seriously
give murph a day off please, these lefties are killing him and boggs has a 900 something ops so far against them.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Probably
I’d lean towards sitting Murphy against the majority of lefties.
But it isn’t up to me.

Bob Brenly won a World Series. Was he a good manager?
No and no.

I remember in 05 or whenever we were in first for a while that thing had us at 75% pretty far into the season.

Is the game not on directv?
anyone else with the baseball package not seeing the channel the game is on?

Directv
Can’t find it either. 667 says it is blacked out on that channel and it is also not viewable on any other channels.
Such crap.
Unfortunately, No it's not
Not here in NC anyways. You know, because Oakland and Dallas are so close to NC that they had to black it out.
There’s a host of other games on in my MLB package that I GET to watch.

Pretty weak lineup
but it is time to drum up some trade interest in Byrd and Laird.
When we acquired Murphy, my first instinct was that he could platoon with Boggs, with Boggs playing against LHP. Now that they have both (somewhat) established themselves, it is Boggs we sit against lefties.
Odd.
FANTASY BASEBALL HELP!!!!
Seriously, putting the bias aside, should I start Greg Smith today? I have about 15 minutes to decide.
What are your other options?

Well he is on my roster
I can choose to start him or not. It is a roto league, not a head to head so I don’t have to start him but Smith has been money this year…
Well, he tossed 6.2 scoreless innings his last time out...
7 innings of 2-run ball the time before that… finnesse lefties usually puzzle us… bias aside, I’d say starting him makes a lot of sense.

We didn't exactly pound him the time we beat him
4 runs in 6 innings was all we got, and some of that came on a big homer. We kinda had to squeak past him that time, my guess is, it’ll be the same today.

Hate to bring it back up but,
Why is Murphy in the lineup instead of Boggs. Lewin just said that lefties are hitting .150 off this guy. I love Murphy, but this would of been a great day to get his day off.
He is
not a good “manager” but a really really good coach and a guy who players respect and want to play for.
And
given how Boggs has been hitting as of late, it really would make more sense for him to get in the game and give Murphy a day off. Its not like Murphy is losing his starting spot, but a rookie getting a day off every now and then isn’t a bad thing.

he's been good
but he hasn’t done anything to make me regret not giving him a gigantic bonus and a guaranteed spot on the 40 man roster.
Can you list a few guys
who have been as good as he has making their pitching debut in HA directly out of HS? I can’t come up with many, and unlike the typical aberration (who is more about polish than talent) we know his stuff is lights out.
Whether you want to couch it as regret or not, he is one of the couple best pitching prospects in baseball, and I would LOVE to have overpaid him and have him on our 40.

Three years from now
the refrain will be, “no one could have known he would be that good.”
by Brett Perryman on Jun 1, 2008 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions
It has nothing to do with me
Saying that is like saying “I’ll take Taylor Teagarden over Matt Wieters.” Is there some outside chance that Teagarden could be better than Wieters? Yes. How would a poll of informed opinions look in each case? about 95% the other guy. This is homerism.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 1, 2008 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions
I was referring more
To the “Three years from now the refrain will be, ‘no one could have known he would be that good.’”
You could very well be right, but to present your argument in such irrefutable terms is more than a little overbearing.
Also, not that I have any particular horse in the race (though of course I have a definite hope), I don’t think the difference is as dramatic as you have presented it.
For what it's worth
I don’t have a horse here either. I’m not mad at the Rangers for not taking the risk. But that’s partly because I didn’t realize that Porcello was this good. And in hindsight I wish they had. Again though, I’m not arguing this because I’m pissed that they didn’t roll the dice.
As far as the three years thing, that’s in reference to our Weaver discussion in the other thread. It’s the easy way to avoid admitting that you were wrong in the first place.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 1, 2008 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Just a question
As I don’t have the inclination to check out the thread you referenced:
Is that last paragraph referring to players with signability concerns? Otherwise, I’m not sure what other reason there could be that you don’t draft a guy.
Yes
My point there was that if a Hosmer or Crow or Alvarez started to fall, I didn’t see a lot of reason to think that the Rangers would be the team to stop it – mostly because I don’t think that any of the three will quite make it to 11, but also because the Rangers do not have a recent track record of picking off those guys. My citations are Weaver and Drew from 2004, Hochevar from 2005, Chamberlain from 2006 and Porcello from 2007. My point wasn’t that they are idiots for not doing it, just that they haven’t, and I don’t see what would be different about this year.
Each of those cases involved signability issues combined with outlandish demands.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 1, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh and
Meant to say, I can agree to somewhat disagree with someone who says that the risk still looks to great to them. But where I’m blown away is when someone a) says that what he’s done so far is not particularly impressive, and b) claims that they would take EITHER of our first rounders over him.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 1, 2008 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Just to clarify
I think what he’s done is impressive, but when you look at how great he is expected to be by some and the backlash the Rangers took for not drafting him, I think he has to start striking out a lot more batters before they can rightfully start saying “I told you we should have drafted him!”
What was his signing bonus
7 million or so and a guaranteed spot on the 40 man roster vs. a guy who has a lot of talent himself and is just as young. Both Beaven and Main are great enough talents to make me never regret not taking that enormous risk with Porcello.
hopefully
hopefully its not “we got to make a decision on this 22 year old because he is out of options and has only a handful of ML innings”
If the Tigers are in rebuilding mode it won’t matter because they can afford to keep him but if they are a contending team it will be a decision they will have a hard time making.
In three years we look to be a contending team and I wouldn’t want to be in that position. Look at how we were this year with Cruz, Botts, and Tejeda. And none of those guys are anywhere near the talent Porcello is and we are in a rebuilding year.
After his last start, he’s on a ‘ric roll.
Go Strangers.

“That’s a good play,” Cooper said of Berkman’s decision to bunt with the third baseman playing him deep. “That’s a baseball player’s play. It’s a nice job. We need baserunners. If you hit a ball out of a ballpark, I call them rally-killers when you get down like that. We need to keep a rally going, and that was a nice play to me.”

that was a really good investment on the part of the Rays. They got a big crowd out to the game, and showed the crowd that they can win a close game. That should get the interest of quite a few of those people that came out for the concert.

Well color me smarter now...
I had been thinking that no runs counted during a play when the third out was made… now I know better. Thanks.
The difference is that the batter reached safely (at least initially)
Say there is a guy on third, and two outs. If the batter grounds to deep short, and the guy on third crosses home before the out is made at first, the run won’t count.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
force out vs tag out
If the last out of the inning is on a tag play then any runs that score prior to the tag being applied count. If the last out is a force then no runs count.

as everyone moves up a base and the score is no 6-4 with 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. No real DP chance anymore which is very, very good news
Murphy safe at home
on a Cat ground ball. It was close, but Murphy slid in there and since there was no force out, Suzuki had to tag him. Cat of course safe at first base.
