6/15 minors
Chris Davis has his 6th AAA homer tonight. And Mad Max is 1 for 1 with a walk, as I post this.

I’m starting to think that we won’t have to concern ourselves with how BA, etc. will rank him in the offseason on prospect lists.

seriously though
what does he have to prove in AAA?
you have to be in the major leagues to struggle with and adjust to major league pitching.
and im pretty sick of cat/shelton myself.

It is getting close to the point where Davis is being blocked by Blalock. If Blalock is not traded at the deadline I think he will be over the winter.

I think
any chance of that happening hinges on two things, him getting promoted quickly as many here expect, and then lighting it up. I’d be surprised to see them call him up with the motivation discussed here though. I think that people are just overanxious, personally.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 15, 2008 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I also have to think...
...that, from an internal politics p.o.v., having a guy who was the 33rd pick in the draft and was given a major league contract then called up in September without having just completely dominated in the minors isn’t going to go over real well.
Particularly if you have guys like Ramirez, JMJ, or Teagarden who don’t get called up.

Promotion
I really don’t see much reason for Borbon to stay in HiA. How long before you think he moves up to Frisco?
by jf55510 on Jun 15, 2008 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not to be a weanie
but I can certainly see him being promoted for the second half (and would enjoy it selfishly)...or waiting another month and only giving him a month or so in Frisco. He’s not just absolutely dominating, despite how people are acting. He is doing very well, for all intents and purposes debuting in HA, so that’s awesome.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 15, 2008 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's not dominating
in the sense of a power hitter, but what more could you ask for from a CF who projects to be a leadoff hitter?
by Gdawg on Jun 15, 2008 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that you can say that any dominant player
regardless of style can put up an OPS over 800. I don’t mean to get into an argument over the semantics of “dominant” though.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 15, 2008 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well not going to argue the definition of "dominant" either
but looking specifically at what you want out of a leadoff hitter, good BA, low Ks, decent walk rate and showing improvement, lot of stolen bases without getting caught too much, and he has near identical splits against lefties and righties which is a huge plus. For what he is, he’s doing everything you could hope for. I think he needs to go to Frisco where he will hopefully continue improving his walk rate and maybe develop some of that double power into home run power.
by Gdawg on Jun 15, 2008 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
One big issue:
He doesn’t have a decent walk rate by any measure. The BA is there, and the OBP is solid. But I do not consider a 360 OBP from a leadoff type in HA dominating.
I”m not trying to argue that he shouldn’t be promoted, so please don’t place my argument there. But he is doing well, not dominating.

by shroomer on Jun 16, 2008 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hah
Something that used to frustrate me about Mayberry was that they were able to turn right around the next draft and get the power hitter that I think they were trying to get (though without as much COF range) in Mayberry in the 5th round, and that even though he was a year behind professionally and came from JC rather than Stanford, he quickly caught and passed Mayberry (caught in terms of level, passed in terms of apparent status).
But as Davis has gone up, up, up in stature and has just gotten better and better, I find that it doesn’t bother me as much (of course that may have a lot to do wtih Mayberry coming around some, but still).
by Brett Perryman on Jun 16, 2008 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Heh,
It is awfully nice that he appears to be coming around. Perhaps we have a platoon partner with Murphy? Hamilton, Bradley (when he’s able) and Murph/JMJ, with Davis at 1B in 2009. Nice lineup potential there. Need to find a 3B.

Angels
several of the prominent posters here continue to underrate them every year. Sciosia must be pretty smart.
by kumizi on Jun 15, 2008 10:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It's not Scioscia
I’m not one who underrates them, but the reason they’re good is that they have good pitching (and a handful of really nice hitters, some of whom don’t fit Scioscia’s style at all), not because of f-ing Scioscia.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 15, 2008 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

The Angels are
11th in runs and have the 2nd best record in the AL. It’s clearly all about “productive” at bats and giving away outs on the basepaths that makes them win.
On a related note, looking at RF/RA, I just noticed that the Rangers have given up 414 runs. Next most in the AL is Minnesota at 355, so we’re giving up almost a run a game more than anyone else in the AL. Pittsburgh is worst in the NL at 366.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 15, 2008 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

it was more of a jab at some of the people that underrate them moreso than it was praise for Scioscia.

It just seems...
that at the beginning of each year for the last 3-4 years, there is some kind of hope for a few people here that the Angels will be a 85 win team and if things go right for the Rangers, we can compete with them.
I always get a good chuckle out of that. Im more worried about not finishing in last place than I am about the Angels.

Chris Davis is awesome
But can you really say that he projects as a better ML hitter than Max?
I don’t think you can.
Davis sure looks like a legit middle of the lineup masher, but he still has some issues. I don’t see a weakness in Max.

Concur...
but he could play above average D at a position of need for the Rangers right now which you could argue makes him a better player, just not a better pure hitter.
Perhaps similar to what Board Game and Hamilton are doing this year at the ML level. I’ll take MaxRam playing the role of MOB and Beast playing the role of Beasticon and be very happy. Just glad to see them both tearing up the minors this year.

That's where
scouting comes into play. My suspicion is that scouts tend to downgrade Ramirez somewhat in terms of offensive projectability (i.e. power and raw talent/bat speed) in comparison with Davis. For example, Davis’ talent might allow him to better deal with his big issue with plate control than Ramirez with his small issue with plate control.

Ramirez has an issue with plate control?

by hightowersmith on Jun 16, 2008 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a big one
But it could be the sort of thing that can sneak up on you and you think you should have seen it, when the player struggles for a while. Mind you, I’m not predicting trouble for him. If you look back, I’ve been a big fan of this guy since he was in rookie ball.
But as nice of a season as he had last year, his K-rate was beyond one per four official AB (102 in 391 and worse than one per three AB in Bakersfield). And it’s really impressive that he has improved since Davis left, but he still is at 4.2 in Frisco. He’s a 23 year old who has moved a level at a time, so unlike Davis you don’t attribute any of it to his youth or pace of development.
Again, I’m not predicting, just saying that we hone in on something obvious and then wonder why it didn’t turn out like we expoected. Here’s an example, Jeremy Hermida vs Hanley Ramirez. Look at their minor league numbers and tell me how you were supposed to predict from them that Ramirez would easily rise above his obvious shortcomings, and Hermida, who while he struck out quite a bit was considered to have solid control of the strike zone, hasn’t so much so far. The answer (beyond some nagging injuries on Hermida’s part, which were predictable) is that Ramirez has that something extra that scouts recognized and most fans did not.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 16, 2008 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also meant to say
Virtually EVERY player who rises to the major leagues has an “issue” with plate control. When I say that Ramirez has a small issue, that means that he is just like literally 98-99% of players approaching the majors. They will struggle to survive on some level, because they are not already perfectly equipped to handle major league quality of every sort of pitch in every location. They just haven’t been exposed to it yet.
So I’m not saying that he’s got this wart, just that he’s probably not one of the handful of freaks that come along each decade who don’t ever appear that they have an adjustment period in the majors. And I’m saying that we are wise to consider things that may not be plainly obvious in stat lines, but that we have some level of access to that could explain how someone could project Davis as a better hitter than Ramirez..
by Brett Perryman on Jun 16, 2008 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yah
That’s fair.
I think the final divination of Max’s talent is going to be a 1B/DH/bu C role in OKC, coinciding with the release of Nate Gold. And that’s going to be a stud lineup.
Go Strangers.
