Wednesday a.m. things
And back to .500.
You know, it would be nice to get a big lead in a game and not have that lead end up shrinking to a worrisome size.
Vicente Padilla says he got tired in the 6th, although he ended up throwing just 91 pitches for the game.
Stop me if you've heard this before, but Hank Blalock isn't going to be back as quickly as was thought. He's now expected to go on a rehab assignment this weekend, and be activated for Tuesday's game in Houston.
Kevin Sherrington has a column up where he talks to Mark Teixeira, and says the Rangers need to move some more vets this summer.

It was nice to see the Rangers
beat up one of the top pitchers in the NL. Wish I could’ve seen the game.

That Blalock kid.
He might have some health concerns.
I agree with Sherrington. I think every vet on the team should be available. Good return value, of course, being important.

Evan/Kevin video and newsletter
Dealing Salty is talked about. Laird is under team control until 2010 (I think) and they opine that Salty’s value is not going to get any higher than this year. I’m on board. I like the idea of Salty in this lineup, but he might be more helpful bringing back something solid in trade considering the team’s catching depth.

I agree.
I’m not gung ho about trading him or anything, but I am very open to the idea.

Agreed
Salt is a hell of a bat, but his inability to throw out batters is causing singles and walks to equal doubles, which, with our pitching staff, spells disaster. Laird is keeping Max’s spot warm for now. We’re fine at catcher. Get something nice back for him.

That is debatable
and Salt has the greater trade value right now. If a sweet deal can be had…. by all means.

I mean defensively
Salty can at least call games and frame pitches. The Frisco manager has said that Max still needs a lot of work in all those areas, so there’s no way you can possibly start saying Max is the catcher of the future if you think Salty’s defense isn’t good enough for the position.

And as for trading Salty, I think that would be pretty stupid at this point
I also think it would be stupid to trade Teagarden or Max at this point for that matter. We should be treating our young catching depth like our pitching depth: waiting for the best talent to develop and rise to the top before we go trading any of it.

Heh! Are you serious???
A major league catcher that can’t throw out baserunners? Like I said before… with our staff and that ballpark, walks and singles that turn into doubles or triples will kill us. If Salt has reached the major leagues and can’t stop baserunners from running wild, I don’t give a shit about framing pitches. That’s the least of my concerns.
I seriously hope that this is one of those things like in Major League 2… where the catcher needed to read playboy articles to be able to throw the ball back to the catcher. Let’s get Salty some mags.

max
hasn’t been stellar at throwing out runners in AA this year. According to baseballreference.com he is 16 of 66. about 24% If throwing out runners is a big criterion for evaluating a catcher, there isn’t much to promise he would be any better in the majors than salty

Salty's throwing
Ok, trade him because he’s got value and can bring something good back, NOT because he is not throwing well. That would be stupid, he has plenty of time to work on that to become adequate.

Second Line Veterans
I still think this team would be better served by trading second line veterans like Shelton, Byrd, Laird, Catalanotto and getting more modest returns than trying to put together a blockbuster deal for Salty or Bradley. Blalock is kind of a tweener in that respect because of his glove and injuries.
by iblum on Jun 18, 2008 9:41 AM CDT 0 recs
blalock has no value
i dont even want him playing on my team
keep him and attempt to build his value back up
if he gets injured again, we’re not in a worse position than we are in now,
or
if we trade him
whatever happens to blalock, his best days are behind him,
bring up davis!

Gotta try and let him build up some trade value first
But I agree, he needs to be unloaded before he starts roadblocking Chris Davis at first. Davis looks like he’s gonna be ready by the end of the month. Hell, we could probably call him up now if we wanted to.

Beau
why does everyone forget about Beau Jones? Sure he was just a “throw in” and not projected as highly as the others in the deal, but the dude’s got potential. Whether it is as a MR or a SP, he’s got potential. I hope he comes up and is the next Clemens (BoSox versionm) so everyone can wonder where the heck he came from…

The Next Clemens?
I guess they were both first round picks but I don’t see many other similarities. I mean Roger was a college guy who took less than a year to get to the show and never posted an era above 2 in the minors, while Beau was a high school guy who has never really come close to dominating. And on top of it all Beau is lefty unlike roger. Not seeing this comp.

I’m obviously not comparing or expecting a Clemens out of Beau, just picked an extreme to hope for in my scenario. Nothing more, nothing less

The shame about Blalock is
it is going to be real tough to pay him $6.5 M with his ongoing health issues, and also tough to trade a guy who hasn’t had a productive full season since ‘04.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it

Blalock
Well we paid MB what 4 million this year and with Blalock being 2 years younger than MB I think 6.5 mil for one year is reasonable.

Eh.
The more I think about it, the more I can see Blalock at 3B again next year.
$6.5m just isn’t that much money in today’s game, and there aren’t other prospects who’ll be ready for the position in 2009.
In fact, it’s just flat out rare to find a thumper at 3B with good D. At least Blalock’s got a chance at above average offense if he’s on the field. The only other real possibility in-house is Duran or another roll of the dice on Vazquez.

Tex
I did notice in the dmn today there was a brief mention of the high and tight fastball to tex during his first at bat, and laird said he gave him a “welcome back to arlington” look.
