Trade for Sabathia?

the question is would you?  If you can do a deal similar to the johan deal where its a trade and sign and get him before everyone else gets a chance to negotiate with him, should JD pursue it?

He is the perfect type of pitcher in terms of what we need, a young left-handed power pitcher who is a legitimate ace who could anchor the rotation for years to come.  Whether or not we are buyers or sellers, this might be a deal to consider pursuing.  Heck we could still sell and use those pieces to get c.c.

I actually think I would prefer waiting and just trying to money whip him, since you probably would have to do that anyways trade or no trade and save the pieces it would take to get him. FWIW, Gammons sees us as a dark horse to acquire him and does not think it will take a colon-type deal to get him:

How about the Texas Rangers. General manager Jon Danielshas rebuilt the farm system, owner Tom Hicks has the cash, it's a left-handed ballpark, the fact that C.C. was throwing 98 mph in the ninth inning of his second to last start tells us he's completely healthy and the Rangers might be able to do a trade and sign for the No. 1 starter they need to compete in the next three years.

Yes

a legit LH Ace. If he would give a window to negotiate an extension, then trade 1/5 of the top 25 prospects for him.

This team isn’t shit without more pitching, and, as much as I love farm kids, you trade them for exactly this type of pitcher/player.

Free market economy

that’s why.

Also, this team is gonna have a very hard time protecting all of the prospects in the Rule 5 Draft anyway, might as well put them to good use.

I think this team needs to acquire a veteran starter ASAP

C.C. and ben sheets are going to be available next summer along with perez, so the key here is dealing with an extension as part of the talks. You get the guy a little earlier than maybe planned, but he has that much more time to gel with the guys and keep up that little thing called chemistry that keeps the team continuously pulling for and with each other.

It all depends on what is on the table for him...

... i.e., which and how many prospects to give and if JD can work with his agent to get some parameters for an acceptable deal prior to pulling the trigger. No effing doubt the guy would be a ginormous addition to our traditional position of weakness.

However, if there’s a chance we could get Carlos Lee’d by him, forget the fuck about it.

Trade vs FA

If he hits the open market I’m pretty sure a NY team will pay more for him then Texas. IF (and that’s a big if) you could trade and sign him during the negotiating window, then I would consider it.

I’m just afraid his best days are behind him. Fat pitchers don’t hold up well. He could very well turn into the next CHP or Zito.

by boomer1 on Jun 15, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well,

i wouldn’t mind putting almost the exact same package that we got for Tex, to Cleveland for CC. Make a deal centered around Salty. Perhaps Salty, Blalock, Murphy/Boggs/Byrd/Bradley. I think with Mayberry finally knocking on the door and pushing for playing time, I might consider trading one of the young outfield guys. As long as we are able to keep our young pitching, i’d be happy. Obviously, with Davis doing what he’s doing already in AAA, he’ll probably make it to Arlington sooner rather than later and you don’t want Blalock blocking his way up.

I think with Teagarden and Ramirez making their ways up thru the system, Salty is expendable. But ONLY FOR STRONG, DEPENDABLE PITCHING. CC is in that category.

The package I’d like to see made would be Salty, Blalock, Byrd, Gabbard.

Why?

we have the pieces to make the move easily and without blowing up our depth in the minors. He is going to be a free agent after this season as opposed to the next season. The big selling point on Tex was that you would get him for two pennant runs, extension or no extension, c.c.’s value is vastly overblown in the national media circus and some of them are starting to realize it.

It would take one high end prospect, another top 10 prospect and either a lower level prospect or an upper level/major league young player with a more certain and probably lower ceiling.

Particularly, if the organization that put you in that situation is as much of a clusterfuck as this one.

And please don’t take this post as me feeling sorry for Mark Teixeira because I don’t. Being drafted and under a team’s control is how it works and he knew that. But eventually becoming a free agent and testing the market is also how it works and the Rangers knew it.

all I’m saying is that I don’t think it would be sad to see him booed for not wanting to be there. After all many of the people at the games are there by choice, so given the amount of $ he turned down to go elsewhere I can understand people there being upset with that.

What would be sad is people yelling “you suck” or getting on him for his performance because that was great while in Texas.

Sabathia is overrated imo....

I’d take him for the right price but that price won’t be out there. Hes certainly better than what the Rangers have but not worth what he’ll command on the open market. Look at how out of shape he is and that should give you an idea about his dedication level. Every single year he is damn near bad during the dog days of the season. That will be magnified by the Texas heat. Look up his month by month split. Its a repeating pattern every year.

by kumizi on Jun 15, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really like Sabathia

as a pitcher. I think he is an ACE, I think he would be the best pitcher to put on a RANGERS uniform sense Nolan, but I would not be very confident in seeing C.C. go to the mound in the middle of July when it is 100 degrees outside and 110 on the field while weighing in at 280, 290 whatever. Then we make one error and he is outthere pitching for an extra 30 minutes in an inning. He couldn’t cut it here, I think any pitcher we go after needs to be in very good physical shape if we plan on him pitching 190-220 innings here, that is definetly something we have to take into consideration.

Gammons

According to MLBTradeRumors, Gammons suggested Texas as a dark horse for Sabathia. Note I don’t have Insider anymore so I’m just taking MLBTradeRumors word for it.

you beat me to it

With the Rangers deep farm system, they will be a “dark horse” in nearly every potential trade of this type

Yep especially if it's for a pitcher

That doesn’t mean much except the Rangers will have a lot of smoke and no fire this trade deadline.

NY times article mentions that the Yanks seem to be in on CC

with a similar package to what they wouldnt give up for Johan. the difference? 6 games out june 15th

Johan is better.

They were willing to get Santana, so why not go for Sabathia!

Because you have Millwood and Padilla already locked up, adding Sabathia would give you a nice veteran 1-2-3 punch, allowing you to be sure about the kids. I would trade Salty, Arias, and two more players for Sabathia. Then sign Sabathia to a six year, 125 million deal.

Now is a good time to make a stab with a big deal or big free agent.

Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

Sabathia is certainly big

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Pitching trades

Any team trading a pitcher, will want a young pitcher in return. Cleveland would absolutely ask for Hurley, especially if they think they can get a pitcher from the Yanks.

Agreed

I think a solid offer may get c.c. You are probably not going to have to blow them away since its probably a foregone conclusion to Shapiro and the rest of their front office that after this season he is gone. Combine that with the fact that he has not been pitching great this year, although he has turned it on of late, and the Indians are falling behind quickly and suffering a ton of injuries and his value to them is probably greatest through a trade.

Now if you have to get in a bidding war I say back off, but if you can do a similar deal as the lee deal, where you really only give up one good piece (and get a possible decent prospect back as well) then its a slam dunk. Now im not saying we should model a deal after that and I certainly dont think we will receive any type of prospect back, but those are the types of deals we should be looking to make.
