Monday evening linkaliciousness
Some linkaliciousness this evening...
T.R. Sullivan has a new mailbag column up, and the last question left me wondering if miles has a younger brother living in McKinney...
John Barten has the latest edition of the THT Weekly Awards up, and has some love for Milton Bradley and Ian Kinsler...
Jeff Sullivan ruminates on Bill Bavasi being relieved of his duties...
Richard Justice thinks that the thing for the Astros to do, given that they are a .500 team with some big veteran contracts and no minor league system to speak of, is to stay the course and spend big on free agent pitching this offseason. I bet he is also a big Bill Bavasi fan...
Danny Ray Herrera examined, with charts, pitch f/x data, and all sorts of geeky stuff.
You know the M's $20 million per year centerfielder? He's now a $20 million per year right fielder. The day your g.m. gets fired seems to be an odd time to start tinkering, but hey, whatever floats your boat...
FJM notes the latest level of ESPN's descent into hell.

Is that like a fetish?
"No bear or disco for Juan" - Mr. Santos
are they gonna have to trade ichiro?
he’s older and if they rebuild, his trime-frame and theirs doesnt match up and i assume he’d get ya a buchholtz or hughes kinda return just for marketing boom alone.

Wouldn't that just kill their fanbase?
I mean why else go to a M’s game if not for ichiro and fatty hernandez?

So they put Wee Willie Bloomquist in center
That should be interesting… although he’s played 72 games there in five years and only made one error. Looks like his range factor (according to baseball-reference) tends to be below average, but hey, what the hell.
John McClaren is insane.
“Ichiro, you’re my best defensive outfielder and only hitter with an OBP above .339. But we’re losing, so I’m going to move you to right, and I’m thinking about moving you out of the leadoff spot.
“But I’m still going to bat Jose Vidro 3rd or 5th, even though he’s hitting.219/.267/.333.

Willie threw a fit the other day
For those that don't like Wash...
at least be thankful that McClaren isn’t our manager.

The same goes for the
JD haters out there. Be glad Bill Bavasi isn’t our GM.

ESPN/BBTN
That whole “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” thing is a mockery of all that is cable sports, and that’s really saying something considering all the awful sports coverage and the tripe on cable these days. Last night, they played Peter Gammons displaying his Kermit the Frog looks while singing a god awful “tune” to an even worse “beat”.
For any Lewis Black fans, you know the Britney Spears/Aerosmith/N’Sync trifecta from hell joke? I honestly think this takes the cake. How ESPN rationalizes this (excuse my frankness) bullshit over legitimate baseball reporting is beyond my ability to comprehend.
I used to worship Baseball Tonight and Peter Gammons/Tim Kirkjian, but now they just come across as cookie cutter, east coast biased baseball reporters. Tim Kurkjian’s “That throw’s hard. You should really go out to the field and see how far that is sometime.” statement is almost as overused as Steve Burthiaume’s “Fill thine horn with oil…AND GOOOOOOOO!!”
I must be a masochist to subject myself to such awful television.
Picture a life without ESPN
I used to love Baseball Tonight as well, but after living in Japan for the past 3 years, I’ve definitely gotten used to life without it. I’m coming back to the states in about a month for good, and this is the kind of reporting I’ll be coming back to?
...
Maybe I should just stick to the internet and the occasional local news coverage.
ESPN must be searching for a new fan-base.
I don't watch ESPN
I make do with internet for my baseball news of the day. What’s going to kill me is not having NFL Network this season. I recently moved and had to go back to Charter. ESPN’s football coverage is as bad as baseball. The NFL Network was a great alternative for that….
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
Ahh DRH
I was sad to see him included into that deal. I never knew what to expect from him on the ML level but he was my plucky, against-all-odds, feel good (insert another sports cliche) prospect to keep an eye on.
He’s one of those guys that will either flame out after a few years or pitch until he’s 56 years old, Orosco style. It’ll be tough keeping track of him in the years to come but I’ll do my bestest
Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be? - hang gliding, come on! -- Dignan
Last night was the first time....
I turned away from Baseball Tonight when they started promoting this “Battle of the Bands” crap!! My wife couldn’t believe I did it, but she understood.
I have always hated the mixing of the music industry into sports.
