Rick Peterson fired? (Apparently not)

Will Carroll reports that Rick Peterson has been fired as pitching coach for the New York Mets.

Peterson, of course, made his name with the Oakland A's, where he coached with Ron Washington and Art Howe.

Could he end up in Texas?

UPDATE -- Carroll now says, nevermind...

Peterson..

I agree, we have to at least kick the tires, and as AJM points out he does have ties to the org. Why is it that Connor appears to skate by without any heat?

Get on the phone, JD

And have Peterson in Arlington before Hurley makes his next start.

No

But he could inherit Hurley, Harrison, Feliz, Beavan, and Main along with others

Methinks the Mets threw the wrong guy under the bus

If you’re going to fire someone… I could understand the bullpen coach because the relievers have made the news lately, after really good starting efforts. But in listening to the Mets announcers this past weekend, it sounded to me like the offense bas been the bigger problem. Why not fire the hitting coach? I don’t remember his name right now but I remember people wondering why they ever hired him in the first place because he wasn’t a very good hitter in his playing days.

+1

I think that Peterson has actually done some good things with some of the Mets young pitching staff : Maine, Perez, Pelfrey etc

Peterson nearly destroyed Pelfrey.

If Pelfrey hadn’t gone back to his curve (rather than the Peterson-pushed slider), he’d still be floundering. Guys with 95-mph sinkers should never flounder…

Connor doesn't do much for me...

but I’m not so sure Peterson would either.

The excuse is already there given the pitching performances this year, especially in the ‘pen. I guess it would just be a change, probably wouldn’t hurt any.

Now says...

sources were incorrect and final decision hasn’t been made.

It’s only a matter of time before he and Randolph get the axe though.

Adam,

are you becoming the Miles of “guys about to be fired” false alarms?

I think it has to do with bad information

though Miles does hold many ignominious titles …

Footnote

I’m waiting for a pitching coach who knows the physiology of what different guys’ arms are doing, how to optimize the effectiveness of whatever the pitcher can physically do, and does not have a template or recurring pattern such as “raise arm slots”, or “lengthen stride”, or “throw footballs to build durable elasticity”, or whatever mantra has worked and got him noticed and elevated to MLB pitching coach. Not that I know of any such person, but ….........

You'll have to be more specific than that...

should I assume you’re talking about an article on Mark Connor?

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 17, 2008 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, what could you mean by specific?

That’s a template for a pitching coach who is analytical and actually coaches, not about any current pitching coach I’m aware of. No article to cite. And the “not that I know” should indicate that if anyone meets the criteria, has had success in professional baseball, and does not use any particular “method” to supervise his pitching staff, I don’t know and haven’t heard of such a person. Connor, Peterson, and others seem to me to fall into the one or two trick pony category. Maybe Hawkins is close to the type I’d like, but I don’t have real evidence of that, either. I’m idealizing.

I'm guessing that the rumor...

I’m guessing that the rumor was started once news was leaked that Randolph was fired…
