Minors 6/1
I know many of you think I am a Hurley fanatic but another good game from the big fella. Here is his line after 7 innings today in Oklahoma.
7IP 4H 2ER 2BB 4K's
Hurley should probably have never taken the mound for the 8th. Here is his line when he was taken out in the 8th.
7.1IP 6H 5ER 3BB 4K's.
He was obviously very much fatigued.
Hurley has looked very impressive in his last 4 out of 5 starts. His new windup and offspeed are looking highly impressive. If he was pulled after the 7th his ERA would stand at 5.10 for the year. Instead, it's now at 5.56. This is still a far cry than his over 7.5 ERA earlier this year.
Other Minor League Notables:
Oklahoma City
Nelson Cruz connected on his 17th big fly today.
Botts and Duran both chipped in with doubles in their 1-4 efforts.
Frisco
MIchael Ballard had a hell of a ball game today. CG victory.
9IP 8H 1ER 0BB 8K's
Max had another dinger. Make that 14 on the year in a 1-3 effort today.
Casey Benjamin went 3-4 with a double and a HR.
Bakersfield
Off
Clinton
Blake Beavan: 7IP 6H 3R 2ER 1BB 1K

I think
his struggles at OKC are ultimately going to help him.
His pitch count was still reasonable (87 according to the box score) to let him go out there for the 7th inning. Thats pretty weak if you blame his bad 7th inning on fatigue.

Coolaid
I have no problem at all with him going out for the 8th. I was just saying with his early season struggles and his run of pretty good starts, it might be a good time to pull him out after the 7th and leave it to the bullpen and keep the confidence high. Just a thought. I meant nothing by it.

I
would have pulled him too since this has happened to Hurley before. This kind of this happened to Hurley a few starts earlier. Confidence is very important for young players so I would have pulled him after the 7th inning when he was having a very respectable start.

Ballard
Was at the game in Frisco today and Ballard had a great game. he was attacking the zone all day long. When he started the game with a 3 pitch strike-out I could see we were in for a treat. The Arkansas guys, other than the Maddox guy, were having issues all day with him. I lost track of how many K’s he had and am actually surprised he only had 8 (which is still pretty damned good).
Frostad played Catcher with Max playing 1st. Max didn’t have a lot to do at first really and showed he could at least field the position.
Also, with Teagarden’s struggles as of late in OKC, would it make sense to switch out Max and Tea? Or are the Rangers committed to Max at 1st?

Typically you don't demote players
I cannot see anyway Teagarden is sent back to Frisco unless he completely goes in the tank. I thought promoting him when we did was kind of silly, but now that he is in OKC, he is there to stay.

IIRC
the goal was to have him at AAA to start off the yr but w/ salty’s struggles they started him at AA instead

As disappointing as it is
to see the early struggles for Davis and Teagarden, I think we owe it to them to let them adjust, as they have proven capable of in the past, and elevate their game to the next level of play.
That said, it would be nice to see what Max can do in AAA. I shudder to think of the offense Frisco would run out without him, though.
