Lineup

I. Kinsler
M. Young
J. Hamilton
M. Bradley
D. Murphy
M. Byrd
F. Catalanotto
G. Laird
R. Vazquez

Uh, why is laird starting? Hes played in 3 consecutive games as it is with a 3rd base.

salty can play a day game after a night game with all the rest hes got =\

Salty

I imagine since he worked with Hurley this year in OKC they want him working with him tomorrow. Its a day game. He will probably play the next couple days.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 11, 2008 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

his normal start would be today and tomorrow

if he had been grinding it out all week i wouldnt want him playing a day game after a night game, but he hasnt played since saturday.

we need to trade a catcher. i dont care who.

Bring up Justin Smoak

by DShep on Jun 11, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I damn well care whom.

Laird needs to go. He’s older, less upside, and not under team control for as long. We just have to wait a month or so till the trade deadline.

by Hull Fan on Jun 11, 2008 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

i certainly prefer salty to laird

but the two situations are…

trade laird for a mid level return, start salty.
upside: Possible all star level production offensively, could get into a groove defensively
downside: Less trade return, teagarden in an odd position

trade salty for high level return, start laird and have teagarden backing up late this year, starting next year.
upside: the high return, clears up long term situation a bit.
downside: lose the player with the highest potential in our catcher mix.

so yeah, im saying as a whole i dont really care which way we go, but on a 1:1 salty/laird… yeah.

Bring up Justin Smoak

by DShep on Jun 11, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

and salty rested the day after he went 3/3 with a homerun and 2 walks...

2 and 2 is barley ok as it is, dont mess with it and give someone 4 days off in a row.

Then everyone wonders

why the hell he’s not throwing anyone out. Damn, I wish they would trade him!

by 525DP on Jun 11, 2008 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I really

am beginning to doubt that. Another thing is, Jarrod knows Kyle very well. Caught him alot in the Braves org and knows how and what he throws. I have a pretty good feeling whats going on but for now I’ll just say can’t quite understand it.

by 525DP on Jun 11, 2008 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

If we really wanted to be able to tee off on Davies, a pitcher who is pitching way over his head right now, his catcher from the Atlanta days would be a good bet to be able to help with that. I really don’t understand why Laird is starting today.

by Gdawg on Jun 11, 2008 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I really like Salty

I hope he will be a fixture for the Rangers for a long time. I will say this if the Rangers didn’t like him I don’t think they would have traded for him. I think they are trying to build Laird’s trade value up before the dead line.

"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley

by boomer1 on Jun 11, 2008 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Salty

Didn’t the Rangers say when this platoon first started that Laird would stay with Padilla? And that they would work the schedule around it if it fell on one of Saltys days? He’s not gonna ride the bench all year long. If Laird wasn’t producing there would be a valid argument but as it is we have a luxury many teams would kill for. We have 2 catchers producing more than you could ask for one being one of the top prospects in baseball. Its one game people get over it

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 11, 2008 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Only 1 pitcher has that power

and its Millwood who Laird catches exclusively. Padilla likes to throw to Jarrod.

by 525DP on Jun 11, 2008 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

my bad

I went back and searched and found it is Millwood who Laird will stay with. Ponson was Saltys. Like I said earlier I don’t think its too much of a stretch to think that now with Hurley up, who Salty caught in OKC this year and figures to catch in the future, that the Rangers want to pair them two. With tomorrow being a day game they want to give Salty more rest. Yeah I know he has sat but a day game after a night game is tough on a catcher.

Why is Laird Starting?

Maybe b/c he’s playing pretty well right now.
Maybe b/c Salty can’t throw any base stealers out.

by coachh on Jun 11, 2008 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Well maybe if the pitchers could hold

runners it would make his job a bit easier? Millwood holds runners better than any pitcher we have and Laird works with him.

Laird: .286/.318/.429
Salty: .357/.471/.571

Throwing out would be base stealers is only a small part of being a catcher.

Stats?

Go look at just how awful Salty is at throwing out would be runners. And most baseball people would argue that is a much more important stat for catchers. You can’t turn singles into doubles for a pitching staff like ours. I do like Salty as a player, but he needs to improve on his “gun” or move to 1B or DH. Which I envision him probably as a DH next year, who will spell the catcher from time to time.

by coachh on Jun 11, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

there are yearly all stars who cant throw anyone out.

and salty will be another one when he gets a couple seasons under his belt, with the rangers or otherwise.

Bring up Justin Smoak

by DShep on Jun 11, 2008 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

there is a supposed 2-2 system

that would be the point.

salty has been fine. at laird’s caught stealing percentage, salty would have thrown out 10 more runners.
if laird had salty’s obp, he would have been on base 11 more times.

that was easy.
