Sickels' Mock Draft
http://www.minorleagueball.com/2008/6/2/544313/john-s-mock-draft#comments
Hosmer falls to the Rangers, Alonso falls to 17 (Blue Jays) and Hunt falls to 21(Tigers, of course). Hicks sneaks up to Nats at 9, and the Astros take Friedrich.
As opposed to the fan's mock, in which Wade Miley fell past the Rangers in the 3rd round, Sickels has him going at the top of the supplemental first. It looks like the Sup round will be filled with intriguing HS players. Still, looking at this year against last year, I am glad the Rangers had their 5 picks last year.

Hey Jamey
Already called you out in the other draft thread…in case you didn’t see it, who are you hoping the Rangers get?
Go Strangers.
Hicks?
That’s surprising. I love the tools, but raw tools HS’ers scare the shit out of me. You must believe in the bat. If he’s more Jason Heyward than Greg Golson or CJ Henry I’d be down with that.
The 40 trumps all!!!
He's a totally different player from Heyward though
I think we’d have to use a different positive comp. Burgess?

Yah
You’re right, he’s much different than Heyward. Not sure if Burgess fits either, though. Burgess always profiled more as a RF, whereas Hicks has pure CF speed.
He’s more in the “Terrific athlete with raw bat skills group”. Maybin and Andrew “Royce” McCutchen both come to mind, but they were much more highly touted.
How about Adam Jones? Fantastic athlete with some questions about his bat, but not too many. Plus some teams liked Jones more as a pitcher, same with Hicks. I like that comp quite a bit. Let’s roll with it.

Yeah you're right
I think that BA used the Jones comparison too, since they are both from California.

My ideal is for Hosmer or Alonso to drop to us
His projection that both fall to us presents a nice choice to work with.
(my dream, on the other hand, is that Alvarez or Matusz fall for no good reason, as some mocks have shown them dropping out of the top 5. But I’m too much of a realist to hope for that)
I would like to point out how happy I am that we don’t have a pick around #25 where I’d be stressed that we’d draft Jemile Weeks…
One thing to rememeber about last year's picks
is that the compensation round last year was CRAZY long, so those second two picks were really second rounders. Neil Ramirez went 44th, and TB’s first pick in the second round this year is the 47th. Heck Tomm Hunter went 54th, right? Our second rounder this year 57th.
Not that it really affects anything, just interesting to note.

I'd crap/piss/cream myself
if we got Matusz.

How quickly do you think he would get to Arlington?

While I don't think there's any way we get Matusz...
I’m starting to feel more and more confident that one of Crow, Alonso or Hosmer will be there when we pick.
You like Alanso
as much as Crow and Handsome Hoss?
Not saying you’re wrong, as it’s all projection, but I just find it interesting.
The 40 trumps all!!!
Hung Hosmer
I just don’t think he falls past the Royals at #3. If he does, and Crow is also available, I would assume the Rangers go for the arm. What say you?
Let's say TB takes Posey
and the Pirates take Beckham. KC then has the choice between Alvarez and Hosmer, and I think they’d take Hosmer.
Even if Alvarez doesn’t fall to them, they could also take Smoak if they want to go the cheap route.
It’s possible he falls past KC.
Messed that up.
I meant I think they take Alvarez in the first scenario.
I think there's very little chance the The Big Hoss Man falls to us
like almost none.
I’d have a tough time deciding between him and Crow. I haven’t done a ton of research on Crow, just cause I never thought he’d have a realistic chance at falling to us.
I have no idea how the Rangers view Crow, but if they view him as anywhere near the super-elite talent that Hosmer is, then I’d go for him just cause a college arm that good is always valuable. How good do you think Crow is?
The 40 trumps all!!!
Crow
I don’t think he is super elite but I do think he has a good shot to be a major league pitcher. Good size and projection with three pitches that could eventually grade above average. His fastball has the makings of a plus pitch. I heard he can hit the mid 90s but he sits in the 92-94 range. Hard slider that he often throws into hitter’s batspeed at 85-87. A good feel for a change up. Some mechanical issues that affect command. Could move fast.
I doubt he falls to us but I would be tempted to pick Crow over Hosmer.
probably this weekend
lol….but in all seriousness he could be a late summer call up in ‘09 if he’s as beasty as I think he is.
Yonder Alonso and The U are playing on ESPN U.
If anyone wants to get a sneak peak at another possible Rangers selection.
