Goldstein's Monday Ten Pack: Davis, Feliz
I'm not surprised about his feelings on Feliz:
Neftali Feliz, RHP, Low-A Clinton (Rangers)
It’s hard to remain professional when talking about Feliz. When I ranked him as the No. 3 prospect in the Braves system at the end of 2006, I got a ton of emails calling me a moron, or worse. When I ranked him as the No. 1 prospect in the Rangers system this year, those emails continued. He was too young, too unproven, too risky. Now, every time he pitches I have to restrain myself from just saying, "I told you so." Feliz had arguably his best start of the year on Saturday, allowing only one hit over 5 1/3 innings while striking out 13 to lower his ERA to 2.24. As impressive as that is, keep in mind that he took a while to find his groove for Clinton. In his last 10 starts, he’s given up just six earned runs in 52 innings (1.04 ERA), while allowing 31 hits and striking out 65. I’ve gone on and on about his stuff in other places, so I’ll just say, "I told you so."
He says pretty much what we all have the last few days on Davis:
Chris Davis, 1B, Triple-A Oklahoma (Rangers)
I received an email from a reader recently asking me where, at this point, Davis might rank in my Top 100 next year. At his current rate, it’s just not going to matter, as he not only continues to move through the system at a breakneck pace, but he seemingly continues to improve every time he moves up. Davis went 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs over the weekend, and is now batting .355/.419/.671 in 22 games for the RedHawks. It’s hard to see him making another step forward if he gets the call to the big leagues, but he’d certainly be a massive upgrade over anything that guys like Jason Botts, Ben Broussard, Frank Catalanotto, or Chris Shelton have provided for the big league squad this year.

I think
That there’s a direct proportion between how much ass Davis pounds and how annoyed I am that Blalock will be playing 1st in a few days.

I love having a farm system
Everyday it’s someone different stepping up in a huge way.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

huge fan.
but what about gomez?
he’s been even better.

Gomez
He doesn’t have nearly the rate on Ks or HRs Feliz has this year.

gomez has walked less and gets more grounders

yeah?
just wondering, have you seen either of them pitch?
to say that gomez hasn’t been very close to, or as good, as feliz, is kind of silly.
i’m not saying theyre comparable prospects,
but gomez definitely has potential to turn into a very good one himself.

Feliz
has about 6 mph gas difference than Gomez. That’s pretty substantial

yeah
.. but my point was, gomez has still been just as good this year, right?
and he seems like he has a better frame to fill out, IMO.

Feliz is much more likely
to sustain this performance in the 2nd half while at a higher level, and he’s also more likely to sustain this level of performance at the higher levels - in general - based off of his peripherals and sheer stuff.
Gomez is having an excellent first half. What a pleasant surprise.

No
Gomez has given up 5 HR’s to Feliz’s 1. They’re close in innings, but Feliz has 34 more strikeouts…his K rate is 50% higher than Gomez. Gomez is having a very nice surprise season, and putting himself on the prospect map as a potential mid-rotation guy. Feliz looks like an ace.

Feliz
The doubting Thomas in me wants to see these results in the Cal League.
Obviously it’s a striking mix of groundballs and Ks with a great hit rate and solid walk rate, and the repertoire is developing.
Just, show it outside the pitchers’ league, over in the hitters’ league…

Feliz, Davis, Blalock
I just hope he’s still speaking that highly of Feliz in about 3 years. Davis will be in Arlington later this year.
Hopefully Blalock comes back and mashes and is tradeable. A few months ago I was sure they would pick up Blalock’s option and he’d be at 3B next year while they await Andrus. The FA market there absolutely sucks, so I was ok with that. Now, though, he just seems like a square peg in a round hole—an injury prone, bad defensive guy on a team that needs to move forward and is stressing defense behind it’s average pitching staff.
Trade Blalock if he plays decently when he comes back, plan to put Young at 3B over the offseason with a stopgap at SS until Elvis is ready to rock and roll. Get a good 3B prospect back if possible in one of the deals this summer.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

That has to be a priority
Get a good 3B prospect back if possible in one of the deals this summer.
Especially with the news that West has been moved to SS? I assume they did that as a contingency for a coincidental power drop-off, post-P.E.D. and all. But hey, if he can play SS, power to him.
Acquiring a 3B prospect should be right behind “1. Trading Bradley. 2. Getting young SP” on the deadline priority list. Unless Whittleman pans out, they would be pretty screwed if they weren’t fortunate enough to have a guy like FOTF who can move from 2B-SS-3B, in that order. I think he was elite at 2B, serviceable at SS until “now”, and likely will be above-average at 3B for a few years. That’s fairly unique, no?
His bat will still have value at the top of the lineup, despite the lack of power. You need a guy like MY who excels at making contact—especially when the power will be made up from many other places.

If Blalock mashes for the summer
I think the rangers could definitely pull of a Blalock for LaRoche type of deal, even though this offseason it seems like we could have gotten more than just LaRoche.

Ok
But what about MY?
I was thinking of acquiring a high-ceiling 3B prospect, but one who is years away as the tradeoff—so that MY can play 3B for 3+ years before being displaced, yet again.

Pitching can be more than one priority. I’d also like to hedge my SS bet if the opportunity presented itself. That way, even if it didn’t work out. you might have a good SS backup, rather than the Kata type.

Lemon, Arias?
They could be good SS backups, if not more …

Yeah
It’s possible. There are questions about whether Lemon will be a SS, and he’s only in A-ball. With Arias, he should be that guy, I’m just not sure what he’ll do with himself at this point. He can make contact and get to balls defensively, but will the rest of his skills hold up enough to be a decent player?
by Brett Perryman on Jun 17, 2008 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
From a backup SS
what exactly are we looking for besides ability to hit for contact and good defense?
by FirebatM3 on Jun 17, 2008 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
are you implying Arias projects to be nothing but a back-up shortstop in the bigs?
by oc on Jun 17, 2008 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If so,
would that surprise you at this point? His offensive value is extremely limited, and he still seems to be limited on defense as well. Right now I’ll be pleasantly surprised if he even becomes a serviceable utility player.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
by t ball on Jun 17, 2008 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
going back to my original point, I wouldn’t mind having an alternative to Andrus (in case he doesn’t work out), and that’s where I’m coming from with Arias. I don’t know how confident you can be that his bat will be acceptable or that his arm will hold up.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 17, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
3B
for the life of me, I can’t think of a decent 3B prospect that might be available. Gamel has a place in Milwaukee already, LaRoche seems to be hurt, and everyone else kinda sucked.
by FirebatM3 on Jun 16, 2008 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gamel
There’s no way he stays at 3B though right? I thought he was well below par defensively.
I floated the idea of LaRoche a while back but AJM pointed out that Young’s future is pretty much at 3B. Unless MY moves to 2B and Kinsler moves to LF, I don’t see the need to target a 3B prospect to be honest.
That and like you, I have no idea who might be available.
by LiamP on Jun 16, 2008 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gamel
they pretty much have to take him at 3B. He’s blocked at LF by Laporta and at RF by Braun and at 1B by Fielder.
My god, I just realized the Brewers may very well field a team of
1B Prince Fielder
2B Rickie Weeks
3B Mat Gamel
SS JJ Hardy
LF Matt Laporta
CF Who Cares
RF Ryan Braun
Is that the worst defense ever created in the history of man?
by FirebatM3 on Jun 16, 2008 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
Especially if the Brewers move Corey Hart to CF to make room for Braun and LaPorta.

Word is that they're very open to dealing Prince this off-season
His unwillingness to sign a long-term extension and Gamel’s lack of a position being 2 big factors in that.

Question:
I posed this same question on Newberg and the response kinda surprised me.
Who is the better prospect: Defensive Whiz, Breakout Player Jose Vallejo or the ultra-patient Marcus Lemon?
by FirebatM3 on Jun 16, 2008 3:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The guy who took this video wrote the following about Jose Vallejo:
Vallejo was overall very impressive at the plate and in the field. His balance and body control were especially impressive. I’m a big fan.
.
[Update: So, I’m here eating cold pizza, re-watching the Vallejo footage, and there just has to be more said about his lateral quickness, speed and coordination. Vallejo is listed as 172lbs, and I don’t believe that for a moment. He seems more like 180-185 and exceptionally athletic. Yes, I likely caught him on a good night, but the tools were extraordinary that night. He was sharp and I’ll go out of my way to catch another Bakersfield game.]

Third Base Prospect
what about german duran? Is his future limited to second or utility man? If so this could very well cancel out arias’ future unless he is a stopgap shortstop (unless he comes up and surprises everyone) until elvis is ready. That is unless there is a possible move down the road off kinsler to the outfield. As much as I like him, at some point the defense needs to improve consistently.
Its getting tough to see a place on this team for some of the younger guys other than davis without some pieces being moved around. Guys like mayberry, salty, cruz, arias, duran, ramirez, and even metcalf at some point need to see time or be traded, and yes I know cruz has had two shots, but I think most of us can agree he should probably be given one more shot before all is said and done.
