down a good prospect for a 30 year old who will likely miss huge parts of seasons from here out?

now, i dont want to just give him away from some meh prospect and to get rid of salary. but if someone sees him as the missing piece and offers a good prospect.. id be tempted.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

David Murphy

could probably use a day off pretty soon here.

by FirebatM3 on May 9, 2008 8:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Boggs too

I think he’s been in the lineup every day since his callup.

by lonestarJon on May 9, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boggs

he’s pretty hot, and he didn’t play everyday for OKC until about a couple of weeks into the season. Murph looks like he’s wearing down a bit.

by FirebatM3 on May 9, 2008 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Well, after smashing his knee earlier, he might be in line for one.

by lonestarJon on May 9, 2008 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Lewin's never heard anyone say pitching is less than 50% of the game, he's not paying attention.

Just about every self-respecting analyst will say it’s less than 50%. Defense is 50% of the game, and pitching is a large part of defense, but not 100%.

by philkid3 on May 9, 2008 8:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm to me pitching is about 90% of baseball.

because it it’s bad, you have NO chance whatsoever. But I’ve seldom heard of any number less than 70 or 80 %.

Hey, it could be worse...

by HighPlainsGrifter on May 9, 2008 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If people really believed that...

....pitchers would get 70-80% of a team’s total payroll. No one would ever trade a good pitcher straight up for a good hitter.

by Adam J. Morris on May 9, 2008 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I for one wouldn't.

Unless the rest of my pitching staff can cover the loss.

guys

we are in a seven game stretch where we face Bedard twice, Felix twice, Smith (who K’ed ten last time), Eveland (a lefty with an ERA of 3), and Harden.

Not everyone is going to have a lot of success at the plate for us. but I like the overall patience we are showing, and I like our ability to plate guys in scoring position so far.
