well that was unfortunate
i think it was good to give him a shot at it though, given how bad our pen is anyway.
Bring up Justin Smoak
i don't think pc
is an issue with him. especially because he gets stronger as the game goes on…
Stats don't lie
Really?
You’d leave him out there for 125-130 pitches?

Okay
What is the upper limit on the number of pitches you’d leave him out there for?
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 18, 2008 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions
what you said
i think you could leave him out there every 5th day for about 120 or so pitches. Not if he’s getting bombed though..
Stats don't lie
One walk
He walked Johnson, and then allowed the hit. He wasn’t gonna be staying out there for no 120 pitches.
good stuff
at least its not mathis or worse tejeda…

Shouldn't have let Hurley start the inning
FX2 has sucked lately, but still, you can’t leave Hurley in that long.
sometimes you have to take the training wheels off...
by oc on Jun 18, 2008 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions
So
you let him pitch until either a runner gets on or he reaches 105-110 pitches. Its one of those subtle messages you send your guys that you are going to stay with them when they have only given up 2 runs in the first 5 innings. Now should he have been left in there after the walk. I think he should have been pulled personally but to start the inning is fine by my count.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
the 5th was one of his best innings...
how did he look out of gas? once he did look so in the 6th they pulled him.

If the Rangers would let him play full-time.
My point is, McCann and Salty have the same skill-set its just that McCann is more developed.
That's not saying much
considering the list of catchers in the NL.

.......mccann is an all star right now
is that supposed to be a downer on salty?
Bring up Justin Smoak
McCann is further along than Salty
Similar kinds of prospects in the minors I believe
Someone asked if we would still the make the Teix trade
if Atlanta swapped Salty w/ McCann.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.
Yeah, there was not a chance that would happen
Although the reason why they were willing to trade Salty is that McCann is there
Same skill set
McCann just got his chance to develop before Salty did, because he didn’t get traded to a team that tried to make him play first base.
No, you come on
If Salty got a chance at some consistent playing time, McCann is the type of player he’d have a shot at being.
ok
well hes got Gerald Laird in front of him. Beat him out and then we’ll talk
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
TRADE SALTY
Who will bring more in return, and let Laird, Teagarden and Mad Max duke it out for the catching job.
Christ, the Braves were playing him at 1B before they traded him.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 18, 2008 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Only because they didn't have anywhere else to play him
When Salty came here, Laird was sucking ass at the plate. There was no reason for us to continue to play him at first base.
Except for the fact...
...that we didn’t have a first baseman, and did have a relatively young catcher in the majors the organization thought highly of.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 18, 2008 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions
We had Wilkerson playing first base
Laird should have been pushed to the backup role for at least the month of September. It was a mistake to play Salty at first base, we all know that.
Development?
Laird was useless at the plate back then. He may have turned it around this season, but at the end of last year, his performance and our place in the standings did not warrant him being behind the plate.
except
Salty couldn’t throw out anybody on the basepaths which, given our pitching staff, is a pretty big attribute to have. It doesn’t matter how nice you can frame pitches if you let guys run all over you you are hurting the team from behind the plate
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Or...
They could keep it the way it is and keep the two catcher scenerio for the rest of the year. It seems to be working well so far.

oooooh ooooooooh
But he walks alot
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
i actually don't have a problem with the platoon
but if he’s going to need more playing time to really develop, trade him and get it over with.
Rare Gnats Sex
im fine with that
I was pointing to the fact that LSJ likes to point to Saltys OPS and that is largely due to him walking alot. Walking is fine if you aren’t being followed by German Duran or Chris Shelton. Salty is supposed to be an offensive stud well I haven’t seen much to substantiate it yet
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
On base percentage is more important than slugging
If a guy walks a lot, you put him in a position so that German and Shelton are not the ones following him
walks
they are good if you have a murphy or bradley or hamilton behind you. but if you are in the bottom of the order you should be looking to hit any pitches that are good. Not saying id rather him strike out than walk but it seems to me he is almost too selective sometimes and when you are batting 8th thats not really a good thing
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If that's the case
No young players should be allowed to have high walk counts, since they are start batting 8th or 9th
You don’t take your young players out of their comfort zone just to accommodate some temporary arrangement in the batting order
thats not what i am saying
i don’t have a problem with Salty having a good eye. but sometimes it seems he is too selective and although he gets on base it is actually detrimental to the team. Tell me who would you rather have Salty with the bases empty or Duran with Salty on first? Walking is fine trust me. But for this supposed offensive stud of a catcher all he is showing me is a good eye and very little else. That isn’t “studly” in my book. Jason Botts walked alot but that was it. For all the accoladed Salty gets about his offense I want to see more from him than strolling down to 1st base.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
alright im heading out so this conversation will have to be put on hold.
Go Rangers
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
ya but Laird is
he’s playing far better than he did with no one up to challenge and the Rangers as a team started doing better around the time they went ti this situatuin.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
yeah they are
Salty was a level behind McCann. Actually a couple levels behind him. So I guess you could say its more like Pina or Santana and Teagarden. Im not comparing offensive or defensive abilities just timelines.

Stats don't lie
it doesn't explain why
but my guess would be that a batter has more control over his patience, but less control over the balls he hit (if he’s hitting it at a fielder, or finding a gap).
but, that doesn’t mean that a walk is more valuable than single. a single can move runners over. it just means that walks correlate more with better players.

Chad Bradford
used to come out to The Fray’s “I’m in over my head.” That would fit for our bullpen.
Once again:
CJ Wilson is NOT a closer. He’s a starter masquerading.
Closers have a strikeout pitch.
CJ doesn’t have a strikeout pitch. His fastball is an out pitch that would serve him well as a starter, but closers need strikeout pitches.
Every day Eddie closes, CJ to the rotation. How freaking hard is that?
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Good point
But even if Eddie gets by as a closer in the Todd Jones mode, that’s better than wasting a guy who could be a good starter by pretending he’s not a bad closer.

To answer my own question...
...the last time Guardado went two innings was in 2004. At TBIA, coincidentally enough.

Oh.
I never thought of it like that.

Cj is pitching a long inning so shouldnt he be out of the game
CJ just needs to hit the shower
Before he gets his ass pounded my OMFT.

Well, atleast Hurley looked good...
I would rather keep losing instead of keeping some of the guys that are fringe trade/keep guys. Build of 09 on, dont try to keep this going
yeah
dont count on being good in ‘09 or ‘10
you know that those will just be “rebuilding years” like usual
Let's just tank every game from here on out.
Then it’s Strasburg time biznatches.
this is really irritating
when it was an error and a single.. ok… but now a triple and a walk. blah.

That happens every where.
Blame nationally televised Ted Turner Braves, and his flashy “TBS” superstation.
yep
the Cubs have sucked forever and they have a crapload of fans because of WGN being a nationally broadcast station…
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
So Ohio State is a franchise?
..... hmmm… makes sense about the whole money flow, paying players and recruits thing….

I wonder how many are "new" Braves fans
I imagine most of them are band wagoners from the Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux days.

Boy, fans can't win with you, AJM
They boo a Brave, you write a scathing frontpage missive about how dumb it is.
Then people cheer the Braves and you go nuts on them too.

Shelton
Somebody better pinch hit for Shelton, the last thing I want to see his is ass at the plate in the bottom of the ninth
i dont care if bradley will only walk to first on a ball hit into play
please bat him in this inning. pinch run if he walks.
