A little Ballard action.

In 64.1 IP this season, Michael Ballard has given up 32 runs (30 earned) on 81 hits and 21 walks (1.59 WHIP) while striking out 41 hitters (5.74 K/9 IP).

If you take out the May 9 disaster, you get 61.2 IP, 22 runs (20 earned - 2.91 ERA) on 71 hits and 19 walks (1.46 WHIP) with 40 strikeouts (5.84 K/9 IP).

In his last three starts (against three different opponents), Ballard has rattled off 21.2 IP allowing only 3 runs (1.25 ERA) on 21 hits and 3 walks (1.11 WHIP) while striking out 16 (6.65 K/9 IP).

Here's a really basic scouting report to shed some light on those numbers.

Star-divide

Fastball: typically 88-90 MPH with a little arm-side run. By itself, it's not terribly effective, but when he mixes his pitches, he can throw it by people. Usually locates it well, but when he's not, the hitters let you know.

Cut fastball: *recent addition* seems to be in the 86-88 MPH range. This has improved the effectiveness of his 4-seam fastball. Lately, he's shown great command of the pitch. It is surely a large factor in his recent success.

Curve ball: typically a mid-to-upper 70s offering. An excellent pitch that is sometimes a swing-and-miss pitch. Definitely an out pitch for him. It's a plus pitch most nights, and plus-plus on others.

Change up: usually around 80-82. Tonight he threw lots of strikes with it. He'll need this to get righties out at the next level. It's an average offering, but he throws it with good arm speed. If he can find the right tweak on it, it could become above-average.

Slider: this one is a little tough to pick up. Typically in the range between his change up and cut fastball (82-85 MPH). Right now, it's not a featured offering, but he uses it effectively to keep hitters off balance. It works well in both fastball and curve ball counts.

- - - - - -

Lately, he's been mixing his pitches extremely well and commanding everything. His stuff isn't overwhelming and his reliance on his curve is Gabbard-esque. He throws just a tick harder than Kason Gabbard, who I think is a very good player comparison for Ballard - the main difference being the command and ability to throw 5 pitches for strikes.

His 5-pitch mix is the key to his success right now. If one of the pitches doesn't work at the next level, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts.

I don't think it will be long before he's in the Redhawk rotation.

Given that he is a lefty and has a 5 pitch repertoire

I want to see a few more strikeouts and fewer hits, especially for the AA level. Neverthless, it’s nice to see at least one plus pitch, do you think there is any potential of developing another plus pitch?

by Telegraph on Jun 13, 2008 1:49 AM CDT reply actions

Well, that's the thing...

His 5-pitch mix is why he’s successful. If you take away a pitch, he won’t be as successful. If you improve a pitch, he won’t need (or use) 5.

His best chance at another plus pitch is his change up. It’s got potential because he’s been locating it very well. If he can get it to fade or fall a little bit more, it could become plus.

Thanks

The reason why I am asking is that I think this is what happens in the big leagues. Quite a few lefties came up with 5 pitch repertoires, but they don’t keep all 5 pitches. I don’t think the deception is enough to consistently get big league hitters out, so the ones that stay develop a second plus pitch (which consequentially mean they don’t need all 5 pitches any longer). I am hoping this would be case with Ballard.

This sort of amplifies the Gabbard comparison...

because if he gets to that point, it will be his change up and curve ball that carry him there.

Keep in mind

last nights game (^12) was against the worst team in the Texas League, Corpus Cristi.

Ballard

is nothing special. His stuff is all over the place.

All over the place?

I’m willing to bet that since you’ve never seen Elvis Andrus play, you’ve never seen Michael Ballard pitch.

Please elaborate.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 13, 2008 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I watched

him last night….

And Andrus can barely hit a ball out of the infield…

and the elaboration is where?

What do you mean all over the place?

Was he walking guys? No.
Was he missing his spots? No.
Was he falling behind hitters? No.
Was he giving up a ton of hits? No.

Consider me confused.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 13, 2008 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

He doesn't

have any overpowering stuff. His location isn’t that good. His stuff was all over the place, he got lucky that the hitters were terrible. That CCH team is really bad.

Will he ever be a big league starter? No way.

You just used "all over the place" to define "all over the place"...

You’re like a bad dictionary. Explain “all over the place” because the colloquial definitions of “all over the place” don’t fit with what Ballard did last night.

His location

of his pitches are bad, he can’t fool hitters.

he can’t fool hitters.

Thats why he only gave up 4 hits in 7 ip, right?

Please don’t give me the bullshit that Corpus Christi sucks. If a pitcher can’t fool hitters than he is going to give up more than 4 hits in 7 innings.

That

4.20 ERA in AA looks really good, doesn’t it?

he’s the clear front-runner for Texas League pitcher of the month with a 0.83 ERA while giving the Riders 21.2 innings through three starts.

Being a contrarian for contrary's sake

is useless if you don’t have an argument to make or if the argument you are making has no basis.

Andrus put 5 balls in play last night...

3 of them left the infield.
1 was a come-backer to the pitcher.
1 was a foul out to 1B.

So… based on your extensive Andrus-watching experience – during which Andrus gets the ball past the infield 60% of the time – you’ve determined that he barely gets it out there? Just wow.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 13, 2008 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

He

has a terrible eye, he swings at terrible pitches that he shouldn’t even consider. That foul ball was pathetic, looked like a little league kid hit that. He got lucky on a few dinky singles that any other time he would have been out.

I think...

I’ll go with MJH’s thoughts on Ballard instead of miles.

I watched the game too…and it seems miles doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

first the Giants, now the Celtics.

Heh, which MLB team is doing well that Miles thinks sucks? May as well hand them the WS now.

You also predicted that...

we’d all be eating our words when Jason Kidd leads the Mavericks to the 2008 NBA Championship.

Jason Kidd rules!!!!!! He makes everyone better, except the team!

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 14, 2008 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

woah.

it’s still too early to judge that, you might just be eating your words this year…give the guy a coach that trusts him and a full off-season to work with the team. I’m not saying he’s going to kick ass, but he’s definitely a better point guard than Devin Harris was. You can argue that Harris is a better scorer and can defend quicker, smaller point guards better, but Kidd does everything else better: rebounding, passing, defending bigger guards, leading, and free throw shooting
