Friday a.m. things
And...back to .500. Again.
Richard Durrett's game story is about C.J. Wilson and his struggles of late. Ron Washington is quoted as saying that he's got to talk to Mark Connor and Dom Chiti about the situation before deciding if Wilson should continue closing, while Nolan Ryan is quoted as saying that Wilson should remain the team's closer. Wilson pitched in every game in the Atlanta series, and the fact that this was his third straight outing would normally be a mitigating circumstances, but on the heels of an awful outing on Wednesday, there are obviously red flags.
Milton Bradley's status is still up in the air, and he may still be out for tonight's game. However, Joaquin Benoit is available tonight, for the first time since his last outing on June 7.
And T.R. Sullivan has some Friday blogginess up.

I did not really see any disagreement there
Wash was just very non-committal, while Nolan basically said that no one who would be better was available right now. I would not take either one as a high vote of confidence.

Aren't those two statements mutually exclusive
Nolan is committing and Wash isn’t. Seems like Wash really hasn’t made up his mind but Nolan has made up his mind for him (since he is boss). I’m not exactly sure who should have the power to decide who the closer’s going to be but it seems like Wash thought he did (why he says he needs to ask Chiti and Connor). But, Nolan making that statement throws it into flux.
People think Cuban is meddling, but I never heard Cuban say “Terry should be the starter at PG”

and, obviously Nolan and Cuban have different jobs
but, we have yet to establish if Nolan’s job is personnel oriented.
and, if it is, he needs to get on the same page with his underlings so they don’t come out saying contradictory things

Well,
I think job security has a lot to do with this. If the Rangers tank, Nolan isn’t going anywhere, but Wash will likely be gone at the end of the season. Wash needs to win now and Nolan doesn’t and that is where the discrepancy lies, IMO.

Cuban never played the game
nor did he make Baseketball HOF.
Nolan knows a helluva lot more about pitching than either JD or Washington.

Yes, he knows more about pitching
but, speaking as a professional musician and teacher, I can tell you that not all great musicians are great evaluators and/or teachers. The greatest opera singers in the world, for example, still work often with teachers and voice coaches to hone their technique and preparation. I would not trust a great singer to cast an opera production, as they often have little idea what other singers are appropriate for roles, despite knowing their own repertoire very well.
I know a lot more about music than I do about baseball, but I think the comparison is apt. Classical singing is a very athletic endeavor, and takes years of focused training and practice to reach full potential. Likewise, just because Ryan was an awesome pitcher does not automatically mean he is a great evaluator of pitching talent, or of what role best suits a pitcher. He very well may be, but it is a fallacy to just assume he is based on his own success as a pitcher. That said, I think Ryan is right in saying leave Wilson alone, at least for now.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

I don't see a conflict here.
Ryan was asked apparently the same thing Washinton was and he answered. I think he is right in that “who else” can do it? Durrett juxtaposed their answers but I don’t believe Ryan’s statement was a direct conflict to Washington’s. Just two answers to apparently the same question and given their proximity in the article, Durrett may be intimating a conflict…but I don’t think these statements are a foundation for us to make that assumption. Maybe two different opinions, but no hidden meaning…

i'm not saying that they had a conference
came away with two different answers, and are now peddling their positions to the media.
My problem is that they had two different answers. And they are definitely in conflict – although maybe not in direct conflict. If one person says both of those things, it doesn’t really make any sense. Why do you need to talk to pitching coaches to figure out if your closer is going to pitch again if he’s the only person for the job?

OT: Ricciardi backtracks (surprise)
But not in a very good way:
“I let my guard down” said Ricciardi. “I apologize to him. I have to be better than that… Unfortunately, you get caught in the heat of the moment. I don’t even know Adam Dunn.”
1) Heat of the moment? You mean, an anonymous caller second guessing a hypothetical move you wouldn’t make and you just lose it? Ok, JP. Insecure much?
2) Let your guard down? As in, you really do think he doesn’t care about baseball? Not exactly a real apology there. “Even though you’re a bastard, I shouldn’t have said that in public…but you’re still a bastard.”

but this situation is not exactly trash talking. dunn didn’t say anything to ricciardi. ricciardi’s responding to some random caller and decides to bag on dunn, seemingly for a reason that he might not even believe – all because he feels inadequate as a GM.
but, I also expect decorum from upper management, even if it is an entertainment industry. your issue is that you think everybody is there for your amusement so its funny for them to act like jackasses. i have a bit more respect for them than that.

The two problems with that are
1> If your professional assessment is better than everyone else’s, it is in your interest to keep it to yourself and hope someone else overpays. Baseball is a zero-sum game, so when you have information about something that others don’t, it is in your interest not to blab it over the radio.
2> Its was just a stupid thing to say. Sure, everything he said may be valid, but when you are a household name, you have to avoid putting your foot in your mouth. Hearing someone “tell it like it is” may be refreshing, but that doesn’t make it the smart thing to do. Tact is very important in politics, and a lot of baseball is politics.

I imagine that a lot of guys are doing it. Major League Baseball pays so much that guys who may prefer to do something else will “sell out” to play ball – they’d be idiots not to.

this isn’t a critique of those guys – I don’t know when “loving your job” was a prerequisite for being good at it. Obviously it helps, but that alone isn’t everything. CJ
should not have been used on Wednesday, but because he was, he certainly should not have been used yesterday. between that and the shelton pinch hit embrolio, the heat should be squarely on Wash’s back, and not CJ. CJ is still the best option we have in our bullpen, and this is a year for playing our younger players, and being patient with players in new(ish) roles. There is no upside to taking him out of the closer’s role.
None.
Also, I am pretty disappointed that we let Tejeda go, and then could not use Benoit the entire series. I don’t think that got enough play in the press. Tejeda has a live arm, and we don’t have many of those in the upper levels. There is a long and sad history of arms like his finding firmer footing elsewhere and having success.

Tejeda
Does the fact that he didn’t get claimed by any other ML team make it any better. If he was such the difference maker that you think he is then why wouldn’t some other team snatch him up. The guy is what he is. A live arm with no idea where the ball is going and no consistancy.
The reason Benoit didn’t go on the DL is probably because the training staff and/or Benoit thought he would only be out a few days not two weeks. The GM isn’t the only person that has imput as to how bad guys are hurt and what should be done with them.

John Barten - THT Awards
Yesterday’s game could fill his column (at least on the pitching side).
Feldman goes 7 innings, gives up 2 ER, and leaves with a 2 run lead. He ends up with a no decision. John might find a more worthy example in his “Bad Luck Division”, but Feldman’s 7 quality starts and 1 win have to put him on the list.
CJ comes into the 9th with a 2 run lead. He only gets one out, gives up one run, and leaves 2 on base (including a man on 3rd with less than 2 outs). He gets… a HOLD. He doesn’t get a blown save either, since he left it with the lead still in tact. Fill him in for the THT “Please Hold the Applause” category. That’s one ugly hold.
Wright comes in, gets 2 outs, without giving up a hit or walk. But, a sacrifice fly puts a second run on CJ’s ledger, and a blown save on Wright. John Barten doesn’t seem to have a category for this, but that’s one “unfair” blown save. Because of some nice work by the Ranger offense, Wright does get a “W”. Now, there is a category for this: “Vulture Alert”.
Your low self-esteem is just good common sense.

Atlanta traded for Tex to make the playoffs. Thye didn’t last year and aren’t headed that way this year. So in essence an organization that has long prided itself on developing its own players and being competitive that way just gave up at least 4 players who look to be serious prospects who could help them out in the future. The fact that only one player is in the bigs on our end of the trade is fine with me right now. Another guy will be by the end of the year and then in a couple years when Atlanta has forgotten about Tex because he leaves and goes to wherever we will still be reaping the rewards of that trade.

I realize that’s not what you meant. Why in the world would you say that? Tex was supposed to put them over the hump and now they’re in a steady decline. Unless he re-signs, they just gave us 4 solid players, with at least 2 of the remaining 3 making it to the big leagues, for basically nothing. IF we hadn’t traded him, he would’ve been gone after this year anyways, so I’d say we got maximum value for him.

Its hilarious actually
When JD made a trade for Carlos Lee and Nelson Cruz and basically just gave a set-up man for a chance at the playoffs and 2 guaranteed draft picks, JD blew it big time. Atlanta gives up 4 of their top prospects and throw in a first round pick from a couple of years ago for a chance at the playoffs, and all they’ll end up with is 2 draft picks and no playoffs. Still, Atlanta didn’t screw up at all by getting their “potential HOF player”.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
