Why golf is not a sport
Personally, I think for an activity to be considered a sport it needs a group of men/women working together to accomplish a common goal. That is a team and a team is what makes a sport a sport. A sport also requires a list of rules longer than….hit ball in hole. In my opinion, golf is in the same class as bowling, pool, figure skating and competitive eating.
It’s basically an activity that real athletes play in their spare time.
Okay golf lovers…lemme have it. lol

because of my opinion on sport classifications? lol okay buddy
You’re hitting a ball to someone who hits it back to you. It’s ping pong on a grander scale. In other words, it’s a game. Just because it makes you break a sweat doesn’t mean it’s a sport. I mean do you consider track and field events sports? They most definitely take athletic ability but all it really is is a competition to see who can run faster/jump higher/throw heavy objects further. So in my opinion, track and field events aren’t sports either.
Now this is just one mans opinion…if you don’t agree, fine. But you ladies shouldn’t take it so personally. :)

Um.
Of COURSE track and field is a sport. By that logic swimming, speed skating and many, many other things aren’t sports.
You’re basically saying team sports are the only sports. And that’s asinite.
And btw table tennis is a sport as well. So “ping pong on a grander scale” would make it a sport.

I can't believe you guys are getting so butt-hurt over my sports classifications.
My definition of a sport is obviously different than yours. Is this really something that I deserve to be bashed about?
I love playing disc golf and I do it on a regular basis but in my opinion…it’s not a sport. It’s a recreational activity. Golf and disc golf are basically the same thing except instead of hitting golf balls to a target you’re throwing discs at a target. Both of ‘em make for some good times…both are recreational activities.

Well I mean you CAN have a different defintion
but that doesn’t make it the right definition. I could define the adjective smart as being able to know what a sport is. But that doesn’t make that definition correct.
FWIW from dictionary.com:
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

look Dick...I mean Dirk.
Half of the examples listed in that definition are just regular activities that someone made in to a competition (hunting, fishing, racing, etc).
You’re mom might be good at whoring and if she wanted to she could probably make it in to a competition. But that doesn’t make it a sport in my book.
I think it’s about time the definition of a “sport” was changed.

Is it possible to disagree with some one without putting them down? I never stated my opinions as fact. I said numerous times that “this is just my opinion”. I made that known from my very first post on the subject. My definition of a sport doesn’t match the dictionaries definition…whatever. I guess, technically I’m in the wrong here. But that doesn’t change my opinion on the matter…just the terminology.
I guess I’ll just have to make up a new word for actual sports. heh :)

Being a Team does not make a sport
You’re one of those kids in school who used to really like group projects and hate it when your teachers said you had to work individually aren’t you?
Individual sports are, in my opinion, far more interesting and revealing about people than team sports. That is why I like baseball so much – while it is most certainly a “team sport,” at its heart is a one on one matchup – pitcher versus batter. Greatness is relatively independent of the other 16 men on the field or in the lineups. In golf and tennis, greatness is in your hands alone – no one else can be blamed or credited.

Un-freakin'-believable.
There are about a hundred different reasons that Tiger Woods shouldn’t be in contention.
His knee is killing him.
Four double-bogeys in four days, after he hasn’t double-bogeyed in five years.
70-foot eagle putts.
45-foot eagle putts.
Hitting his drive into the sand on 18.
And yet, here we are.
Unreal.

competition sucks
I actually like Tiger – or at least his ability,
but generally I think he wins mostly because his competition sucks
these guys constantly wet their pants at the idea that Tiger is in the field.
he played as badly as he can play this weekend and everyone else in the field bit the big one.
they should just disband the tour and tell all the chokers to go get real jobs.
if they would change the rules to only the top 10 in each tournament get money then we could weed out all these guys who get by as “professional” players, but in reality they are just soaking the PGA for money and have neither the drive or even the intention of actually being a winner.
I hope Mediate wins tomorrow, only because it would be nice for his career and he’s been pretty entertaining this weekend. Other than that – I hope Tiger wins the next 10 tournaments and they take golf off TV – more time for baseball.

The PGA Tour is loaded with the deepest pool of talent it has ever had.
Back when Jack and Arnie were at the top, the # of legitimate threats to win each tourney was much smaller than it is now.
Mediate is the #158th ranked player in the world, and he just might win the toughest tournament held on U.S. soil every year.
Many of these guys do get intimidated by Tiger. But that’s not because they suck or are weak. It’s because he’s freakin’ Michael Jordan part II.

I JUST WENT TO THE PLAYOFFF ROUND!!!!!!!
Pretty exciting 9 holes of golf I got to see (free tickets showed up late…). Rocco had the crowd behind him – I thought he was going to pull it out. And when else do you get to hear Tiger curse?
