Mets Pre-Game
Man, watching the Mets pre-game show and them talking about Willie Randolph – I get the feeling that if the Rangers score 5 runs in the top of the first, he may get fired before the bottom of the inning!
Oh, and a nice interview with Hamilton that talked about his performance on the field only (plus one questions about who is role model is these days = Narron). Haven’t seen one in a while that did NOT talk about his past.
Anyone know
a website that keeps track of the draft pick signed this year for the Rangers?
texasrangers.com doesn’t have it for this year.
Is it just me
Or would the rest of you guys like to see more Interleague games?? I mean, I’d rather see guys like Holliday or Wright more than once every 3 years.

Given the other options the Rangers have available...

Right now, the Rangers are sort of platooning Byrd and Boggs, which makes no sense, since Boggs hits LHPs much better than RHPs.

It is Laird’s fault Saltalamacchia isn’t throwing well.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 13, 2008 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Are you denying it would be easier to fix Salty's problem if he played every day?
Because I said nothing about Laird.
I'm saying that...
...I don’t think the fact that he’s starting about half the time, instead of 75-80% of the time, is the reason why he isn’t throwing runners out.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 13, 2008 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions
I didn't say that either
I’m just saying that if he had consistent playing time, and more chances to throw it would be easier for Walbeck or whomever to correct his problems.
oh he'd have more chances to throw alright

People like you just don't get it
We’re not contending this year. We should be developing Salty so he’ll be a better player when we are contending here in a couple years.
It’s not about winning games now, it’s about developing the players that wil win you games down the road. That’s why Eric Hurley is up here, and that’s why he’s getting a chance even though eveyone knows he still has problems giving up home runs.
But you don’t seem to get it – you’re just a casual fan who can’t get beyond the old “we should play whoever the best players currently are”. It’s a damn good thing you’re not the GM, because it’s that mentality that has cost us talent like Travis Hafner, Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young and others in the past.
what he said.
To be fair... You are a fan of School of Rock so your ability to judge anything is VASTLY overrated!!!!
~King Billy Royal, Minor League Ball
Dude your crazy
I’m a casual fan huh, I’ve been rooting for this team since I was in diapers. People like you dont get it, saying that “it’s not about winning games now” that is quite possibly one of the dumbest things you have ever said on here, what if the Rockies said that last year and its not like there are a lot of differences in the two of us, I mean for God sakes they had Mike Redman and Josh Fogg starting games and Jamey Carrol as there hero at the end of the season, what if Tampa says that this year, I mean they have a damn 20 year old at third base and Eric Freaking Hinske in right field, by us not trying to win games now is doing a huge diservice to our fans and other players on this team, I mean look at Oakland this year they are “Rebuilding” but they are still winning games, if we didnt care about winning games and then we had Harrison/Hurley come up and win like 12 out of 15 starts and C.Davis/M.Ram come up and hit 20 HR’s and drive in 50 runs in two months then we would really regret just giving away games earlier in the year, If Salty wants to be a Major League catcher then he needs to understand that its not a job you learn as you go, just ask Laird he was in a similiar situation with Barajas, the only difference was Laird had actually produced offensively and defensively before he was made to sit/play at aaa behind Rod, so stop being such a Salty ASSHAT and understand you can WIN and Rebuild at the same time.
by blueballlefty on Jun 13, 2008 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions
And you just prove my point over agin
You don’t get it.
“Rebuilding” is the equivalent of “learning as you go”. It’s good to win games while you’re rebuilding, but the idea is to let players play, get acclimated to the majors, and make the final improvements to their game they need to become great players. But you’re trying to say saying that if a player has a single shortcoming, he should not be allowed to be part of the rebuilding, which is stupid.
In case you haven't noticed
We are in contention this year. Will we win the division…probably not but we are not out of it. And until we are we cannot just throw in the towel. And even though we are in contention we are playing our young guys. We probably have one of the youngest starting lineups in the majors on most nights. Hamilton, Murphy, Boggs, Kinsler, Duran, Salty, Laird, Hurley, Feldman, Mathis, Gabbard, Rupe, CJ, FX2, and im sure im forgetting a few but all those guys are guys I would consider young and who will be here next year and the year after when we are supposed to be in contention. We are bringing up our young guys but not at the expense of winning we are doing it when they are ready and are in a position to not only continue developing but also compete. The veterans we do have are for the most part all doing a great job. Bradley, Guardado, Millwood, and Padilla are all helping us win and the key is they are not blocking anyone who could be here.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
How is letting Salty catch more
Throwing in the towel?
I didn’t say throw in the towel, but we need to remember where we are in our team’s development, and not try to prematurely go on a championship run.
ok
But your love of Salty is blinding you to the fact that his competition is not doing a bad job. Laird has been very good. And I know you will probably point to Saltys OPS or something and say his bat is so valuable but his throwing is legitimately starting to concern me. Concern me to a point where I think it may actually be hurting us more than his walks help us. I have no problem with him playing when he does but if he gets a day or two or three off in a row and laird keeps playing the way he has I am fine with that. And if Salty can’t keep working on his throwing on days he isn’t playing then you know what send him back down and resign Melhuise.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I know Laird has been good
But he has no future here. That’s not a knock on his abilites or the year he’s had, he’s just not the future.
We don’t really even know if the Rangers have taken the time to try and coach Salty with his throwing (which kinda seems doubtful, based on the fact that it’s not improving) so my point is, it would be better if we could see Salty play more often, so they might figure out what he needs to help him, and get it done. At this point, sending him back to AAA to do that is not really an option because thats where Teagarden is, so that means he’s got to get that playing time in the majors.
And another thing: as for Adam Melhuse, well his throwing is just as bad as Salty’s, and you’d have to put him on the 40 man roster, so that’s not really a good idea.
Laird
How do you know his future isn’t here? Is he an aging vet thats going to retire in a year or so? No. Hes still a relatively young catcher with decent offensive ability and above average defensive ability. And I believe he is still under team control for another year so its not like he is a FA after this year. We could conceivably go with Laird for this, and next year and possibly further than that and you know what. It may not be a bad idea.
For the record I do think Salty is the future by the way. But the Rangers have enough tape and have seen him enough that I am sure they know what is wrong with his throwing and if they aren’t working on it on the side that is a disservice to not only him but the club as well.
Basically my argument is that Saltys offense right now does not outweigh his defense enough to justify playing him the majority of the time. Until either Laird is traded, his offense goes in the tank, or Salty figures out how to not let it be a congo line from 1st to 2nd than there will be alot of 2-3 day breaks for him.
Alright well I am out for the night so this argument will have to resume another time. Yall boys have fun tonight. Go Rangers
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Laird's future
Both Salty and Teagarden disagree that he has a future here. I’m also not sure that one half season of putting up decent numbers against RHP while playing part time constitiutes average offensive ability.
We could go with him for a couple years, yes, but we’ve got more than one younger, better options, which means his time here is limited whether Salty is his replacement or not.
As for your arguement on Salty’s playing time, I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree – I’d just like to say, I’m not trying to be biased toward Salty, I’m genuinely trying to suggest what I think would be best for him.
thats frigging stupid
so why dont we bring up elvis, kennil, beavan and just let them work on stuff at the MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL

I swear, it feels like Feldman might end the year pitching like 175 innings with a 3.90 ERA and have a record of like 4-8 or something. He has been incredibly unlucky this year.
Interesting thing the Mets announcers brought up
Reyes has been sacrifice bunted over to second in the eighth inning or later three times this year and has scored none of those times.

Feldman
isn’t helping him out any. Salty actually looks like he is making some good throws but the runner is always at the bag by the time he can even get the ball out of his glove.
You know, it is worth noting
That Salty hasn’t been getting a whole lot of chances to make good throws. His pitchers always seem to be taking their sweet time delivering the ball, and teams are picking good pitches and good spots to run on him. People will just interper this comment as bias on my part, but I don’t think Salty’s throwing has been quite as bad as the stats indicate.
I’m not denying he has a big problem that needs to be fixed, I’m just saying that things seem worse than they are do to other factors.
not playing
does not mean he can’t work on it.
I don’t care if it’s laird or salty.

on slide steps, varying their delivery, etc. to keep runners close.
