Minors 6/2--a/k/a the Chris Davis show
Chris Davis just hit a grand slam....just thought I'd share! :-)
Not the greatest outing for Kason.
blah, blah, blah......
blah, blah....
Well, since I am killing space...
Slightly off topic, but does anyone think the Rangers have plans to call Jason Botts up at any point this season or have they written him off?
It's really hot here today....90's....and yet we have day baseball? I just don't get it.
Have I hit 75 words YET?!?!?

I was prepared to post
that Chris Davis looks completely overmatched at the next level, and then he did that. I would still love to see him get hot, have a multi-hit game or two, and maybe do something against a decent pitcher, but still, the clutch GS was nice to see.
Teagarden is doing nothing for me right now. I really hope he breaks out of this season long funk.
Gabbard ended up going 7. I imagine they are having him focus on throwing certain pitches in certain situations, to see if he can depend on them. He seemed to dominate at times, and finished with 7 Ks and a 12:2 G:F. The second HR, a two out, three run show by the nine hole hitter, was what killed him.

Teagarden
Season long funk? His first few weeks in OKC were terrific, and included a 15-game hitting streak. The slow start can be at least partly blamed on his wrist injury in spring training, and he seems recovered from that. Take out the injury and you’re really just worried about the last week.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Strikeouts
I assumed that is what Clark meant by funk? He’s my boy, but he does seem to have a lot of them….I think they’ll go down once he gets used to AAA pitching though.

Indeed
He seems overly passive at the plate at times. I admit I don’t follow the Hawks too closely, but the times i have followed them on milb’s gametracker, it seems like Teagarden watches too many strikes early in the count and gets himself into a hole. But I did forget about that hitting streak. I am certainly not saying we should cut him, but I would love to see him make more consistant contact, so that we can justify having him on the big league roster in september.

But, as I said yesterday
his K rate is actually lower than last year’s stints in Frisco and OKC right now, and about the same as his time in Bakersfield. I’m not saying I like it, but it’s nothing new for him, so I’m just wondering why you’re saying he’s doing nothing for you “this year”. This is what he does.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Agree
that the K rate is always high, but last year he had a combined OPS of 1.012. this year it is at .680, and at .751 in OKC. For him to K that much, he has to maintain extraordinary walk rates and power numbers (essentially a three true outcomes type guy) and he has not done that this year. Granted, it is still early, and granted, because of his position, he does not necessarily have to have an OPS over 1.000 to be valuable. But one over .800 would be nice.
by clark on Jun 2, 2008 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, it was over .800
until a couple of days ago, small sample and all that. I posted my OKC May summary just two days ago and his OPS has dropped .130 points since. A few good games and he’ll be right back up there. I don’t expect him to be more than an average hitting catcher with great defense anyway. He’s probably Laird-like with the bat, but with much better framing and overall defensive skills.

Overmatched..
If you don’t follow the Redhawks too closely, and only watch on gametracker, then how did you come to the conclusion that Davis was overmatched at the plate in AAA as you stated above?
by Topgun22 on Jun 2, 2008 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
admittedly,
I was jumping to a conclusion there. but until that last AB, he had gone GIDP, K, GO for the game against AAA roster filler. I am spoiled from last year, when he actually thrived upon his jump to AA ball. Still, taken in sum, his performance so far at OKC, over a small sample size, looks pretty decent (that grand slam helps).

Botts
He’ll be thrown into some deadline deal, if not something sooner. Never to wear the T again.

Who'd want him?
He’ll be released soon, I imagine.

Botts and/or Gold
need to be let go to make room at OKC for Ramirez.

Dan will say it's the "me" factor...
As Taylor is my favorite and Chris is soon to be my 2nd favorite. As I told Jeff yesterday, this is the first time I can remember where I actually had favorites who were huge prospects…
BDav: yeah, unfortunately I am thinking the same thing. :-(

Was he really a huge prospect in 1999-2002?
I know he had a good 1998 (and was on the BA Top 100), but all I really remember people talking about was Ruben Mateo. I wasn’t really following the system all that closely in the beginning so he may have been and I just don’t remember. Are you trying to tell me that at one point Adam Morris was hyping Kelly as the next big thing??
?

This started
a half hour spent going through the baseball cube’s website, looking at the state of our minor league system in 1999. Ruben Mateo is heartbreaking. If Angel Beltre advances a level each year, arrives at AAA, puts up an OPS in the high 9s, and then finds disaster, I will cry.
And as for our pitchers, it is just amazing how many guys in our system in the late 90’s seemed to put up solid numbers at various levels (Lee, Knight, Glynn, Davis, Perisho, etc) only to hit walls in the upper levels. It sort of tempers my enthusiasm about the pitching we have now in Clinton.
by clark on Jun 2, 2008 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh
There is no real parallel between those guys and the ClintonSpokane group. Now there is some similarity between them and a group that was actually down in rookie/A ball at that time, Colby Lewis, Ryan Dittfurth, Jovanny Cedeno and David Mead. Throw Andy Pratt in there if you want a Derek Holland comp (though the similarity probably ends after them both being lefties and more 5th-10th round type talents. And Benoit was in like HA at that point, so maybe include him as, say, a Fabio Castillo comp.
Lewis and Mead were first rounders, Dittfurth was a very projectable arm, and Cedeno was the Latin phenom. All had their careers ruined by shoulder blow-outs (well, the three good ones…Mead just wasn’t very good).
As far as the guys you’re mentioning, they compare much better with guys higher in the system, Harrison, AJ Murray, Tommy Hunter, Omar Poveda, Zach Phillips, Josh Rupe, Kam Loe. Low upside guys who could be mid/back-roto guys if everything works out. Everything worked out for Davis and didn’t for Lee, Glynn or Perisho. If one out of Harrison, Murray, Hunter and Rupe has the career that Doug Davis has, I’d be satisfied with the group.

Prospect Success Rate
I feel like the success rate modern day prospects is much higher now than about 10 years ago. Especially the top tier prospects tend to perform up to their capabilities.

There was a point
he was one of the Rangers top 2 or 3 prospects. That may say more about how weak the farm was at times under Doug Melvin.

CD
i was hoping to click the box score and see 2-4 without a K or something.
oh well, if you are going to go 1-4 with a K it might as well be a grand slam. a good 3 or 4 game run and his numbers will be fine.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

Sorry!
But it was a grand slam and the game winner, so I was excited! LOL

Clinton
They scored 5 runs in the 1st, 3 coming on Ian Gac’s 16th HR. Kennil Gomez is on the mound and is looking for his 8th win. So far so good.

Not one of
Kennil’s better efforts

it defintely wasn't
atleast he can still get the “W” though.
by Butters on Jun 2, 2008 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it should be noted
that the guy who did most of the damage, Kyle Martin, is four years older than Gomez. He graduated last year from Texas Tech.
by clark on Jun 2, 2008 9:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
You know, that is something that probably doesn’t get mentioned enough with respect to Clinton. They have done a lot of good things this season with a pretty young team. Even Gac is 22, not all that old for the MWL. But Beltre, Feliz, Gomez, Castillo, etc. are some of the younger guys in the league.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 2, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Youngest in league, I think
Youngest pitching staff, 2nd youngest position players according to B-ref. Ironically, the team could get older if some of these guys get promoted this summer and “new” guys come in.

Tough day for Rangers pitchers
Five starts, five poundings. Kennil and Kason actually had the best starts of the day.
Not many bright spots on the farm as a whole today. Some bats hit well in Clinton, and Davis had his granny. That’s about it folks.
