Willie Randolph Fired
According to the AP, Willie Randolph has been fired as the manager of the New York Mets. Jerry Manuel will be taking the reigns as interim manager. The Mets are currently 33-35, seven games back of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Randolph's tenure in New York began in 2005. He was instrumental in turning around the Mets which were under .500 from 2001-2004. His tenure had an overall record of 301-253. His best season was 2006 when the Mets won 97 games and came within one game of the World Series.
After trading for Santana, expectations for Randolph were very high to begin the season, and sub-.500 baseball ten weeks into the season was unacceptable.

It'll be interesting to see how this reflects upon Omar Minaya as well
After all, it was upon his reccomendation that Randolph was brought back after last year’s meltdown.
Sounds like the Mets are about to do some serious housecleaning – if they do wind up firing Rick Peterson, as was prematurely reported yesterday, I’d really like to see the Rangers get rid of Mark Connor.

apparently he was
fired, along with their hitting coach. They reportedly called up their triple coaches to replace them. I wonder how many options they have left.

If you had Kristen Bell and I had Rick Peterson...
...I’d definitely do that trade with you. I want to touch Kristen. A lot.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Minaya
and the Mets front office handled all this terribly.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

Was hoping Minaya would make it till next week.
Looks like my first trip to Shea will involve the Jerry Manuel led Mets. Yay?
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Very poorly handled by the Mets...
Why make him fly all the way out to Anaheim before you make this decision?
Why let him sit in his press conference and answer questions about the state of the team, and their outlook going foward before you make this decision?
Why issue the press release at 3:15 in the morning, and have nobody within the organization available for comment?
The timing sucks, and it makes Omar Minaya and Mets ownership look like a bunch of cowards…
by N41D on Jun 17, 2008 9:11 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The 3:15 thing was only 12:15 a.m. Anaheim time
The game would have been over by 10 or thereabouts, meaning they probably met with him after the game and issued the press release right after the intern wrote it.
The timing I have more issue with is which day they picked… the traditional “viking funeral” is to set the manager on fire and send the team on a long road trip. I could even see letting him finish the road trip with the team… but to have him manage the first game of the road trip and fire him, after the second win in a row, no less, doesn’t speak highly for the professionalism. Are they paying for his ticket back to New York? Even though he could certainly afford one, it’s the least they could do.

even after a West Coast game...
...you’d think they’d have the presence of mind to wait ‘til the next morning.
personally, i don’t see the point of canning a coach immediately after a ballgame… especially after a win… does nothing for your team’s psyche.

he said publicly he has no intention of not coaching and is looking for a team either to fully rebuild from the ground up
of a playoff team capable of winning. nothing in between.

so, how do the rangers go about getting him?
also, how does a pitching coach have the power to rebuild a team?

how do the rangers go about getting him?
step 1: fire mark conner
step 2: call leo mazzone offer job (be prepared to pay dont be cheap)
step 3: announce press conference
step 4: hold press conference
anyway, back to seriousness, here is the article i read on his departure from Baltimore and his intentions going forward and i wanna steal a couple quotes. Leo I thought it was decently encouraging. peterson does nothing for me
Mazzone has no intention of being idle during the 2008 season.“He’s not going to sit out a year. He has no desire to do that,” said Brad Steele, Mazzone’s business manager. “He will have plenty of time to do that after he retires.”
“I think Leo still has a lot of fire in his belly. He wants to be part of a winning organization,” Steele said. “But he’s not opposed to doing what he did in Atlanta, taking a team from last to first. Either way, we suspect there will be a lot of interest in him.”

Peterson
What would Peterson bring that Connor currently does not? Until the highly regarded prospects make their way to the majors, the Rangers are going to have to make do with a bunch of pitchers who have yet prove to the team that they belong in the majors. If a pitcher is simply mediocre, I don’t think that any pitching coach can add talent to a particular player.
Many people cite Oliver Perez as an example as to why Peterson should be hired, but Perez had one spectacular season with the Pirates (ERA+ of 145), and one good season in New York (ERA+ of 120). I think the talent was already there for Perez, but I don’t feel the same about many of the “fringe” pitchers on the Rangers. If this team needs stability, I don’t see the reason to hire another pitching coach when he may not be able to have a bigger impact than Connor.

maybe more of an issue
of securing the services of peterson before another team does

And
to set in place his organizational plan while the cluster of talent that they have is still in its ultra-formative stage. The system’s roving and staff instructors teach what Jaramillo and Connor/Chiti do for the most part, so if you are uncomfortable with Connor’s message or approach, you might as well get the change made now.

about the Mets firing their pitching coach, and him possibly coming to Texas, which BP then updated to say it was false, then updated again to say it was true.
