Happy birthday, Floyd Bannister
Happy birthday to former Ranger (and former #1 overall pick) Floyd Bannister. I'm pretty sure he is the only #1 overall draft pick from Pierre, South Dakota. Bannister is 53 today.
Bannister spent most of his career with the M's and Astros, being a mild disappointment for a #1 overall draftee. And he spent his final season (1992) in the Rangers bullpen, not pitching well. That Ranger team included such immortals as Mario Diaz, Ray Stephens, Edwin Nunez, Mike Campbell, Steve Fireovid, Russ McGinnis, and the Doug Davis Who Wasn't A Pitcher.
He's also the father of current Royals starter Brian Bannister.

Sorry AJM
But this just doesn’t have the same random shock value as the Scarbourough Green birthday piece.
I mean, happy birthday to Floyd and all, but zzzzz…..

Pierre, South Dakota
Not only is Floyd Bannister the only #1 overall pick born in Pierre, South Dakota – he’s also the only MLB player ever who was born in Pierre, South Dakota.

I didn't realize
He was top 10 in a number of categories for a few years.

Russ McGinnis
One of a handful of Rangers (Butch Davis, Gerald Alexander, few others) whose effectiveness here I’ve admittedly embellished in my own mind. My own little Urban Myths.

Mine is Doug Strange
He hit a home run to win a game when I was 13 or something and I’ll forever think of him as a great, underappreciated Ranger.

good list
for me it is Lou Frazier. I actually knew he sucked when he played but I always thought his blistering speed was just under utilized.

Huson
When I was in college, the Rangers caravan came to Austin and among the contingent were Nolan Ryan and Jeff Huson. Every Q from the crowd was for Nolan, not unexpectedly. So I raised my hand and thanked Huson for the play he made on Rickey’s check swing with one out in the ninth to preserve Nolan’s no-hitter.
Nolan stood up from his chair on the stage, look over five feet at Huson, and began to slowly clap.
It started an auditorium-wide standing O.

I wasn’t listening, but I can only imagine.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

...I’m not overly optimistic about BB being an important part of a championship team but I hope he has a better career than Butch.

More sparedom from the 1992 roster
Scott Chiamparino, Dickie Thon, Donald Harris, and Al “Happy Man” Newman.
Newman had one career home run in 2,107 at-bats. That’s got to be some kind of record.

Jeff Frye
he came to visit the pony league on the east side of Fort Worth when he was on the DL with a torn up leg. My daughter had a big time crush on him then. She might have been 11 at the time. He was a very nice man.

also came to a Sporting Goods store in my hometown for a signing. He is a tiny dude. He also hit a triple in his first AB in the majors in a game against Cleveland that I was at.
