Incidentally, on the beasticon...
So, I went back today to find out what I posted about Christopher Davis when he was drafted a couple of years ago. Here it is...my thoughts are pretty useless, there...
However...I had forgotten another aspect of this story. Namely, that Davis was drafted in 2005 by Anaheim as a draft-and-follow, and supposedly (according to one of our posters) turned down a $450,000 offer the week before the 2006 draft, opting to re-enter the draft instead. He got $172,500 to sign with the Rangers.
And of course, Justin Smoak was an Oakland A draftee in 2005 who went to college over a $50,000 difference in signing bonus...

Davis
That just makes it even sweeter. You just know when he first faces the Angels and pummels them they are going to be wondering how he got away the way some Ranger fans did whenever Zito was in Oakland
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Tim Murphy
He was an 11th rounder by the Angels, also in 2005, and hopefully the karma keeps working.
baseBALLIN!
And of course
Warner Madrigal was once an ANgels Prospect and John Mayberry was a Mariners first round pick out of high school, but decided to attend Stanford instead.

He either didn’t want to play for the Angels or he got some bad advice.

I'm going to believe option 1
and put my hands on my ears and sing Journey really loud to block out the sounds of anyone saying something different.

You think Metallica and Bono are overrated
but you’ll sing Journey? Wha?

Metallica and Bono ARE overrated
U2 has put out some great songs, but most of their stuff is crap. Most Metallica songs give me headaches.

U2 IS overrated...
...and also one of the greatest musical acts ever. Certainly one of my favorites.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.
Sure it does...
...I think they are great, among not only the best ever but also my all-time favorites.
AND they are overrated, specifically by those that think they somehow transcend music and have some greater significance in this plane of existence.

How many people
Have to think that for a band to be overrated?
I’m sure there’s somebody who thinks that about every musical group.

That's a tough argument to get a firm grasp of...
...and it really doesn’t interest me much so I’ll just say I give up.

Regarding the $50,000 discrepancy between the A's and Smoak
From AN in January 2007:
Blez: There have been different reports about what happened in the negotiations between you and Justin Smoak. Smoak’s turned into a great prospect. Baseball America reported that he wanted $1 million and that you were offering $950,000. Was it ever really that close?Beane: (Laughs) No, no. I’ll try and give you the Reader’s Digest answer. We never even made an offer to Justin. In fact, when we drafted him, we drafted him late. He was projected to go in the first or comp round. To his credit, he made it quite clear the amount of money that he was interested in signing for. We just said we’d draft the kid late just in case there was some point during the summer he changed his mind. Quite frankly, I’d spoken to him and he’s a great kid. I know his coach a little bit at South Carolina and we at no point were trying to bribe him out of his scholarship because it’s a great university. To put it plainly, we said we look forward to seeing you in three years, go out and have a great career. In fact, Justin and I had a conversation at one point even though he had a number that he wanted he was very committed to going to South Carolina and I congratulated him on that decision. We never even made an offer. That was total fiction. I can assure you that if we were between $950,000 and a million dollars we would’ve found a way to get it done. I was a proponent of the kid going to school. He was committed and he’s a South Carolina kid. I think some of the college programs are a great developer of talent and I’m a big fan of these kids going and coming out three years later.
I suppose this comes down to who you’d rather believe: Beane or BA.
Beane.
I mean 50k? Smoak and Beane would’ve been crazy to not compromise.
Not the only black poster on LSB.
Beane's a damn dirty liar who makes up fake names to write books about himself
but in all seriousness, that does sound a bit more reasonable. It also makes it that much sweeter that we drafted him right before Oakland. You know Beane had to be thinking how perfect it would be if Smoak dropped to him after he apparently liked him and was very interested in signing him back then.
