A very interesting Newberg Report
Check it out. He seems to think that it will be hard for Texas to make any sorta impact trade based on how stacked our system is. You know what though, I totally agree. Teams know we are stacked. A bullpen arm for example, will cost us more in terms of players and or upside then it would for lets say toronto, who aren't exactly stacked in the minors.
I also noticed that Benny Broussard was signed by the Cubbies. I didn't notice that here but thought I'd pass it along.
Also, is it another young GM mistake by not placing Benoit on the 15 day DL and keeping Tejeda for a while longer? The way Jamey puts it, it may very well be. The Rangers were hoping to use Benny by this weekend and if things don't go well, then I guess once again we could possibly loose an extra arm that we could have used.
Basically, I think JD can build a very useful team, can stack a farm system with quality depth, and has the right tools around him to develop them. I don't think he knows that well how to manage his roster. That is part of his job right?

Tejeda
Had plenty of chances to make an impact and was terrible…letting him go is not a big deal.
Jamey’s report seemed to be spot-on, but this team is what it is, a .500 club. Overpaying for a middle reliever isn’t going to put us over the top. Stay the course, and make strides towards 2010.

I don't know if I buy the "farm system is deep, so lets screw them"
To a very small extent, I guess there is some value to a GM saying “hey, we got their #1 prospect!” but this is really a PR stunt only, and isn’t something that a good GM is going to do.
I think Jamey’s example that a team like the Cardinals isn’t going to bite on JMJ because he isn’t a top five prospect in this system is a little misleading. The Cardinals probably won’t bit on JMJ because he isn’t more than a mid-tier prospect: he’s getting up there in age and even though this year has been pretty good, he doesn’t have a great track record.
Now, will the Rangers system depth increase the initial asking price? Sure – if you go into a car dealership and say “i just got a $20K bonus and want to buy a car!,” you aren’t going to get a great initial offer from the guy, and negotiations may be tough. But that doesn’t mean he is going to refuse your $16K offer and sell that car for $15K to some other guy.
The only problem is
We shouldn’t be trading for anyone. We should be the ones trading players other teams want and get back what we want. We shouldn’t be buyers. Unless a Hamilton-esque player is available to us. And by that I mean a young superstud who we would have control of for 3-4 years. Those type of players aren’t available midseason and if they are they would be in exchange for one of our veterans like Bradley or Padilla or such.

Padilla or Millwood?
Contracts aside, who do you keep?

Why would you discount their contracts?
That’s a big part of any “keep or trade” question.

You're right, benmor78
It started out as a 2-parter…add contracts now.

I think the real problem with the argument is...
how the other teams perceive the Rangers interest in a player. If the Rangers are in first place at the deadline and are looking to beef up their bullpen or get a righty power bat, then yeah, those teams will probably try to bend JD over and have their way with him.
HOWEVER, since the Rangers probably won’t need to make a move like that, I don’t think any team is going to have that kind of leverage. Will they ask for those players? Hell, yes. Will they get them? I doubt it.
Any GM shopping a player is going to get the best deal he possibly can. In the Rangers situation, I think they will be in a position to outbid several teams without having to “mortgage the future”.
Benoit...
will be out for 2 weeks before he pitches again. It was a bad move by JD to DFA Tejeda, but he hasn’t done anything here to lose any sleep over it.
He may go somewhere else and find it, but that doesn’t mean he would have eventually done well here. He has had plenty of chances both in the rotation and ‘pen and needed to move on.

Other people involved.
John Hart is still involved in a lot of baseball decisions. JD has input from a lot of people. He’s not operating in isolation in a tiny room at the top of some tower (as far as I know).
A move like that, if it really DOES turn out badly, would affect a team in a pennant race a lot more than a team hanging around .500. Now, if you really believe that Tejeda has a useful part to play on a playoff baseball team, then a serious argument can take place.

Yes JD gets...
help and advice from others, but as GM final decision is still his, I would assume.

Of course, but my point is that...
the other alternatives were explained by someone else if he, in fact, was not aware of them on his own.

teams will get what they want
I don’t buy the argument about the Rangers deep farm system effecting trades. If a team wants someone like Blalock, Catalanotto, Byrd, etc. they will do what it takes to get them. JD doesn’t have to trade anyone. As long as JD negotiates honestly and fairly, the deals will get done.

I think JD should negotiate fair and honest
only if that’s the best he can do!

Josey
maybe it’s repeated exposure, but at least I’m used to him.
Every time I read one of CLueless’s posts it’s like needles are being stabbed into my eyes.
Sounds painful
So you’re saying that you want a choirboy for a GM, rather than a cutthroat negotiator?
Or did you once again miss the point ? (no pun intended)

Oh, and FirebatM3
I may be in the running for most useless,
but as for mindless and thoughtless, you’ve assured me no worse than a 2nd-place finish.

As
inconsistent as relief pitchers are I say bring up W.Madrigal and see what he can do, this team needs some bullpen help, I also think in situations like tonight a tie game in the 6th you bring in D.Mathis, if he’s here he needs to pitch more often!
No
We were down by one run with runners on 1st and 2nd. That situation screams FX2. He has been lights out this year and last when entering with runners on base. At that point we were still trying to keep the game close to have a chance to tie or win which we did the very next inning.

Madrigal...
look I think this guy will be a quality big league reliever but some here think he is going to come up and be K-Rod or some shit. He hasn’t been lights out in limited action at OKC so far. He still needs some more time, but when he is ready he certainly won’t come up and go into the closers role right away, as others have suggested.
As far as Mathis goes he should only come into a tie game if he is the only option because the bullpen is used up. He is the mop up guy, that’s his role.
