Rotation drama
Vicente Padilla is still in Nicaragua tending to a family issue, so lefty A.J. Murray will start tomorrow. Padilla should pitch at some point this weekend, though the club isn't sure when.Kevin Millwood also has a "personal issue" to deal with on Wednesday, so he'll start Thursday and Sidney Ponson will pitch on three days rest. So in a week where the bullpen may be needed, the Rangers sure would like Doug Mathis to give them some innings tonight.
Given Ron Washington's comments yesterday, one would assume room will be made for Murray by putting Padilla on the bereavement list. And conventional wisdom has it that sinkerballs like Ponson aren't really hurt that much by going on short rest.
Still...this whole thing is kind of a mess. And if Mathis can't go very long today, expect a move tomorrow to get a fresh arm back up here.

Millwood, too?
Good, Lord, the Rangers need to plan on having at least 12 ML-quality starting pitchers each year. Mathis, Ponson, Feldman, Murray are all in the rotation at the same time? Astonishing.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

This is not good timing for this.....
the next few days should really determine how well Washington and JD can manage a pitching staff.
This ought to be interesting.

In days of late
the Rangers bullpen has done well despite itself

Curious
Has there been any word on exactly whats happening in Padilla’s personal life, not that its any of our business but for a guy who usually feeds off of his emotions I hope this isn’t something tragic or especially hard on Vincente. I think the guy is probably crazy but I really do hope the best for him He’s just one of those intresting characters in sports I love to follow.

is it
the greasy hair? Or the ability to throw without any personality at all…

It's the attitude
and I find it nothing short of hysterical.

all of the above
Plus his refusal to speak to teammates, random name changes, tendency to throw at opponents, and the fact that when he’s on he has the best stuff on the team.

Sheesh
Millwood’s the one that makes me wonder the most. Everyone needs a day off, and since it’s a “personal issue” I’m guessing it must be important, but we sure could use that guy. The rotation should only be in flux for 3-4 days, but every game is important.

every game
is important. This truth lies around the corner when the Rangers face “real” opponents. Red Sox. Yankees. I am so excited for our guys this year…however, I feel a looming test coming soon. And I really don’t know if Washington has the stuff to withstand it.

real opponents?
Have you noticed this?
Tampa Bay: 35-22
Boston: 35-24
and
Oakland: 30-27
Yankees: 28-28

They are 12th
in the AL this season, so they haven’t really been clicking all year. We are last in pitching, though, so something’s gotta give.

Why is it
always assumed that a pitcher coming up from AAA is a “fresh arm”?

Rotation...
could be better but I’m content with Millwood, Padilla, Ponson, Feldman for now. It would be nice to find one more decent starter though. I think that guy could be the Pirate. Mathis needs to go back to AAA. He isn’t ready.
My problem is the shitty ass bullpen. I’ve had it with these guys coming in and either walking everyone or giving up hit after hit. BGL has pitched better lately and Eddie has been ok but everyone so up and down. The Rangers are going to lose a lot of these fucking 13-9/8 games unless the ‘pen gets their shit together.

Adam's commentary on walks
Needs to be widely published. Over on the NMLR forum there is a minor league topic about who do you want in this draft. Couldn’t help posting “Take pitchers in the first six rounds, but don’t let the Rangers’ staff choose ‘em. Pay the Braves, Phillies, Diamondbacks, Padres, Cardinals, and Twins to each make one pick. Ignore signability, just get the best six projectables (in other teams’ opinion). Then fire Connor, Chiti, Wash, and anyone else who has anything to do with pitcher readiness at the MLB level. If any Ranger employee touches a phone or speaks aloud during the draft, they have to stay in a Nolan Ryan headlock for at least one hour, complete with nouggies.
