On Mendoza and Gabbard
The Rangers website has an item up on Luis Mendoza and Kason Gabbard. Gabbard is getting called up on Saturday to take over for Doug Mathis in the rotation. Mathis is supposedly heading back to the bullpen, but they are going to have to send someone down to make room for Gabbard, and unless they option Josh Rupe, Mathis would seem to be the most likely candidate.
There's also some discussion of Mendoza's return from his shoulder problem, with a lack of strength after his injury apparently being blamed for his first two awful appearances. Oklahoma manager Bobby Jones has praise for how Mendoza has pitched his last couple of times out, and it sounds like Mendoza could be on track to get back to Texas before too terribly long.

Maybe they could option Ron Washington and get a big league manager that can actually make good decisions with the players he has

Perhaps
but what we really need to do right now, is to DFA a whole bunch of posters and get people whose opinions doesn’t suck.

so i guess
your in favor of Vasquez hitting over Bradley in the 9th inning of a game that you are down by 1 run!

so dont do it
why does it bother you if other people do?
and it was a 1 run game, every batter is important in the ninth. a double and a single and boom, tie game.

Pinch hitting
is perhaps teh most overrated aspect of baseball right now. Yeah, a good hitter is a good hitter regardless of what he does, but at bat per at bat, there’s really very little difference.
Add in Bradley’s road performance(good, but not ungodly), and I don’t really see teh point of bitchign about a move that was at best static. I would have liked to see bradley, but it’s pretty dumb to act like it’s some big deal that we didn’t see him.

so, again, dont do it.
if you have a problem with people voicing their opinions on in game moves in a game reaction thread, thats your problem not theirs/mine.
the actual importance of bradley pinch hitting is debatable, but DUMB to want to see our best hitter in the 9th down 1? reallly?

Then by all means
keep it in the game-thread. This is a thread about Mendoza and Gabbard. It’s not a time to come out and start second guessing thanks to the powers of hindsight.

my discussion here is on
calling a bunch of people stupid over it, not the highly debatable position of how much it actually would have helped.
i dont care about 18 at bats in june and road splits, milton bradley is a better hitter than chris shelton or ramon vazquez, and trying to prove otherwise with some stats is a major reach. And I think you know he is.
rather you think 1 at bat would have made a difference or not, its well within reason to want one of your best hitters to bat during the ninth inning of a 1 run game. the only reason the discussion continued past 10 minutes after the game is this right here and now ab03 bringing it up again in the other thread, there was no 50 person outrage for 2 hours post game or something ridiculous.

not with you
but there were enough people questioning it that it needed to be addressed. It’s become a pasttime for certain LSB’ers to criticize moves whether they are warranted or not.
and even your interpretation is pretty simplistic. There is a problem with PH’ng your best bat when that bat happens to only be able to play one position and probably shouldn’t play the OF at all, and your bench only has 2 other people on it (and isn’t all that flexible).

doesn’t reflect who’s the better hitter. It reflects practically nothing, except for maybe (MAYBE) who is hotter at the moment. At the moment, Chris Shelton is inexplicably hotter.

Yeah
that’s because judging things in hindsight is unfair, and often stupid. It’d be one thing if it is something everyone agreed on – like Chris Young trade was dumb. It’s something completely different when it’s a trade that was pretty even at the time of occurrance – like the John Danks trade, and the sides were unbalanced afterwards.
Evaluating in hindsight is stupid, whether it is a deal that you won (Gagne trade, which was not universally excellent, and I still maintain that we probably could have gotten more value) or one that you lost (Danks trade). It’s the sign of laziness and idiocy.
You know, why do I bother? Here’s the reader’s digest version:
You’re a twat whose only takes come straight from the mouth (anus?) of Randy Galloway. Your only arguments are based on surface stats that mean very little, and you can’t seem to wrap your head around explanations when people give their explanations. Die in a fire, thanks.

Hate Galloway
and their uber GAY “texttoy”.
P1-Day1 Buddy…
at anyrate the point is that just because someone is voicing their opinion after something happens doesnt make it “hindsight”.
Some were for the Danks trade…others were against it and they have a right to come back now and REITERATE their point of view. DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE DORK?
According to you the only time “hindsight” is allowed is on occasions when “everyone agreed” like the CY trade?
Like assholes are my opinions and I’ll voice them before, during, and after the issue at hand you blogoshere Nazi…..Now you sir may kindly go and get your fuckin shinebox!

by red shoe ranger on Jun 12, 2008 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not hindsight shouldn't be used to judge trades
EVER.
Hindsight is something that you occassionally use to kick yourself over. Like, boy, I really wish I bought those Rangers season tickets.
The best method of trade evaluation is “Did you get value for it?”
In the case of Young/A-Gon for Eaton/Aki? No, you didn’t. You got a decent reliever and an injury prone starter that got injured.
The case of Danks and McCarthy wasn’t so clear cut, but generally, McCarthy was a better pitcher in the minors, and he had majors experience. There was value there, and the exchange, as bad as it looks now, looked decent back then.
Hindsight is the tool that causes people like Galloway to become popular, because they can come out and write “Boy, that was a bad trade looking back.” That’s stupid. That’s what you’re doing. It’s annoying and non-productive, cause while hindsight is fun for internet arguments, they’re not very useful.
If your front office keeps getting lesser value during trades, you have a problem. If some guys get injured, well, you got bad luck. Sorry.
We’re done here.

Look douche
Milton Bradley has put up a
.286 .410 .446 .856 line on the road this year. Still great, but not exactly the awesome unstoppable line he has at home. In fact, it’s startling similar to this line .316 .409 .421 .830, which is Chris Shelton’s June numbers.
Given that, and he was going against Joaquin Soria, one of the best closers in the majors, no it wouldn’t have made a big difference eitehr way. I still think he might have been a good choice to use for Duran, but Vazquez was quite hot anyways, and Milton will haev to play the field in NY. I see the idea behind not bringing him in.

Shelton had been brought in in the 8th. Wash knew he would have to hit so if he had been afraid of him hitting he would have waited and PH for Cat then brought Shelton in to play D. Now once you get to Duran I see no problem with Vasquez PH for him. Vasquez has been one of our hotter hitters and plays 3B so instead of burning 2 players by PH Bradley and then playing RV on D you use RV to PH and save Bradley in case you need him for Boggs

bench
we only have a limited bench to begin with. We had already used Shelton. Vasquez went for Duran. Bradley can only play OF and was probably gonna PH for Boggs if we got that far. That leaves who? Laird and …......
So you want to PH Bradley for Shelton which means who would play 1B in the bottom of the 9th? Vasquez maybe. OK then you would have to PH Vasquez for Duran and use Laird at 3B. Well guess what that leaves absolutely nobody on the bench in case the game does go into extras and someone gets hurt.

Does name calling make you feel better? I don’t mind. It is more a reflection of yourself and I don’t take it personally.
So it is OK that Washington didn’t use Bradley yesterday because of possible position problems in the bottom of the 9th? If it were a tie game then OK, save Bradley. But not when you are down 1 with your best hitter sitting on the bench.

Hasn’t he only gone 4 innings the last two times out? Has it been because of high pitch counts or has he been on pitch limits? I would guess he would have to wait until after the AS break before getting another shot.

Ha! I've stood next to the guy.
He’s most definitely not thin. He’s a beast, and he will eat you in two bites if you cross him.

that looked like it was in on his hands
and the announcers suggested it was quite a long homerun.
pretty impressive.

Mac or XP?
I can’t scroll around on my Mac becasue the video has to load up to the point you are trying to scroll to but on my XP I can scroll around and it will usually take ~5 sec to load.

Davis will not be up here before Mayberry

It all depends on
who gets traded and when.
by FirebatM3 on Jun 12, 2008 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well
its a lot easier just to can shelton. you’d actually have to trade somebody in the OF (I would think) to bring Mayberry up

JMJ is 1b and OF though

how can you say that...?
1B = Davis has Blalock, Shelton and Cat ahead of him. Shelton isn’t in our long-term plans, Cat is playing out of position (and it showed in last night’s game) and could quite possibly be traded, and Blalock isn’t even back healthy yet. And we know we’re going to probably trade him if he does come back to health.
OF = Mayberry has Hamilton, Bradley, Murphy, Boggs and Byrd ahead of him. Hamilton and Murphy aren’t going anywhere, Boggs hasn’t proven that he needs more AAA, and the front office apparently LOVES Byrd. Oh…then there’s a fella by the name of Nelson Cruz, who absolutely owns AAA right now. You have to think he’ll get a chance before they throw JMJ to the wolves. Barring a Milton Bradley trade, which is about 50% I would say, AND an injury to one of our other outfielders, there is NO way Mayberry gets called up this year.
I’d say there’s much greater of a chance that Davis comes up, especially since he’s absolutely murdered the ball at every level. Mayberry is a nice story, and he was a high draft pick, but he’s got to sustain it a little bit longer before we bring him up.

OF
Considering Milton’s both an injury and a trade candidate, and that Cruz optimistically profiles as a ML 4th OF, and that Boggs might be better suited for AAA everyday play, and that Byrd has done nothing but increase his trade value since the winter, and even that Hamilton could get hurt if pattern holds…there’s some flux.
This will be an interesting trade deadline. A lot of interesting positional depth for JD to juggle…

Agreed.
Mayberry can play 1B or OF. He needs to be 40’d after this season, and Davis does not.
Plus, Mayberry’s swing has already been re-tooled. Davis… uhh… has a few holes, but to quote Mr. Baseball, “Ball can’t seem to find it.”

by the way...regarding Chris Davis:
how is his defense at 1B coming along? I remember he was struggling at 3B…any word?

He's an excellent defensive 1B.
He seems to have a few issues with balls hit hard at him (probably why he struggled at third), but he prevents far more errors (picks, stretching, footwork, etc.) than he causes.
