let's fill this one up so that we get the third one up in the 7th
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.
How does Hurley look?
See he’s given up 2 bombs already….. Only at 59 pitches though.
Not the only black poster on LSB.
4 hits, 1 hit batsman, 0 walks in 5 ip.
nothing wrong with that.
unfortunately 2 of the hits happened to be HRs on poor pitches.
some good, some bad. theres reason for optimism.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Mixed bag
He’s grooving a lot of pitches, and he’s gotten away with a few since this is the Royals. But his stuff looks pretty decent, he just needs to keep it outta the middle of the plate.
He's grooving a lot of fastballs
but has good movement and velocity.

Hamilton's been pulling off the outside pitches lately.
needs to get back to the Hammy of yestermonth and start driving those pitches to left center.
Rally Turtles...
Have helped us all year…then they dont a few times and you give up on them. When the turtles are in a slump, you stay behind them. Hamilton is in a slump, do you want to ban him too? Viva la pictures!!!
it was a KC only rule =)
Im the creator of rally turtles! Of course i support them hehe.
But yeah, obviously its all just for fun. Perhaps something changed…. we will see in the 6th.

...gun had hurley @ 94 on the gun last inning…
i will say, he’s sweating like crazy out there…

just got here
really excited i dont have work and i can see the hurlers debut.
does anyone really hate bill land
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
I saw that last night
JOsh said it was mist blowing in from the fountains
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
no i see it too. but i think its just that camera angle
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
Watching hurley
i can see a very danks like progression. Rough this year, turning into a #2 type guy next year.
Bring up Justin Smoak
i think his k rate was like 8.5 in the minors
isnt that usually turn out as like 7 in the majors? 3 in 5 sounds about right.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Ohh boy, I love that slider
Wicked. That was a good inning, he pretty much kept everything out of the middle of the plate. Very nice.
Through five
Hurley – 77 Pitches, 5hits, 3 K’s, 0 BB’s
Ground outs – 1
Fly Outs – 11 ouch

Good pitch count for Hurley
77 pitches through 5 inning. 66% for strikes. Excellent.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
its homeruns + walks that really doom a pitcher
if he can avoid the walks he can withstand some HRs…
lookin good on the front today.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Well, Cat hasn't hit well lately
I guess they could have put Byrd there after the game he had last night, but with Vazquez taking the day off, Boggs makes a certain amount of sense.
Anyone who's watched him in the minors...
do his flyball outs usually look like moonshots? I swear, with every flyball he’s gotten, they look like they’re headed out off the bat.
He's been a mixed bag today
He’s thrown a lot of strikes (zero walks) but he’s groved some pitches, some of which he’s gotten away with. But his stuff looks pretty good, especially the slider – he just needs to work on keeping it down and out of the gearbox.
Good bite, IMO
Of course, I’m no scout, but I think it’s pretty good. That’s definitely his best pitch.
good and bad
pretty good stuff, velocity increased from 89 to 93 after a couple innings.
good control as far as throwing strikes, but really in the heart of the zone a few times resulting in HRs.
got hurt on some mistake pitches.
not great, but definitely some things to work from.
Bring up Justin Smoak
so he's pitching a bit as if he can make mistakes to AAA hitters?
he has no BBs…that’s fantastic. Does he work fast?
Rangers > Nationals...for now
yeah you could say that.
hes not working at a lightning fast pace, but certainly not too slow. hes moving along.
Bring up Justin Smoak
he's no Padilla, then
thanks for the info.
Yeesh…sounded like another grooved 2 strike pitch to Buck?
Rangers > Nationals...for now
well
i’d imagine bannister is done but htey could have made him work a bit more that inning.

manage him to succeed
I would pull him now. A good start to build on.
Hurley 6IP 6H 4ER 0BB 3K 2HR
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
At least he isn't walking anybody...
He may be getting beat around a bit, but God knows it’s nice to watch a Ranger game where a pitcher can actually keep the ball around the strike zone…
he starts the nest inning
but i dont think he finishes it
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
HILLMAN plays the game the right way.
dont you wish we had him. maybe him and nolan could just have little “good baseball men” tea partys
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
It's either that
or turn it over that bullpen
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
id like to see the rangers get a run so that
hurley gets a win
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.
he went to the opposite ifeld last at bat.
an out though.
his 3 at bats that i remember are
3-2, single
3-2, out
2-2 + foul, strikeout.
thats what i like to see…. multiple hits or no.
Bring up Justin Smoak
If this is all Hurley is for us this year
I still like it. A guy who gives up a few runs but can eat innings and doesn’t walk people is what you want out of the back end of your rotation. God knows our bullpen will appreciate it.
Hurley....
He is doing a lot better than I thought he would.
Ive only been watching for a few innings, but this guy is legit.

want to sneak up on John Buck with a pipe wrench and just beat him until his body no longer quivers?
he seems like a jackass.
Hillman really didn't have a choice
He was trying to squeeze out another inning from Bannister because his bullpen is severely overworked.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
should have brought up their elizardo ramirez
so we would be winning instead of tied.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Whats funny is...
People on this site were crying and getting pissed of about the Rangers not hiring Hillman.
What now?

Gave the Rangers 6 innings and no walks. Not to mention dude is only 22 he will get better.
"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley
he didnt really have to work at all
cruised through the game, just happened to give up some hrs. those hrs will continue to be a problem, but better that than struggling for 7 innings 120 pitches 5 walks or something.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Yeah
I actually would rather have a pitcher who throws strikes and misses bats while giving up some homers than a groundball nibbler who walks people and gives up a bunch of dinkus hits, myself.
me too.
Danks gave up quite a few homers last year, but he looks to have that under control this year. Hope for the same progression by Hurley.
He did much better than I thought (was afraid) he would
love the no walks.

"Boy, that is a gutless, 6-foot-7, .200-hitting formerly good player. What a joke." -Tom Grieve RE: Richie Sexson
im summarizing him a lot today =p
started off the game at 89 mph with his fastball, but was quickly 93-94 in the third and after.
never had really long painful at bats or anything, just threw it up there. no walks. lots of flyballs, 2 of them went out for the 4 runs.
it was a solid starting point, but yeah… hes going to have to leave fewer pitches in the middle of the zone against a HR hitting team.
Bring up Justin Smoak
6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
92 pitches, 63 strikes. 3 groundouts, 12 flyouts.
He looked good, threw a lot of strikes and broke off a few nice sliders. He did leave too many pitches in the middle of the plate, but overall, that was a great debut.
thats shocking.

i don't get why this isn't a valid complaint
hamilton has a better arm. if you call him off, you better get it there on time.
Rare Gnats Sex
Actually
My point is I knew people would complaint about Byrd’s throw since he called off the savior Josh Hamilton, even though Byrd’s throw was very good.
JD drinks the Angels milkshake.
the point is
he should never ever ever call off hamilton unless they have a throwing contest and he proves he has a better arm – which he doesn’t
Rare Gnats Sex
why call off the guy that has a better arm?
and it wasn’t a perfect throw. it wasn’t on time and it was up the third base line

if we lose bradley it doesn’t really matter, we always find a new hitter that does good unexpectedly
how many years in a row has he been healthy again
He’s sky high right now—trade value will never be higher
this
is the kind of game the seperates a good team from a mediocre team
we are a mediocre team bro.
just be glad we have not regressed to bad yet.

i know
we are mediocre thats why i said that
Can we send down the bullpen
sans Everyday and CJ?
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
Hahaha I love that sig.
Haven’t seen it before now. Very nice.

Probably a couple of them for sure...
I am glad Mathis is back in the pen for now, and the one guy I want to see by the ASB is Madrigal. His numbers are stout and he could do well in a setup role perhaps.

Yea
Sometime in his career, I can’t remember when, he used a red bat and really liked the color but he’s a Louisville Slugger guy so he called them up and asked if they could make him some red bats and the rest is history.
I was looking for some action, but all I found were cigarettes and alcohol.
Let's trade Bradley to the Royals.
For Mahay and a really awesome minor league pitcher. Or Greinke.
Yeah I’m just making stuff up, sorry.

Also, I just wanna say...
Hurley had some good stuff today. Made a couple of mistakes with the pitches that went out, but I was very impressed overall. What did you guys think?

Looked good in spots
Looked homer prone a bit. Which is not an issue if he learns the league and the hitters, and those weren’t the mistake pitches anybody can hit out. No one game diagnosis though, let’s see how he acclimates.

I think
That he did good. He needs improvement on keeping his pitches out of the center of the plate, but other than that, I really liked the way he pitched today.
Because of his outing, I’m actually feeling like we won this game today.
Throwing strikes...
Can’t complain… He’s just gotta take the lumps and learn from them…
Zero walks is more encouraging than 2 HRs are discouraging…
And he kept his pitch count relatively low, which is nice…
Good first outing. Cannot complain.
bradley
should have pinch hit for shelton. they could have moved salty to first and brought laird in to catch. guy leading the league in obp to lead off the inning would have been nice.
prolly over wash’s head though
Wash fell into the classic trap
Of trying to save his best bench player for when somebody reached base. But unfortunately, he didn’t take into account the fact that you have to get somebody on base before you can worry about having somebody drive them in.
It’s a classic mistake for over-conservative managers like Wash, who try to micro-manage everything.
IMO
Wash is a HORRIFIC in-game decision-maker. Other than that, he’s a great manager. But he is awful at making good choices in the middle of the game. He’s not very good at putting a solid line up together when his good hitters need a day off either. Going to an NL park scares me a little in that respect.

Well, I agree
But I would think that kinda means he’s a poor manager, wouldn’t you?
Yes, he’s a nice guy and a good coach, but if he can’t make in-game decisions correctly, or efficiently manage his lineup or his bullpen, then he’s not actually managing well. Another thing is, he doesn’t take charge and actively argue enough on behalf of his players during games. The only guy I’ve seen him actually get out there and defend is Milton Bradley, but the rest of the guys seem to be pretty much on their own when they have beefs with the umpires.
I still say Matt Walbeck should be managing this team, and Ron should be on the third base line. The team may be playing well enough to overcome most of Wash’s mistakes these days, but I do think they could do a little better without all his nonsensical decisions.
Semantics, semantics
the manager means very little. If he keeps Mitlon Bradley productive and happy till teh Deadline and keeps Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler, et all happy during the season and don’t burn through his young players, he’s a good enough manager.
Seriously, this team has way bigger problems than worrying what Ron is going to do.
"classic situation"
of course. I’m sure you got that from 30 years of watching baseball. you know all about classic managerial faux paux’s. he “micromanaged” the game by NOT PH’ng. Seems like a new one but I get it. He’s just in over his head but you knew that PHng Bradley was the right thing to do.
Rare Gnats Sex
second guessing
PH bradley for vasquez. lets say you end up with a run. Then you have to bring in vasquez for the bottom of the 9th – a PH batter that you just lost. Now you only have laird, and you pretty much have to keep him
Instead, use vasquez to get on base. then you can PH Bradley for Boggs, Murphy or Byrd.
Vasquez OBP vs. RH’s: about 420
Bradley OBP vs. RH’s: 419
Those numbers have sample size problems and vasquez isn’t that good but the point is that right now, he’s pretty decent against RH’s. and using him doesn’t screw up your bench.
Now, given all that, is it soooo stupid that he did what he did?
Rare Gnats Sex
i wanted him to PH for shelton originally, not vazquez
and was the reaction really sooooooooo extreme?
oh god, i and others wondered aloud why our hottest and arguably best hitter was on the bench in a one run game. how absurd.
round and round we go.

yep that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense no matter how you spin it.

Here
Milton Bradley has put up a
.286 .410 .446 .856 line on the road this year. Still great, but not exactly the awesome unstoppable line he has at home. In fact, it’s startling similar to this line .316 .409 .421 .830, which is Chris Shelton’s June numbers.
None of this actually matters, because pinch hitters hit something like .200/.220/.300 in the AL. The game was lost when Frankie sucked. End of story.
and even though you said you wanted Guardado
there really wasn’t an option better than Frankie.
No second guessing involved except Frankie’s pitch selection
Rare Gnats Sex
PH for shelton
and then who takes over at 1st? I guess you would use salty to cover 1st and then laird would have to come in for catcher so you are out a back up catcher. and your bench is down to vasquez. Slightly better but a little risky with the catcher situation.
but, in the end, how much better than what wash did? not much. about the same, and wash’s plan allows you to be more flexible in later innings.
and look above and below – everyone sees this as some holy grail evidence of wash not knowing what he is doing. except they’re wrong and besides a simplistic understanding of PH’ng, don’t know what the F is going on.
Rare Gnats Sex
and salty as far as i know
hasn’t taken any reps at 1st this year. Can duran play 1st?
Rare Gnats Sex
the likelihood is that noone has to play first
if it worked out and we tied the game based on that pinch hit, i think we could find a way.
salty could certainly play first base for an inning or two. hell, gerald laird could play first base for an an inning. ANYONE can play first base for a couple innings. its not exactly the most challenging position/
but, if you want to go deeper, chris shelton shouldnt have been in the game in the first place. when there are 2 outs and cat is on deck, why substitute him before he is actually up? if he had waited to see if cat would actually have had to face the lefty there, they could have kept cat in defensively, then pinch hit with bradley and played shelton at first in the bottom of the ninth and on if it had gotten there.
Bring up Justin Smoak
and that
might be a valid complaint. Although I probably would let Cat hit against a righty. i’m not sure that Shelton was substituted for while Cat was on deck. I don’t think you have to announce a substitution unless someone actually comes to the plate. So, it’s more an issue that Shelton shouldn’t have been a defensive substitution, but this is also a game where Cat made a bad play at 1st (though I think it was fine).
But still, don’t think it was an egregious error that represents a fatal flaw – just another way to go.
