Minors 6/19
I didn't see a discussion thread up yet for today's games so....
Davis is 0-0, 2BB
Cruz is 2-2, 2B
Max Ram is 2-2, 2B
Beavan has given up 1 ER through 3 IP, with 2BBs though.
Bakersfield and Spokane both going later tonight.
Man, I can't even believe how much more excited I am about following the minor league teams this year than I have been in the past. Pure greatness!

Best thing so far about this thread
2 BB for Davis.

what makes following the minors even more fun
is that it’s pretty apparent that there are some nice young pieces on the ML team that will be in their primes (or tradeable) when these kids are ready to make the jump.
Kinsler
Hamilton
Murphy
Salty
Duran
Boggs
C.J.
Hurley
Rupe

Ouch:
58. Elvis Andrus, SS, Rangers
Eligible Next Year? Yes
Production: .269/.328/.324 at Double-A (53 G)
Stock Report: Down significantly. Scouts are tired of hearing about how young and toolsy he is; he’s at Double-A and it’s time to produce.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 19, 2008 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Significantly?
That’s a bit harsh. He’s not producing, but you’d think his overall body of work (tools and age included as repetitive as it has surely become) would count for something.
It's amazing
Elvis is 5 months younger than Neftali Feliz and 2 levels up, but a .274 hitter has his stock significantly down? Really?
I don't understand it either

Good take
I also think a really important indicator of success for young guys is their ability to drive the ball. Andrus has a 16% LD, the highest of his career. What’s holding him back is that 66% of the balls he puts in play are on the ground. As he gets stronger, that number will decrease, and you’ll see more gap power.
You’d think, after he got completely burned by his Justin Upton and Cameron Maybin predictions, that Goldstein would be at least a bit more receptive to toolsy position guys in their teens.
Did I miss the comparison of his Myrtle Beach stats to...
his Frisco stats? He’s having a fractionally better start to his season in AA than he did in High A. Not to mention that he dealt with an early hip problem and a more recently broken finger.
I guess that’s the problem with a mid-season review.
by NoNameOnCard on Jun 20, 2008 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions
Good point
Remember that Myrtle Beach is relatively pitcher-friendly, however, while Frisco (and the Texas League in general) is a bit more hitter-friendly. Don’t have the exact park factors in front of me, however.
It's notable to me
that Andrus has maintained all of his rate stats while advancing a level at that young age.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
another
62. Engel Beltre, OF, Rangers
Eligible Next Year? Yes
Production: .271/.296/.399 at Low-A
Stock Report: Down a touch. His tools remain out of this world and he’s just 18, but his approach is so awful (49 Ks against five walks) that he becomes a bigger project than was originaly expected.
Rare Gnats Sex
finishing it off
unchanged on main (obviously), really high on davis (obviously), slightly lower on TT because of drop in power and arm strength

Davis has a SB
to go along with the 2 BB.

From BA's AAA dish this morning
Davis, also 22, kept his 14-game hitting streak alive in Oklahoma’s 13-9 win against Nashville. But he didn’t settle for a couple singles—instead he blasted two home runs in five at-bats, driving in four and giving him nine Triple-A round-trippers and 22 total on the year. He’s crushed five home runs in his past five games and now is hitting .356/.410/.733 for the RedHawks in 90 at-bats.
Prospect Nuggets
Oklahoma C Taylor Teagarden (Rangers) was 1-for-4 with a home run (five), two RBIs and two runs. Defensively, he allowed a passed ball and caught one of two basestealers, making him 10-for-35 (29 percent) on the year
BA's AA daily dish
Frisco (Rangers) righthander Thomas Diamond’s return to the mound continued last night, although it hasn’t been easy after a year off following Tommy John surgery. Yesterday Diamond allowed five hits, three walks and three runs in five innings. Diamond struck out four, giving him a 27-22 K-BB ratio and a 6.08 ERA in 26 2/3 innings through six starts
Beaven
Got himself into a spot of trouble in the 6th, but struck out the side (I think) after giving up an unearned run. He doubled his walks total for the season tonight, giving up 3 in 6 innings.
As always, I hope someone finds out what his velo was for this start.
Low A MILB box scores...
get screwed up often… Beavan came out after 5 IP. It was Dennis who hit the rough spot and struck out the side in the 6th.
No idea on velocity.

Who out of the DSL box scores from today i should be looking at?
Im not hip on the young Latinos like some other guys, so i dont know who i should be excited about in the DSL today
A few guys
RHP Pepe Sibid (6’0’’ 200) 7Ks in 6 IP
1B/C Alison Perez (.375/.407/.458)
2/5 today
Switch hitting catcher Tomas Telis went 1/4
How am I supposed to feel about that?
It seems like every positive has a negative to counter it. It seems obvious that he didn’t actually pitch.

Bad days
Kiker has actually pitched better than his statistical line would indicate. His fastball consistently breaks bats but he gives up dinky infield hits that cloud the overall line. He was a little wild tonight but his stuff is very good. I’d like to see hi aggressively promoted to Frisco before the year is out.
For Kasey
to go to AA, someone not named Neftali Feliz would probably have to move up to Bakersfield.
Heh
non-prospects but general good guys Truan Mehl and K.C. Herren hits their first homers of the season for Bakersfield.
Mario Gomez also homers, tied 8-8.
Julio Borbon is 2-4
That brings Herren's XBH total to...
5

Whoa, there
Vallejo had a hot April, but has really cooled off since then. You need to seriously think about what you said. You do NOT trade one of the best 2B in the league and one of the best players on your team to make room for a guy doing moderately well in high-A ball.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
Right
That mindset is why I expect to get mostly votes against with regard to the Greinke idea I floated this morning.

You mean
no on the KC side, I assume? I’d say no if I were them, just because I think they have more young bats than great young arms right now. Of course, I haven’t been paying close attention to their system, but that’s the way it seemed last fall.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
Must be
cause I don’t know how you don’t make that deal from our side.

It is a lot to give up
I love me some Hurley, and I think Salty has a good chance to be a very good starting catcher.
But if you want a good young starting pitcher you have to pay for it. Look at the Haren deal. Look at what it took to get Josh Beckett. I know those guys are both more highly rated than Grienke, but it’s in the same ballpark.

Greinke
Flyballer without the high K rate. He’s young, he’s talented, he’s also got that issue which makes him a legit trade target, a la Hamilton.
I just think there’s a young pitcher available for that haul who’s better suited for Arlington.

The guy to watch right now at 2b
is Osuna in clinton.
that dude is tearing it up. 2-4 with a double last night.
.361 for the season.

Playing devil's advocate
He is doing well, but he is older than Vallejo, too, turned 23 in April, still in low A. I’d really like to see Osuna and Gac promoted very soon to see what they can do. With Gac, though, you have to weigh what you want to do with Smoak a bit. I’d put Smoak in Clinton for a while with Gac in high-A, personally, for a few months.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
the difference is like 6 months in age...

No, the difference is
a year and five months AND Osuna, the older one, is playing at a lower level.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
yeah ur right i thought it was less than that
still that difference in age is minimal really but i agree with ya. i wish Vallejo would get back on his tear. Osuna is still hitting quite well in clinton, they both need to get promoted but if Jose struggles it clogs up 2b….
awe well i just hope for the best.

No
You don’t place Smoak based on Gac. Smoak is a much better prospect and his path should not be blocked or held back so a journeyman fringe prospect can play at a higher level.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
+1
And if you really want Gac in High-A, send him there and let him DH while Smoak plays 1b.
Gac’s offensive progression is infinitely more important than his defensive progression.

It might be a month before promotions. It seems like it would be worth it to keep guys like Mauro Gomez, Restko, and Tracy around as thow-ins if a trade goes down. I guess one or more could be demoted, but that doesn’t seem to make much sense given their age. If they aren’t ready to go up to AA when Gac/Smoak move into hi-A, either trade them or release them.
I didn't place Smoak based on Gac
but I am already rethinking that idea. Smoak can probably start higher, and I don’t think Gac should be in his way any more than Mauro Gomez.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
heh
I said almost.
I wouldn’t trade Kinsler.
and I definitely wouldn’t trade him just to make room for Vallejo. LOL…come on now. Looking back at my post I realize that I definitely should have worded it differently. I should have said “guys like Vallejo almost make me willing to trade Kinsler.” because it isn’t him specifically that makes me feel that way…it’s the ridiculous organizational depth that we have at the middle infield positions that makes me feel that way.
My line of thinking is Kinsler is probably the best trade chip that we have right now. We could get an EXCELLENT starting pitcher for him and we’d still have plenty of options for 2B for now and for the future with guys like Vasquez/Young/Arias/Duran/Osuna and yes…Vallejo.
With that being said, I still wouldn’t trade Kinsler.

"If you ain't got no money, ain't nobody calls you honey," Bo Diddley
Good stuff.
The one thing that sticks out to me, besides the scap load, is that his hands seem more connected to his hips than the few times I saw him in Spokane. At Spokane, he had a longer swing than in that video, and even in his torrid stretches, when he would go 10 for 12 with 8 doubles and HR, he really lengthened his swing when he tried to take a pitch deep and sometimes couldn’t even catch up to fastballs that registered high 80s on the Spokane jumbotron.
I’m not the expert on swing mechanics that this author is. All I can say is that the thing that looks different to me is that when his hips swivel his hands also begin to move; whereas when I saw him in Spokane it looked to me that he kept his hands back after his hips swiveled. Keeping your hands back when your hips swivel is one way to stretch and get some power, but it also means your hands have to travel farther. Maybe he is now using a scap load rather than hip twist to stretch. Whatever the case, his swing looks more compact than before, and it seems fairly compact for a power hitter. In this video it reminds me a bit of Thome’s swing, though Thome swings even harder if that’s possible.
Short stroke
Hands stay back…bat meets ball, not ball meets bat.
Very good.

Rudy
Now, his swing does have some length in it, but I don’t think his swing is that long. There is a bit of noise, but it doesn’t hinder Davis much. Small adjustments may be needed but nothing substantial.
