Shouldn't have let Hurley start the inning

FX2 has sucked lately, but still, you can’t leave Hurley in that long.

by lonestarJon on Jun 18, 2008 8:36 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Training wheels off, fine

But he was at 96 pitches, and pretty clearly outta gas.

by lonestarJon on Jun 18, 2008 8:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So

you let him pitch until either a runner gets on or he reaches 105-110 pitches. Its one of those subtle messages you send your guys that you are going to stay with them when they have only given up 2 runs in the first 5 innings. Now should he have been left in there after the walk. I think he should have been pulled personally but to start the inning is fine by my count.

Although the reason why they were willing to trade Salty is that McCann is there

by Telegraph on Jun 18, 2008 9:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McCann just got his chance to develop before Salty did, because he didn’t get traded to a team that tried to make him play first base.

TRADE SALTY

Who will bring more in return, and let Laird, Teagarden and Mad Max duke it out for the catching job.

Christ, the Braves were playing him at 1B before they traded him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 18, 2008 9:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Only because they didn't have anywhere else to play him

When Salty came here, Laird was sucking ass at the plate. There was no reason for us to continue to play him at first base.

by lonestarJon on Jun 18, 2008 9:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Except for the fact...

...that we didn’t have a first baseman, and did have a relatively young catcher in the majors the organization thought highly of.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 18, 2008 9:06 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We had Wilkerson playing first base

Laird should have been pushed to the backup role for at least the month of September. It was a mistake to play Salty at first base, we all know that.

by lonestarJon on Jun 18, 2008 9:08 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Development?

Laird was useless at the plate back then. He may have turned it around this season, but at the end of last year, his performance and our place in the standings did not warrant him being behind the plate.

by lonestarJon on Jun 18, 2008 9:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rare Gnats Sex

except

Salty couldn’t throw out anybody on the basepaths which, given our pitching staff, is a pretty big attribute to have. It doesn’t matter how nice you can frame pitches if you let guys run all over you you are hurting the team from behind the plate

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on Jun 18, 2008 9:08 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

im fine with that

I was pointing to the fact that LSJ likes to point to Saltys OPS and that is largely due to him walking alot. Walking is fine if you aren’t being followed by German Duran or Chris Shelton. Salty is supposed to be an offensive stud well I haven’t seen much to substantiate it yet

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 18, 2008 9:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On base percentage is more important than slugging

If a guy walks a lot, you put him in a position so that German and Shelton are not the ones following him

by Telegraph on Jun 18, 2008 9:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

walks

they are good if you have a murphy or bradley or hamilton behind you. but if you are in the bottom of the order you should be looking to hit any pitches that are good. Not saying id rather him strike out than walk but it seems to me he is almost too selective sometimes and when you are batting 8th thats not really a good thing

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 18, 2008 9:13 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If that's the case

No young players should be allowed to have high walk counts, since they are start batting 8th or 9th

You don’t take your young players out of their comfort zone just to accommodate some temporary arrangement in the batting order

by Telegraph on Jun 18, 2008 9:15 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

thats not what i am saying

i don’t have a problem with Salty having a good eye. but sometimes it seems he is too selective and although he gets on base it is actually detrimental to the team. Tell me who would you rather have Salty with the bases empty or Duran with Salty on first? Walking is fine trust me. But for this supposed offensive stud of a catcher all he is showing me is a good eye and very little else. That isn’t “studly” in my book. Jason Botts walked alot but that was it. For all the accoladed Salty gets about his offense I want to see more from him than strolling down to 1st base.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

its because he is older and was ahead in the system. Sorta like MaxRam and Teagarden right now

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

yeah they are

Salty was a level behind McCann. Actually a couple levels behind him. So I guess you could say its more like Pina or Santana and Teagarden. Im not comparing offensive or defensive abilities just timelines.

51 hours without sleep... that's my record...

hang in there… in the overall scheme of things, this will be important to your development as a civilian in American society.

it doesn't explain why

but my guess would be that a batter has more control over his patience, but less control over the balls he hit (if he’s hitting it at a fielder, or finding a gap).

but, that doesn’t mean that a walk is more valuable than single. a single can move runners over. it just means that walks correlate more with better players.

Something about
